I'm curious to see what Chicos thinks of this.  Personally I don't mind a long search that yields the best candidate.  As long as we don't have to replace Steve Cottingham can do the job adequately I would assume.

I think Steve is a very good lawyer and does the school well in that role.  I, too, am ok with a long search to yield the best candidate.  However, I do not think Steve should be the long term solution and with this type of decision it seems to me that this is the direction it's going in.  When it comes time to making an important hire, you want an AD in there that understands a coach which isn't something that most people understand.

I'm a bit alarmed by this decision, we're only in May and they're giving up the search....that seems strange to me on several levels.  Now is the perfect time to interview and hire an AD, during the Summer before the student athletes gear up again for another season.  Why they would announce this in May I don't know.  If it was August it would make sense, not in May.

Chicos - is it possible that people are turning the job down? Who would make the decisions outlined in the Journal piece...the reorganization of the department? Is that Cottingham?

Whatever the case may be, this is way too long a process (Cords announced his retirement nine months ago).  When Fr. Wild retires, his replacement will probably be name quickly if not in advance.  This smells like a search by committee?

Or .. maybe they are waiting someone out?  They know who they want, but he'll only be available later in the year.

Anyhow, I do agree.  Very odd.  I'm sure even before the announcement was made about Cords, that he'd told them well before the public announcement was made.  Of course, you can't exactly do a public search before it's public .. I'm guessing that Cords left the program in such good position (coaches contracts all signed, BE, ESPN, radio) .. that it sort of runs on auto-pilot right now.

I have no idea PRN.  The Summer is also when the NACDA and NACMA meetings are held, which was essentially our "convention" for Athletic Directors and Marketers.  It's where all the ADs will be, just like all the coaches go to the Final Four.

One would think a search firm is involved in this process, but I don't know if that is the case.  The timing just strikes me as odd, the entire Summer is front of these guys to get this done.

LOL.  Whenever I see Marquette University text light up on the phone at home I ignore it...just asking for more money.

I do know some qualified candidates, some of whom have major MU ties along with a ton of college / professional sports administrative experience.  I do not know if they have contacted MU or vice versa....I have not asked them as I didn't want to prye.

I'm sure every candidate has turned MU down.  Who would want to be AD at a school that can't sign a player 6' 7" or taller?

Ha.  I'm not the only one!  I always feel a twinge of guilt not answering an MU call, but the constant calls are a little annoying.  Then again, I suppose if I did answer it one of these times there may be a longer period between calls.

I agree Chicos--this quote from the JS makes me shake my head:   "Marquette University will delay its search for a permanent athletic director until later this year."
So what have they been doing for the nine months since Cords publically announced?  This is like leaving a house on the market for a year and half.  Makes it look like the MU AD spot is not too attractive by delaying so long.
