What about UConn?

Never cared for them and really despised them when they were in the Big East.  Thabeet really got under my skin at times.

I see.  So you are basically just guessing what Calhoun and Ollie game planned for in this game as well.  It's not like you have some information or talked to them or anything.

My point is that I suspect that Calhoun had a big part in game planning on how to play Florida.  Especially against the size advantage.  You have to admit the strategy to go small with the 3 guards was brilliant and you know, just IMO a man with such vast knowledge on the game would probably be the one to impart this strategy to his protege you know.  Kind of like "well if we are getting crushed by the Florida bigs, then we have to go small, Kevin".

Like I said, the announcers believed Calhoun had alot to do with the strategy and adjustments as well so it's not like I'm saying anything new.

We will just have to agree to disagree.

The strategy was done in game and not at the half.  There's no way Calhoun could have made the adjustment.  To say that he has that much control is ludicrous.  There's no way he can manage a game from the stands like that.  I believe it's time to get a decent Uconn poster in here to help solve this issue.

Game planning would usually take place before the game you know.  They had an entire week to prepare for this game.  You would use that time to talk about strategy, different scenarios and what adjustments would have to be made.  I doubt it was a spur of the moment decision by Ollie.  More likely these scenarios and adjustments would have been talked about with the staff and players during the week regardless of whether Calhoun was involved or not.  That's just common sense and what a good coaching staff would do, especially with a week to prepare.

I'm not sure why you are so adamant that only Kevin Ollie get the glory.  I do now see that you are the thread starter so that's probably why you are so heated but you do have to allow for a difference of opinion.  I'm giving credit to both Kevin Ollie and Jim Calhoun.  At the end of the day they are the same coaching tree and program so I doubt they really care who gets the credit anyway.

Byline: April 1st, 2014.
LOL.  Just kidding.

That article really doesn't answer any of our questions though.  If anything it reaffirms that Calhoun still has alot to do with the program and is in Ollie's ear.

Kevin Ollie, " "(Calhoun) has been a great resource for us. He's an ambassador. He built this program. So I'd be a fool not to use him. But at the end of the day I have to make my decision on what I think is best."

Ollie's basically admitting that he uses Calhoun.

Definitely, one of the all time greatest coaching performances in the NCAA tourney.  Donovan outcoached with the smaller lineup.  Very impressive run for UCONN.  Brad Stevens' Butler teams are my other choices as well.
Just shows what can happen when you promote a former player and alumni to the HC job. Just sayin'.

Ollie did a great job but I think Calhoun had alot of input in that game and the adjustments.  Calhoun is basically still the coach behind the curtain.

It's really said that a once storied program like UConn had to settle, like Marquette, for a guy without head coaching experience. Just screams stepping stone.

Except UCONN coaches don't leave UCONN every five years like Marquette coaches do.  He's also doing this all with Calhoun's guys.  We'll see how he does in a few more years.

Don't forget how many UCONN fans wanted him out last year and the beginning of this year for not being Calhoun.

Calhoun has the winning recruiting formula for today's college basketball.  It's all about guard play, and UCONN has the best guards in the nation.  It will be interesting to see how they get up under Kentucky, who has a serious height advantage in the guard department.  I'm thinking Kentucky, will be disrupted and the Harrison's stint as "the icing on the cake" for Kentucky comes to an end with abysmal play.  Kentucky is going to turn the ball over a lot and that will be the difference in the game, despite Kentucky overpowering UCONN down low.

CTWarrior

The biggest difference between Calhoun era and Ollie era is that UConn actually runs an offense now.  The real difference will show up in future years when we will see if Ollie can recruit as well as Calhoun did.  I think Ollie did a fine job coaching and all, but UConn won that game because those two guards (Boatright and Napier) are real defensive stoppers and they disrupted everything Florida was trying to do.  Wilbekin could not do anything.

I have a weird relationship with UConn in that I really like them except when I hate them.  I hated them during the Stanley Robinson and Jerome Dyson years and that year when they had all those NBA guys and lost to George Mason.  That is the team we killed when Novak went nuts.  That was the most talented UConn team ever but they were all counting the NBA money and didn't care like they should have.   Anyway, as an MU fan, there is no team I liked beating better than UConn, but I generally root for them whenever their success does not get in MU's way.

They've been an exciting team to watch.  It shows you how much a decent guard can transform your team on both ends of the floor.  Napier's lob passes against Florida, were amazing.  In terms of defense, he's omniscient.

I find it amusing that there are people that think Calhoun is still coaching the team in the stands.  Ollie is definitely the inspiration behind this team.  Nonetheless, you can tell the that the mentor, wants to help Ollie out so much.... like a son's first time on a two-wheel bike.

Rooting for Uconn on Monday.  They are fun to watch, and I just cannot stand Calipari's fake aura.

Had Ollie still been an assistant under Calhoun this year, I wonder how many Scoopers would have thought it a good thing if we had hired Ollie as Buzz's replacement.

I've already seen posts inquiring who's going to hire Ollie after Monday night.  Ridiculous.

Hey, I was just throwing out a discussion point. And I certainly have been called worse things than ridiculous!

BTW, and not just saying this to diffuse the situation or blow smoke up your butt, I've liked a lot of your posts. You have a good sense of humor and the right attitude.

Ass kissing will get you nowhere with Deane.....  :P

If it was a discussion point, then fine.  It's just one of those things that won't happen though.  It's only his 2nd year of coaching as a head coach.  3rd overall.

Nonetheless, if you're talking NBA, that's a different story.  I'm already seeing the media swarm on Ollie to be the next Lakers coach.  -200 points for the information age.

Appropos of nothing ...

When my kids were about 7 and 8 years old, we were visiting my old campus and I decided to take them to the Old Gym to see if we could observe a practice.

I fully intended to ask for permission, but there was nobody there to ask and the door was wide open, so in we went.

We just sat their quietly while Deane ran practice. There was nothing quiet about him, though.

Put it this way: He was no K.O., but my kiddies learned a few new words that day!
