Look at it this way. Both Wichita St. and Marquette have openings after the tournament. I'll even assume Wichita St. goes to the final four again this year. You're a coach considering one or the other. Which program has a higher ceiling to you?

But we're not looking at it that way.  We're looking trying to steal a coach from them.

But that's essentially what it is for him. He looks at two programs. One he can stay at, the other he can go to. Which one has a higher ceiling long term? He would be the coach at both, so take that out of consideration when looking at Wichita St. It's a choice he'll have to make, but it's undeniable that MU is a higher-ceiling basketball program when looked at from that perspective.

I'm not saying he'll even consider it, as other factors such as comfort, familiarity, job security, relationship with admin, relationship with fan base, and other things will obviously come into play. I was simply responding to the question of why he would even consider leaving Wichita St. after the run he has been on.

I don't see how you can say that.  If WSU goes on to win the National Championship they are the first team to go undefeated in college basketball since 1976 and just won a National Championship.  If they do that how do you raise the ceiling above that?  It's literally not possible.  Even if they lose to Kentucky you're coming off of a Final Four followed a 35-1 season.  I would love to see Marquette reach that ceiling.  I don't see it happening anytime soon.

Final 4 followed by round of 32? Pretty sure he'd see himself as capable of replicating that at MU over a 7-8 year contract. Losing Early and two other starters, would he see himself as able to do the same again at Wichita St. over the next 7 years? Brad Stevens went to back to back finals then ended up CBI round of 32 and unable to restock the cupboard. Early is not coming back. MU has a young talented roster to walk into in a much better conference with much greater financial support (does he have a private jet at Wichita St.? I honestly don't know but I doubt it). It could definitely look enticing is all I'm saying.

Oh my goodness, no way, not Kevin O'Neill.  That would be like a Marquette Gold move.  Move forward please and don't screw this up.

Goose, I'm with you.

Marshall is the one.

mechaghidorah

O'Neill would LOVE the job.

And he does have a good relationship with Cords.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit if guys like Howland or Marshall fall through.

Yep, that can't happen.  If a coach ever wanted him on staff, I'd be all about it.  As the head guy, it wouldn't be too special the second time around.

I am confident MU is being very proactive in their search. I also think Howland is an attractive hire for a number of schools.

DePaul would kill to get him, but no chance there.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

He's not exactly shutting that door in the article when he says:

"This could be a destination job for me. Now it may not be, but I'm just saying I'm not in a big hurry and I never have been."

I would think Greg Gard or Saul Phillips would be a good hire.  I don't see them getting Marshall.

::) Absolutely not.  No Badger ties.

The article said Marshall didn't want to mess with happy. Deja vu all over again.
