McNeal is overrated defensively, which is because of his steal total-----steals are only one type of defending another is containment----and McNeal is no super containment guy. Even his steals dropped a great deal during the BE season last year----in the pre BE season he was superb at that!

Best containment defender on the team is Cubilan----with DJ having an edge over mcNeal!

His steals dropped due to injury.

Not so----in the pre BE schedule McNeal averaged 4 steals game-----in the BE schedule and before he got injured (14 games played) his steal average went down to 1.5 steals/game!

thanks Murf for showing even an ounce of positive support towards our team and players. It's good that we have dedicated fans such as yourself that are quick to point out the teams shortcomings, while ignoring the skills they have and the good press they receive.

And we all know that BE stats are the only one's that matter, eventhough any loss is one we cannot afford. Thank goodness for those 1.5 steals per game, especially since they lead to a game winning lay-up vs. (conference opponent) usf. But yeah, he's overrated.

What player wouldn't want the support of fans like you? YAY!

Props to Jerel.

I dunno, Murf, I seem to recall Cubes getting a ton of fouls whenever he had to contain anyone approaching his speed..., (yes, McNeal gets his share too).  Maybe DJ is the best at containment?

Obviously McNeal is overrated in his defensive skills, thats why he received the BE defender of the year award.  Yes, no one on that committee knows what they are talking about but you Murff, you are the great one of knowledge.  McNeal is the best defender in the BE and possibly the whole country on the perimeter, don't look at his steals, look at how many deflections he gets a game, look at the intensity he brings to the team that brings the whole team up, look at how many fast break points are started by his defense.

pure genius stuff by Bill Simmons, remember to read day 2

Mayor----as I say above McNeal got a lot of mileage out of his per game steal total in the first half of the season (McSteal)----however it was aginst the weaker teams (4 steals/game)----against BE opponents (1.5 steals/game).

Cordell Henry was a better "containment" defender than McNeal----Cordell actually shut down people-------who has McNeal "shut down"?????

Please notice that Cordell Henry didn't get any national awards for his defense-----so why should McNeal?????

mosarsour

And here I thought McNeal was a great defensive player.  Thanks for showing me the light Murff... ::) ;D

Murf, admit it, "McSteal" is an awesome nickname. Don't hate.

I don't put much stock in awards that are voted on by coaches or players or even local writers, who are far more concerned about their own team than opponents.  McNeal has the nickname McSteal, with the steal tote board and has a reputation, and that, probably more than anything, gets him votes for stuff like this.  Even if he has a crappy defensive year this year he will still get honors like this because once you have a reputation for being a good defender, it never goes away.  That's why Derek Jeter wins Gold Gloves despite being at the very bottom of all defensive metrics year in and year out (I can never resist a chance to knock a Yankee).
All of that being said, McNeal sure looks and feels like a very good defender to me.  When you look at our team last year, we had poor outside shooting, not much of an inside scoring presence, we weren't great defensive rebounders, we didn't have great interior defense, but we still won a lot more than we lost and beat some very good teams along the way.  The defense of our guards is one of the big reasons why, and McNeal is the best of the bunch, IMO.
Calvin:  I'm a genius.  But I'm a misunderstood genius.
Hobbes:  What's misunderstood about you?
Calvin:  Nobody thinks I'm a genius.
