Why did Williams really leave?  Not Buzz, but Larry......

People will analyze and over analyze the last 24 hours in the coming weeks, months and perhaps years. Why did Williams, the Buzz version, leave.  What may be the more important question in the falling of dominoes is the departure of a different Williams.  Some folks (reporters) might want to get in the time machine and set the dial back to December 13, 2013 and ask why Larry Williams left.  What led to that departure and how are the two linked....which they are.

Seems pretty obvious - Pillarz got canned, and other high level people he brought in left soon after.

I suspect Larry left because he (understandably) didn't want to run an athletic department where he was beholden to someone who supposedly worked under him and with whom he had an antagonistic relationship.
I understand a lot of people don't like LW, and I can sort of see why, but if nothing else he struck me as a person of integrity and values  .... which can be a problem running a high-level college basketball program, I imagine.

warriorchick

Not that obvious....Larry wasn't. one of Pilarz's guys from the East Coast, like most of the others that bailed after his departure.  He was selected by a committee that was primarily non-Pilarz hires.

Have some patience, FFS.

Are you going to tell us, make us guess, or just revel in the "i know something you don't know" approach?

Larry Williams left because many within the program felt he had neither the tact nor polish to properly represent Marquette. It was less a matter of ability and more a matter of presentation. If you couple that with Buzz's displeasure of the new leadership (ie. Pilarz and Williams and Buzz not feeling the love), it was easy to quietly point Larry in the direction of the door. Buzz wanted it and Larry's own actions in public, at donor functions, etc., suggested that Buzz was correct.

Now, I can only assume, that many of the same that pointed Larry in the direction of the door, found that things hadn't changed too much after his departure and Buzz found other things to make him feel "unloved". Sometimes, you just can't satisfy someone and so you let them leave.

I am sure Buzz's move to Va Tech was just as much a move for him to say, "let's see how they appreciate me now that I am gone" as it was anything else. To that extent, Hunt's article was on point. He is a quirky dude and appears to be suffering from self-esteem issues (case in point; the McIlvaine situation and some comments about fans booing). He had a strange path to where he's at and you just can't shake the baggage that defined who you are. I am sure part of what drives him to excel is a fundamental fear of failure; criticism compounds that fear.

But, as it relates to Larry, let's be clear that his departure had as much to do with his own personality, tact and professionalism as it did with his "conflict" with Buzz. They may be related, but they are not monogamous.

In the end, we should strive to be bigger people. Marquette is a very well respected program and is bigger than who Buzz is, or who Buzz portrayed himself to be. Marquette is committed to basketball and, as such, will survive and prosper.

As for Buzz, we should probably wish him well. That said, just like Buzz, I am human. And just like with Crean, I hope he flames out. I will relish his sorrows. Call it petty. Call it vengeful. Call it the wrath of a woman (or man) scorned. I agree. It is petty and vengeful. But, oh well. We all have our warts. I hope his cause him to fail....and I will live with mine hoping he does. His words ring hollow.

Excellent post MUCam. I won't wish him abject failure, but same as with Crean I hope he never surpasses what he did at MU. I think in a perfect world he could have been a perfect fit but that was not to be. Now I hope we make lemonade out of some lemons and improve our lot like we did in 2008.
