Would have been hilarious.

Al should have been fired for starting Bill Neary (according to some scoopers).

Ha! When MU dropped 3 straight in mid-February, this board would have mailed it in.

Bill Neary wasn't anywhere near as good as Derrick is. John Dawson isn't anywhere as good as Bernard Toone was (top 5 player out of high school). This board would have been going nuts, especially as the season unfolded (most losses in the last 10 years). I can only imagine the "Thank God he's retiring, good riddance" threads.

And would have been drug through the coals for being a lame-duck coach.    And for recruiting players with off-the-court issues.    And not doing a better job of building them as men.    And for letting them take that team picture in that limo.   They look like pimps.

Al summed up everything that is MUScoop long ago:

As an 8th grader in 1977 I remember like yesterday being so pissed at Al after DePaul loss. Whole way home in the car all I did was bitch about him cashing in the season after putting Lavin in during OT. That is coming from a guy that holds Al as favorite sports idol in my life. For two weeks in Feb 1977 Al frustrated me big time. Thank God the luck suit came out shortly afterwards.

Bill Neary still will not attend any MU functions, because he is still bitter about the fans booing him.

if 1977 would have been fun, how much fun would 03-04 and 04-05 been?    Good lord.     Not to mention the Dukiet years.

So true. Transport those with the pitchforks out today back in time and they'd be all over Al.

Oh, don't worry, the 03-04 and 04-05 years are brought up here often by a few as if it were yesterday.  They got you covered.

;)

Pretty certain we don't have to worry about winning the NCAA title this year and looking silly for all of the criticism...

Lavin was a great guy. He lived in McCormick with the regular dudes.

Still is?  I hope.

He had Wisconsin License Plate  "MU 1" back in the mid 80's.  Turned it in because it was always being stolen.

The high horses would have been chicken feed.

ATVSandKARATE

Some idiot would have made an account that makes fun of Al...
I have been thinking about you a lot since last weekend. A whole lot.

This is so true. And though I like to think I would have been reasonable, maybe I wouldn't have been. Especially given that I was a rather impetuous 16 years old at the time.

Al was 22-30 his first two years at Marquette. Would Scoopers have given him a third season?

Coach K was 38-47 his first three years at Duke (this after going 9-17 his last year at Army). Can you imagine DukeScoop going nuts about bringing in some Bobby Knight Wannabe loser?

John Wooden didn't win a first-round NCAA tournament game until his 14th season at UCLA. How do you think that would have gone over on UCLAScoop?

And so on and so on.

If the pressure to win immediately was the same back then as it is now, many legends might never have become legendary.

Big Lavin fan, just not at that moment in time. He parlayed his Warrior success into big business success. More power to him.

OMG, I had no idea that he was the President of West Telemarketing.  We use them all the time, my team.  LOL.  Small world.

I know that, Goose. I was just saying I knew him in the Beer Can and he was a regular Joe. Mark had some scholarship offers but chose MU for more important reasons. Smart guy who studied hard. Lost track of him after MU but glad to hear he did well. Certainly no surprise.

Speaking of Lavin, anybody know if he is going to be in attendance at the Creighton game?

I believe Lavin made his first score in finance world, PE or hedge fund.

Looks like he is no longer at West....now involved with commercial investments.
