Jerel McNeal - DNP CD

Astute readers noticed Jerel McNeal's name missing from the final box from MU's victory over the University of Victoria on Sunday night.

As it turns out, the junior guard was withheld by coach Tom Crean after the two had a disagreement regarding McNeal's play during the third quarter of MU's game against Douglas College earlier in the day.

Here's what Crean had to say about the matter:

Jerel's lack of effort in rebounding and his response to the response from the bench regarding that lack of effort kept him out of the game Sunday night, said Crean. One of the hardest parts of coaching is developing leadership and helping guys become complete players. We want our players to get the most of their ability and some times the best way to help them gain a better understanding of that is with some time on the bench.

On another front, the entire MU traveling party is now back on campus; the second and final group returned to the Al McGuire Center around 7:15 this morning.

Crean sat Chapman for the first exhibition game at the BC two years ago for showing "a lack of senior leadership".  That moved seemed to work as Joe had a very good Sr. year.  Let's hope the message was received by JM and it doesn't have to be sent again.

Hopefully benching McNeal will have the same effect as it did benching Joe. Jerel is someone we need to perform well to succeed and hopefully he will learn from this.

Third Quarter?  Man, basketball is a different game up there in Canada, eh.

Stupid metric system, screwing up everything.

I believe they were playing international rules.. that means 4 periods of 10 minutes each. thought I saw somewhere where the team was practicing using the trapezoid, etc.
Once a warrior always a warrior.. even if the feathers must now come with a beak.

High school and pros play quarters. NCAA college basketball is the outsider.

That is the benefit of having so many good guards. You can afford to not play a player, if you want to send a message.

Harrison

hopefully Crean takes the same approach to Jerel's retarded turnovers this year.

yes, they were using the trapezoid lane at the open practice last Tuesday.

And as for Harrison, try using more appropriate language.  Some of us on the board have mentally handicapped family members and take offense to that word being thrown around as much as it is.

Harrison

more PC?...

hopefully Crean takes the same approach to Jerel's mentally handicapped turnovers this year.

ecompt

Come on, Harrison, that's not PC. It's just good manners and common sense. There were several ways you could go, "brainless," "stupid", etc., without saying "retarded." I know that Murff, for one, has a handicapped child.

muwarrior87

and I have a brother and know quite a few absolutely amazing people that are mentally handicapped.  Some of the kindest most selfless people I know.

It's the people that you describe that make Harry the "big man" that he is.
