Andy Katz reporting that the Big East has agreed to ban any team from the BET if they are not eligible for the big dance.

Make sense.  Same reason USC and Ohio St. were not eligible to compete in their conference championship games.  Why waste an auto-qualifier spot on a team that cannot make it.

My parents wouldn't let me watch BET when I was younger, but I'm surprised UCONN would care.

If the Big East was a one bid conference, I would agree with the ban.  But without acces to the NCAA tournament, the BET becomes their NCAA tournament.  Their season next year now becomes a total waste of time and recruiting is that much harder.  This is not the way to treat a valuable conference member you want to keep happy, especially when you consider this is a ban for poor academic performance rather than cheating.  I'm willing to bet there are lots of schools who are in UConn's boat but avoided problems by fudging the numbers.

Hope they don;t overturn the NCAA ban, but I think BET is ok.

Everyone else played by the rules, they can't complain.  When we have to look the other way at a school not meeting its NCAA obligations to keep that school competitive and happy with the conference, we are in BIG trouble.  And don't kid yourself, if a better football conference comes calling, UConn is gone no matter how much we hold their hand now.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Wow, you're not treating our UConn visitor with much respect. Close the thread! Jim Calhoun- molder of young men. (it's a dirty program too.)

LOL

In all seriousness, this is absolutely the right decision. Most years, the BET winner will also be at-large worthy, but if a team makes a stunning 4-5 day run from bubble to tourney winner, it should be rewarded, an a UConn (this year) would waste that reward. The league won't be a 9-11 bid league every year, and if you end up with a 5-6 bid year, the extra money that one more team making the tournament and possibly winning a few games would bring isn't chump change. If you aren't eligible for the NCAAs, there is absolutely zero sense in letting you play at MSG. And if they want to play in March...DON'T BREAK THE RULES! It's just that simple.

Connecticut men's basketball scored 826 on the APR for 2009-10. School officials have said it will come in at just above 975 for 2010-11. The scores are expected to be higher in 2011-12.

Any idea where we fall on this NCAA scale?

We're at no risk, our scores are just fine. Interesting that UConn's scores are so good considering so many are ready to jump to the league. I'm sure guys like Drummond, Lamb, and Boatright were stellar students.
