release courtesy USA Basketball

Successful collegiate head coaches Ed Cooley of Providence College, Tim Ryan from the College of Central Florida (NJCAA) and Buzz Williams of Marquette University today were announced as court coaches for the 2013 USA Basketball Men's U19 World Championship Team training camp. The USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team committee made the coaching selections.

The three court coaches will assist the 2013 USA Basketball Men's U19 World Championship Team coaching staff during the June 14-19 training camp.

The USA at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship, which will be played June 27-July 7 in Prague, Czech Republic, will be led by the University of Florida's Billy Donovan and assistant coaches Shaka Smart of Virginia Commonwealth University and Gonzaga University's Mark Few.

Training camp for the 2013 USA Men's U19 World Championship Team will be held June 14-19 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Approximately 25 elite U19 players are expected to attend the training camp which will be utilized to select the USA's 12-member team. Only U.S. citizens who are 19 years old or younger (born on or after Jan. 1, 1994) are eligible for the 2013 USA U19 World Championship Team.

The training camp will begin on June 14 with the first session scheduled at 5:00-7:30 p.m. (all times listed are MDT). Training continues with practices from 9:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and 4:30-7:00 p.m. on June 15 and 8:30-11:00 a.m. on June 16. The court coaches will depart for home on June 16, when finalists for the USA U19 Team are expected to be announced by the USA Men's Junior National Team Committee.

In his second season as head mentor at Providence, Cooley led the Friars to a 19-15 record and the NIT quarterfinals. Head coach at Fairfield University for five seasons (2006-2011), Cooley was selected the 2011 Metro Atlantic Athletic Coach of the Year after leading Fairfield to a 25-8 overall record and the NIT second round.

"It is a privilege and an honor to be invited to participate in the USA Basketball training camp for the 2013 U19 FIBA World Championship," Cooley said. "USA Basketball has so much tradition and history. It exemplifies the very best in basketball, and I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the coaching staff."

Completing in 2012-13 his fifth season as head coach at Marquette, Williams has compiled a stellar 122–54 (.693 winning percentage) overall record. Over the past three seasons he has led Marquette to a pair of NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen appearances and one Elite Eight. Leading Marquette to a 26-9 overall record and capturing a share of the 2012-13 Big East Conference regular season championship, Williams' Golden Eagles defeated Davidson College, Butler University and ACC regular season and tournament champion University of Miami before falling to Syracuse University in the NCAA Tournament East Regional final.

"It's an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to represent the program while coaching with USA Basketball this summer," Williams said. "I am really looking forward to serving as a court coach, while at the same time working with some of not only the top players in the country, but some of the best coaches as well."

Ryan will enter the USA Basketball U19 training camp riding high after claiming the 2013 NJCAA National Championship and being named the NJCAA Division I Coach of the Year. Leading the Central Florida Patriots to a 34-3 record in 2012-13, in 10 years (2003-present) at the College of Central Florida he owns an impressive 232-94 (.712 winning percentage) overall record and has won six conference titles, a state title and a national title.

"Since winning our national championship this year I have been blessed and received many awards," Ryan said. "Being asked to work as a court coach for USA Basketball has been the most gratifying of them all. The opportunity to work with the top players and coaches from our country is as rewarding as it gets. This is truly one of the highlights of my career."

In addition to chair and NCAA representative Jim Boeheim (head coach, Syracuse), the 2013-16 USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee includes NCAA appointees Bob McKillop (head coach, Davidson), Matt Painter (head coach, Purdue University) and Lorenzo Romar (head coach, University of Washington), as well as athlete representative Curtis Sumpter, a 2011 USA Pan American Games and 2004 USA U20 National Team member.

Have some patience, FFS.

Nice honor for Buzz-quite the list of elite coaches involved.  Can't hurt with recruiting, either.

Cooley said it was a privilege and an honor while Buzz called it an honor and a privilege.

Must mean Buzz is about to change jobs.

Any of the U-19 kids from future 2013-14 opponents?

Once they meet Buzz they'll become potential transfers to MU.

Jay Bee

So MU is essentially on the same level as Providence & the College of Central Florida JUCO? Great.

USA Basketball is awesome. Can't wait to see the U16 kids do work in addition to the team Buzz will be coaching!!
The portal is NOT closed.

Sunbelt15

Wonder if Buzz will give them the MU style of coaching or the pampered, young star style.
