Speaking of the net, was anybody else worried a game winning shot was going to go through the rim and come back out somehow with that piece of net out?

In the early days of basketball, yes.  In this era, impossible.  Once it goes past the rim, it is a basket - no matter if it pops back out or not.

Why didn't they just replace the net? It takes about two minutes to put up a new net.

I was surprised by that, as well.  Seemed odd.  I would guess there is an extra net somewhere.  Maybe it would have taken to long to get it and replace the bad one.
