What exactly are the requirements to play for a national team?  I mean, I guess it varies by country, but some of the countries' requirements seem really lax: "What's that, you say?  Your great grandmother's cousin passed through France on the way to America?  Well, saddle up, partner.  You are technically French.  Grab a ball, a jersey, and get to the court vite!"

And didn't Butch Lee play for PR?

Butch was born in Puerto Rico. He wanted to play on the US team, but didn't get nominated to play by Al so he went to play for PR.

He almost led PR to a huge upset over the US in the Olympics going 15 for 18 and scoring 35 points.

I think he was the first Latino to play in the NBA.

Buzz - 2 players repping a country (Junior + Juan)

Let's not forget Jimmy FB is on his way to possibly securing a USMNT position.

Way more recent MU players getting "caps" for their national team.

Travis Diener played for Italy

Niv Berkowitz (we hardly knew ye!) played for Israel

David Cubillan played for Venezuela

Vander Blue played for USA at the FIBA U-18s

Are you serious with this - and by serious I'm including the attempt at humor....

Doc brings an irreverent and, at times, sardonic take on the folly of our passions. Frankly, his perspective is a refreshing tonic in the otherwise morbid welter of angst that characterizes too much of the Scoop discourse.

Can there be anything more disarming than a well-timed "Crean Sucks" to lay bare our naked souls? I think not.

There are several ways. Simplest goes up to your granparents if one of them was a national of the country you can represent the country. I know in some countries if you are married to a citizen after 2 years of residence you become eligible.

I think it's only viewed that way in the United States.

I watched Juan's game Mexico vs. Brazil.  It was typical Juan.  Several botched layups where he got "confused" on his way to the basket, a perfect 3 that made you wish he shot them more, and some amazing defense.  He guarded Brazil's best player throughout the game, gave up 3" and probably 50 lbs and the guy never scored when Juan was on him.  Late in the game, coaches switched him to a guard with a hot hand.  No more problems there either.  Mexico won in a very good game.  Never saw a box score, but Juan would have had 3 points in 30+ mins, 4 rebs, 2 blocks and maybe a steal.

The team may have received a visit from him a few years back. Maybe when Crean was at the helm during PR Shootout. Mind is fuzzy.

Sorry Nukem, Jerry the dentist is an ass.

Doc is a great guy, solid Marquette booster, and a Scoop fixture.

I thought you were a fixture over on the #donedeal board. Stay there.

You are actually correct on both counts. Butch last visited MU in 2013 to receive an award for his play as one of the all-time greats in the NCAA tournament. I think he was also back for Raymonds' funeral.

He also made an appearance with the team in San Juan.

He has a 12/13 year old son that is very good at basketball. Should we start a Scoop campaign?

I remember watching that game and cheering for Puerto Rico because of Lee. Dean Smith packed the US squad with Tar Heels. Puerto Rico was robbed on a bad charge call against Lee.
