This has been brought up before, but I can't for the life of me figure out why the NCAA would try to avoid being overshadowed at the beginning of the season only to be overshadowed at the end - which is infinitely more important.  (By the NBA/NHL playoffs and opening day.)

Especially when one of their tournament TV partners - Turner - is going to be turning over most of their prime time space to the NBA playoffs in mid-April.

Exactly.  They are in a perfect spot...after football...before NBA playoffs and MLB. 

Why mess with this in an attempt to get more eyeballs on the LEAST important part of your season?

The NCAA will always find a way to turn a $5 billion business into a $2.5 billion business in the long run.  I'm all for new ideas and innovation but sometimes the best business decision is the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" axiom.

Why don't they just start playing football in August, play all the meaningless bowl games in late October early November and the championship game right before Thanksgiving. After all only a hand full of "elite" teams qualify for the big game anyway, unlike the Basketball championship where all D1 teams have a chance to participate.
