Today the associated press released the all time top 100 teams based on how many times they've been ranked.
Our team came in 21st ahead of wisconsin.

The top 5 group was basically a given, but I was pretty surprised to see Cincinnati as a top 10 team.

And all 10 current Big East Schools accounted for, with 5 in the top 50.

Kinda cool fact in there:  While UCLA ('70s) is the only school to make it into every poll for a complete decade, MU is one of two schools to make all but one poll.  MU did it in the '70s, and AZ did it in the 90s.

Galway Eagle

That's actually very similar to that ESPN 50 in 50 from a few years ago. Interesting that they added so many other values and came up with pretty similar results
Retire Terry Rand's jersey!

Illinois 11?

The methodology is a little funky with all poll appearances counting for one point, unless it's at #1, in which case you get a bonus point.  If I had energy, I'd spend the time to reorder to sort by % of poll appearances.

From the Duke write-up ....

Coach Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils have been ranked more times than any other team under the same coach.

Wow, more than Wooden!!

Will a future National Player of the Year win a Krzyzewski?

Probably.  But it won't be for being the NPOY.

Wonder if these took into account records and rankings that should have been forfeited due to NCAA violations.  Look at Michigan, ranked #14 but we all know the 90's were the height of their recruiting scandals.

Sometime ago I saw a Top 10 Vacated Wins list. That was awesome.

Top decades of all time?

1. UCLA in the 70's - appeared in 100% of the polls
2. Marquette (70's), Arizona (90's) - appeared in every poll but one (99.4%)

I know the old farts around here (present company included) do a lot of reminiscing but maybe those incredible numbers will explain why.

Sure it will. National Polack of the Year.

I think there was nearly a decade period of not being ranked out of the top ten at season end. That string I believe started in the late 60's. That kind of run can jade a guy's opinion on how you grade a program.

To really put things into perspective; between 2/17/1970 and 3/5/1974 MU never fell out of the top 10 in the weekly polls.  66 weeks.

2 weeks at #1, 20 at #2, 6 at #3, 5 at #4, 8 at #5, 8 at #6, 8 at #7, 3 at #8, 3 at #9, 3 at #10.

57 of those 66 weeks in the top 7.
slipped to #11 on 3/5/1974, then jumped back the next week to #7 and spent seven more weeks in the top ten.

to expand on season ending top ten that Goose mentioned.
final ranking from the 70's (1970-1979);  8, 2, 7, 5, 3, 5, 2, 7, 3, 10

Until recently (that's an old guys version of recently), they were the team from Ohio.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

GB Warrior

Awfully impressive. Just makes you realize there aren't a lot of sustainably good basketball programs out there. All things considered, we're one of them.

Marquette ranked in every poll for the year once under Crean and once under Buzz.

From the top to the pits.

Best decade the 70's (appearred in every poll but 1),
worst decade the 80's (Appeared only 3% of the time).

And that's why I'm not a great Majerus fan, although you have to wonder about Raymonds sanity replacing him with Dukiet.

Warrior Code

It's interesting how many of these teams have their best decade immediately preceding or following their worst decade.

I guess they don't count the 1979 part of the 1979-80 season.  I was a freshman in the fall of 1979 and I remember thinking we fell out of the top 20 early so I looked it up and we were not ranked in the last 3 polls of 1979.

I would expect that they rank based on basketball seasons rather than calendar years.  I wonder how many of MU's weeks being ranked during the '80s came from those weeks from 1979.
