Trayvon Reed to Auburn in December

New Auburn coach Bruce Pearl has added yet another high-major talent with former Maryland signee Trayvon Reed committing to the Tigers.

The 7-foot-1, 240-pound Reed said he will attend Elev-8 Academy in Florida this semester and plans to join Auburn in December after finishing up academic requirements.

"I just need one credit," Reed said. "Then I'll be able to play for Auburn in December."

Reed was not admitted to Maryland after an incident earlier this month in which he was arrested for second-degree assault, second-degree assault of a police officer and theft under $100.

"I can't blame anyone for my mistake," Reed told ESPN on Thursday. "I made the mistake and I've beat myself up for it. I didn't even know if I'd ever get a second chance, but I'm thankful to Auburn for giving me another opportunity."

Reed, who was ranked 84th in the country by ESPN.com, was arrested after two plainclothes officers saw him stealing a candy bar. Reed tried to run away, but the officer grabbed him -- and Reed resisted the arrest.

"I was under the influence at the time," Reed admitted to ESPN on Thursday, saying he had consumed alcohol prior to the incident.

Reed said he also considered Baylor, but chose Auburn due to Pearl's track record.

"I know his history of winning," said Reed, who grew up in Mobile, Alabama. "It's also a chance for me to go back home -- and I can learn from a former NBA player in Chuck Person."

Pearl, whose three-year show-cause penalty from the NCAA concluded this past weekend, has already assembled an impressive recruiting class. He has landed a pair of Top 75 players in the Class of 2015 -- Danjel Purifoy (ESPN, No. 50) and Horace Spencer (ESPN, No. 75) -- as well as top junior college guard T.J. Dunans.

The Tigers also will have former Marshall standout Kareem Canty, who averaged 16.3 points and 5.5 assists as a freshman last season, eligible in 2015-16. Canty will sit out this season due to transfer rules.

Promising recruits they can start .... What could wrong with that?

Auburn coach Bruce Pearl has landed another Top 100 player in the Class of 2015.

Just days after securing a verbal commitment from wing Danjel Purifoy (ESPN, No. 50), Philadelphia power forward Horace Spencer committed to the Tigers.

Pearl met with the 6-foot-8.5, 210-pound Spencer at 12:01 am on Sunday -- as soon as the coach was allowed to finally talk to recruits.

"It was the perfect situation for me," Spencer said. "They offered me the opportunity to start at the four-spot."

Spencer is ranked 75th in the country in the senior class by ESPN.

Good to have squirmy options.

Maybe I am picking nits, but "promising" a recruit he will start and "offering the opportunity to start" are just a bit different.

I think every recruit has the "opportunity" to start.

The only bad thing that has happened to Bruce Pearl in the past 5 months is that he took the Auburn job on March 18th and a couple days later Buzz Williams left MU.  Pearl would have cut off both nuts, sold a kidney and added breast implants to coach at Marquette.

maybe, but I am guessing that MU would have not given Pearl a sneeze.

The truth is MU is better off with Carolyn Kieger as the Head Coach.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
