Hmm....

Quote
“Last year, a few guys would get in the gym here and there,” says Wilson, the team’s leading returning scorer at 11.9 points per game. “Any time you come to the gym (now) you’ll see one of your teammates in here working. Even days when coach tells us he doesn’t want anybody in the gym, I see guys sneaking in here, just to get shots. I love it.”

Guess some of last year's team wasn't big on being in the gym or working hard...

Author needs to brush up on his understanding of statistical significance.  The fact that 20 out of 36 programs who took a foreign trip improved their records really doesn't say anything.

Yup, in any stats class or psychology experiment that is not a significant difference.

Marquette might as well have saved themselves some cash and just flipped a coin to see if they could increase their win total this year...

The Italy trip is a Godsend. We may get our backsides whooped and lose every game by 40 points, but it allows a mostly freshman and sophomore team some experience and cohesiveness. We need that in the worst way if we are going to be an NCAA tournament team come March 2016.

In reading the article, the one thing that stands out is the importance of our inside game -- the Luke and Henry show. The work these guys do now will keep them out of foul trouble and in games. With those two behemoths inside, we're scary.

Could this be the genesis of Bo and Jerome, Part 2? or maybe Jim and Damon, Part 2?

I'm excited again! The fall holds some promise.

Those that complain about Duke and a history of flopping (taking charges) won't like this:

Quote
In one decisive sequence, Henry Ellenson, the team’s talented 6’10” freshman, drives baseline and collides with forward Luke Fischer. Fischer falls, and a cloudburst of noise follows. Ellenson is whistled for a charge he doesn’t agree with and the players in blue jerseys line up to run. Ellenson quietly protests, saying he thought the stop left the team in white one point short of a win.

“A charge is worth two,” Wojciechowski replies. For a former Duke standout and assistant coach, of course it is. The sprints commence.

Agree on all counts except one - the games don't count, that's true - but if MU loses everyone of them by 40 we're in for a long season.

And a noose will be made by experienced Scoopers that fits Wojo's head and neck "just right."

I was exaggerating but the wins and losses on this trip are less important than the growth and maturity of the team as a team.

After reading the SI article, I started thinking if I’m an AD looking to hire a coach, what elements should he have.  Experience, Organization skill, Hiring his staff, Recruiting, X’s & 0’s Wins Losses… etc.

That the easy part, now prioritize them, that a little more difficult.

OK, now assign a weighted value to each element.   Are there one two or three elements that out weights the accumulative value of the other elements.

As of now it looks like MU did a pretty good job.

I just figured some would flip the article's comment to be that Wojo is teaching the Duke way (flopping) at MU.

Somehow, the Duke Flopping is more palatable and sportsmanlike than the classic It's Indiana Elbow to the Face play

Great article.

Wojo's enthusiasm is almost palpable - the intensity defines everything he is, and there are no eccentricities to distract him from his goal.

We may not be good this year, but damnit, it won't be for lack of wanting it.

Two diffrent times the author talks about the team doing 4 on 4 drills. What's the purpose of that and why not 5 on 5? I'm assuming to space to floor more and to have the defense get used to shifting around, but I'm not a coach and I have no idea. It just seems like 5 on 5 would be better.

Love the article though, gets me psyched for the season.

That is correct, it makes the defense really focus on help side rotations and being in good 2 and 3 pass away help side positions.  The only time I really do 5 on 5 is during scouting reports, after implementing new offensive/defensive concepts and scrimmages.  Most drill work will be 4 on 4, 3 on 3, or 2 on 2 depending what skill(s) you are working on developing.
