Offensive adjustment I'd like to see
« on: December 05, 2017, 11:09:05 AM »
When Rowsey gets the feeling that he needs a high pick and roll I would like to see the picker be Hauser instead of Heldt.  I understand that with Heldt you're getting a bigger screen and you're forcing their big, and presumably best rim protector, out to the perimeter to hedge on Rowsey, but bad things happen when Rowsey goes to the bucket and Heldt isn't a threat to score on the roll so it essentially guarantees Rowsey gets double teamed and rerouted, and then he'll back it out, call for the pick again but this time with 8 seconds on the shot clock, and you might as well just chuck the ball out of bounds so at least it's a dead ball turnover instead of a live ball turnover.  If the screener is Hauser you can pick and pop, pick and roll, etc.  The defense will at least have to think about guarding the picker on the high pick and roll and it will open up some space for Rowsey.

With Markus he has been great at reading the defense and getting his way into the lane for his floater and even all the way to the rim for layups, so using Heldt has actually been somewhat successful when it's Howard on the high pick and roll.  But I wouldn't hate seeing Hauser as the picker there, either.

Hauser needs to start being more involved in the offense.  He can be a mismatch, but we don't run a whole lot of sets for him and our guards don't look to feed him much.  In Maui when we would run a pick and roll with him and he would just fade to the free throw line extended it got him a bunch of open looks, and when he's open I get the same feeling I got when Novak would get in open look, just put the points on the scoreboard.

Don't remember which game it was in Maui, but I do recall Hauser screening for Rowsey, popping, and Rowsey making a behind the back bounce pass to Sam who then sunk the three from the wing.

FWIW, as the roll man this year, in 12 possessions, Sam has scored 15 points. Grades out at 76% per Synergy ("Very Good"). Matt is second in possessions with just 6.

A year ago Sam had just 20 points on 26 possessions (23%/Below Avg). Has been used more this year.

Matt last year 15 on only 10.. 97%, but rarely used.

Luke was very good. 66 on 46, 95%.
Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.

Yup, that is the exact play I was thinking of.

Seems like a good idea.  Plus, Sam is only an inch or two smaller than Heldt.
I would take the Rick SLU program right now.

Totally agree - I have a friend that's been saying this since Maui, and bringing Hauser out like that was the reason we avoided a disastrous loss to EIU. Really need to get him more involved, and that's one of the easiest ways.

Really just want the team to move the ball more especially rowsey, him and howard could easily average 6 assists

I do credit Matt for so enthusiastically rolling each time even though he knows he's never getting the ball.

I like this idea.

And if we don't go with the Hauser part, I like the idea of chucking the ball out of bounds if Rowsey needs to call for the second pick.  Do that a few times and it'll really mess with the other team's mindset....

I suspect that the pick and roll will look different with Froling as the screener.    He is an offensive threat, both as a pick-and-pop guy as well as rolling to the basket.   So, you will get a version of what you want in a couple of weeks.   Plus, you want the opposing big guarding in space, not the opposing wing.

You'll need Markus on the floor with them, but I'd also like to see them run some more weak side action using Sam and Rowsey. See if you can get some switches out of it.

Raising some good points. JB, I'm in awe of where you can get data like that - it mst be flawed however, as it makes Luke look like he's better than Matt.

Great post.  Sam’s usage is only 19.6%.  Need to get his up a few clicks and Andrew’s down. Getting him more excited nvolved is key versus being MIA versus Georgia.  He can draw the Bigs out of the paint.

I remember last season the Vadgers went after Sam big time to shut him down.  First, to mark their territory.  Second, they knew MU could only beat them if he got hot.

If you want to change the offense, then get the back to basket center, turn and shot a 15 footer.  Matt is average at best down low, but he shoots free throws with
a nice touch and supposedly he has range to the 3 point line.  Never used Luke at all to do that, nor Matt and Theo.  Diversify the center position.  I am really curious
how he uses Froling, as he is a poor man, Henry.  Just something different.  I am sure Matt gets tired of just setting picks, I would hate this offense if I was him.

Frankly, Matt is lucky to be able to set picks on this team.

Good post.  I always think the shoot looks like it is going in when Hauser shoots.  Hopefully the HF takeover from MH won't take too long.  I think he would be a solid second string 'energy guy' instead of what he is now.  I would like to see Hauser play more at the 3 position to see what he can do.  He certainly isn't a 4 / Power Forward type Big East player.

Piggybacking...

What happened to the trailing 3? We used to watch Lazar, jae, Jamil take/make them.

Why not Sam in that spot?
