More than 100,000 students have applied to enter UCLA next fall, making the prestigious public university in Southern California the first in the country to report a six-figure total for freshman applications.

University of California officials disclosed Monday that 102,177 students are seeking a spot in the Class of 2021 on the Westwood campus in Los Angeles, up 5 percent from last year. The target size for the entering class is about 6,500.

Those figures don't include tens of thousands of expected transfer applicants.

You'd have to factor in the population of the state, and the in-state discount for CA residents.  The fact that most of the high-number of schools are in the UC system seems to indicate that those factors are pretty significant....

All this means is UCLA is a solid candidate to be No. 2 behind Marquette.

It's also one application for all the UC schools in CA, so a lot of kids just apply to apply (I think its an extra 20 bucks a school or so)

CA residents are some of the most insular people in the country.  They think the ends of the country are San Diego and Sacramento.

I grew up in Connecticut, a state so tiny it was almost impossible not to leave it. Still, I had never been west of Lancaster, PA (only a few hours from my hometown) until my mommy and daddy drove me to Marquette for freshman orientation. Chose MU sight unseen.

I'm fairly impressed that 75% of Californians under 18 HAVE been outside the state.

1.  You didn't need a passport to travel to and from Mexico until 2009.
