Has MU won a National Championship other than basketball?

Marquette has won several track individual NCAA titles with the most recent being Keith Hanson in the 10,000 meters in 1986.

In looking on the Marquette track page on the web site, they have had 13 individual national championships by 5 different athletes, with Ralph Metcalfe winning 6 titles back in the 1930's.  Ralph set a few world records and would regularly beat Jessie Owens in the sprints prior to Jessie breaking out at the 1936 Olympics with his 4 gold medals in front of Hitler.  Ralph was on the 4 x 100 relay team with Jessie that was one of Jessie's 4 golds.

This would be so cool if he wins, though it's incredible what he already has accomplished!

In fact, ken Weisner won the high jump national title for three straight years in 1943, 44 and 45 so If Wally is able to pull off the victory he won't even be our first national high jump champion.

Pulling big time for Wally to be Marquette's first national Champion in almost 30 years.  Thankfully he won't be jumping immediately after finishing basketball practice as he had to do in his last meet.  Watch him if you can; he is exciting to watch.

If you ever see the 100m final from the 1936 Olympics, Metcalfe slipped at the start, was still in last place about the halfway point, then blew past runners during the last 50 meters to come in second to Jesse Owens.

Don't for get that Ralph won the silver metal behind Jessie Owens in the 1936 Olympics.  And historians will note that the site of two black athletes winning gold and silver in the home of the "Ayran Nation" greatly embarrassed Hitler.

http://melbourneblogger.blogspot.com/2013/11/adjusting-history-jesse-owens-and-nazi.html

Adolf Hitler stormed out of the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, leaving the black athlete's hand extended in mid air. Hitler was furious because Germany had been humiliated; his Aryan supermen had been beaten by their racial inferior, a sub-human.

What Jessie and Ralph did turned out to be one of the most important events in sports in the 20th century.

Question, does MU have anything named after Ralph Metcalfe?  If not, maybe the new indoor track would be appropriate.

MU has the Ralph Metcalfe award named after him: the Ralph Metcalfe Senior Award.
