How they voted: AP poll (Week 2)

Marquette went up one spot in the first regular-season Associated Press top 25 poll.

That's cool to see. Hopefully Enlund updates this every week.

Wonder why Franchuk and Macnamara dropped us from 16 to 22 this week...  ?-(

Hey, Tom.  How about a vote for MU at the 1 spot?  It would look nice to have a "(1)" next to Marquette in the rankings...integrity is a thing of the past.

This is good to see. Way to go Tom, especially since you're putting YOUR vote out there for all to see.

Hilarious.  Go ahead and lump Goodman in there.  In his latest CBS rankings, he didn't have us in the Top 25+1.  Really?  If there are atleast 26 teams better than us, this is going to be one stacked year of college hoops.

Also didn't have DJO in his top 50 players or his Big East First OR Second team.  Nor did he have Wilson in his top 25 transfers, despite having players who were three star recruits who were buried on the bench before transferring in the list.  Either Buzz wants his players underrated and Goodman is happy to oblige, they're no longer best buds, or he got the CBS gig and decided to stop trying.

An inevitable result of buzz's decision not to go for 100 points against Norfolk State.   ::)
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Really, what was Vander thinking when he drove to the hoop for another two, knowing Buzz would never let us put up a shot on the final trip!   Once in high school we were winning 98-32 and the other team in bounded it and laid it in so they got to score the 100th point instead of us.  That is my fondest memory of the uneasy, "we want to score 100 without looking like we are showing them up" scenarios.
The www.valueaddsports.com analysis of basketball, football and baseball players are intended to neither be too hot or too cold - hundreds immerse themselves in studies of stats not of interest to broader fan bases (too hot), while others still insist on pure observation (too cold).

I love that Scott Wolf, USC's writer, is our No. 10 vote.  Is Kevin O'Neill saying nice things about us?  Pretty funny that he has set up a #9 vs. #10 for us on his ballot vs. Wisconsin, but that he dumped rival UCLA out of his top 25!

And that was before UCLA lost to Middle Tennessee State last night.

I actually got Goodman to talk about this during the Tip Off Marathon chat on CBSSports.com yesterday. Goodman was struggling to figure out how to get an avatar on his comments, so I joked that he's as good at that as he is at voting for Marquette in the AP Poll.

His response was something to the effect of "It's not like Marquette has to be ranked right now."

Which is a pretty awful response.

This is good stuff. Glad Tom is sharing it.

We're getting plenty of love from MU alum Tom Keegan.

Believe me, the guys not voting for us have nothing against us. They just need to be convinced. Hopefully, that will happen Dec. 3 (if not sooner)!

Being ranked is always good for recruiting and for just plain feeling good about the team. But my main reason for wanting to be ranked is that our games are always featured on ESPN's crawl. I'll be watching something with my wife or kid and every time the crawl shows our score, I say: "Hey look, we won again!"

Just to be clear, this particular blog entry is by Dave Heller.  It's officially the JS "Golden Eagles Blog" and Enlund writes most the entries so we put that on the MUScoop topic, but the blog entries can be written by anyone on the JS staff.  The bot we use to pull the entries in will only publish the author name if the JS makes that available in their feed (but they don't).

Not picking on you, a few other mentioned Tom, so I thought I ought to mention that it wasn't actually Tom in this case.

I thought the same thing. So you have to have Villanova and Washington ranked, but not Marquette? Apparently the rest of the voters disagree, since those two combined for 66 polling points and Marquette received 406.

For that matter, why does North Carolina, Syracuse, Duke, or Wisconsin have to be ranked? It's November, the rankings don't matter, so apparently neither does integrity in voting. After all, if you don't "have" to be ranked, why have rankings in the first place?

The only way that response holds any water is if they wouldn't put out the first ranking until December 1. While I think that would be a great idea that would help prevent teams from being overinflated early (*cough* UCLA *cough*) there's no way that will happen because the networks want to advertise "#2 Kentucky takes on #12 Kansas at Madison Square Garden". If there are rankings, then rank the teams that should be ranked. If you want to say that Marquette shouldn't be there on merit, fine, but don't say we don't "have" to be ranked simply because it serves no end.

If that's the case, just put the entire SWAC in the top 10 and throw darts at a board to pick the rest. There'd be just as much integrity in that as there is not putting Marquette in because they don't have to be ranked.
