I believe it was Greendale C.C. who was the first college to bestow a degree upon a dog, not IUPUI.

It was actually Clifford's owner, Emily Elizabeth, who attended IUPUI on a soccer scholarship.
She was expelled, however, after an incident involving Clifford and some fraternity hazing.

Those later books definitely jumped the shark in my estimation.
