Thought this might be interesting to all:

Dear Students:

I want to share information with you about some developments related to Marquette's intercollegiate athletics.

Future of the Big East

I'm sure you've heard or read about the athletic conference realignments. Big East conference presidents and athletic directors have been meeting regularly, either in person or by phone, to discuss the future of the conference and how we can maintain the high-level of athletic competitiveness and national reach for which the Big East is known.

Right now we are focusing on two things:
•   Discussions with a select number of institutions that have indicated a strong interest in joining the Big East Conference; and
•   Changes to the conference's governing bylaws that would further solidify the membership of the Big East.

Our affiliation with the Big East has been very positive for Marquette, and we will continue to work with conference officials and member institutions to sustain and enhance it. We are carefully monitoring the changing dynamics of conference realignment nationwide, recognizing the significance of Marquette's membership in a conference that is strong in basketball, soccer and our other varsity sports and that also offers wide geographic exposure.

Peer Review of Athletics

The second item I want to bring to your attention is the presence on campus this week of three nationally recognized educators who are conducting a peer review of our athletic program. The review looks at the department's academic performance, culture, student-athlete welfare, governance and compliance.

The review team includes: Dr. Mary DiStanislao, senior associate director of athletics at the University of Pennsylvania; Dr. Ted Leland, vice president for university advancement at the University of the Pacific and a former athletic director at Stanford and Dartmouth; and Dr. Sue Wasiolek, dean of students at Duke University.

They will be meeting with athletic department and university administrators, members of the Faculty Athletic Board and other faculty representatives and student-athletes. You may also feel free to offer your insights by emailing the review team at: athleticreview@marquette.edu.

This peer review was scheduled prior to the Big East discussions. While conference affiliation will certainly be a topic of interest, that was and is not the intent of the review. The review will provide critical information as the university launches a national search for athletic director.

Search for an Athletic Director

And that is the third item I wanted to share with you. The university has hired Parker Executive Search, an Atlanta-based firm specializing in collegiate athletics, to assist us in the search for a new athletic director. Parker has led the search for ADs at Bradley, Dartmouth, Illinois, Iowa, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Rutgers and Tennessee, among others.

Parker will be working with a strong Marquette-based search committee, chaired by Allie McGuire. McGuire graduated in 1973 after a successful career as a starting guard at Marquette, playing for his father, Al McGuire. He is a retired executive with Fidelity Investments in Boston, Mass. Other members of the search committee are Doc Rivers, Arts '85, head coach of the Boston Celtics, a Marquette trustee and a 14-year NBA veteran; Dr. Margaret Callahan, dean of the College of Nursing; and Matt Mitten, professor of law and director of Marquette's National Sports Law Institute.

The search committee will use the information developed during the peer review and meetings with representative groups on campus, including MUSG officers and the Student Athletic Board, to develop a list of the qualities and characteristics looked for in our next athletic director. If you have comments you'd like to share, you can email the committee at ADsearch@marquette.edu.  It is my hope and expectation that we will announce a new athletic director in the near future.
It has been a strong fall sports season for Marquette, and we want the enthusiasm that accompanies collegiate sports to remain a part of your Marquette experience.  Enjoy Marquette Madness tomorrow night.

Sincerely,
Father Scott R. Pilarz, S.J.
President
Marquette University

Great news on the AD search.  Going to be professionally done, not be some sort of half-hearted effort.  I like the committee too - McGuire not only cares deeply for MU, but is a pretty damn smart guy.

Parker also did the search for Minnesota Gophers football coach Jerry Kill.  Professionally.

Did Parker disclose/know that he has a history of seizures and could have a seizure during a game like what happened this year?

I see you do this a lot...

What does "aina" mean?
aina' is a Milwaukee colloquialism which loosely translated means, ain't it so or more correctly isn't it so?

F*ckin' and BeeJay would know better than me. They constantly spent time chasin' tail in Cudahy while at MU.

I need to read slower.... For a second, I thought Matt Millen was on our AD search committee.  :o  Matt Mitten is much better to hear.

Pretty sure it has been publicized when it happenned to him at NIU.  I had heard about it.  I would suspect the U of M had heard about it as well.

a flashy wide receiver that can't catch would be our AD.

What is the deal with the peer review? Is it simply to aid in finding a new athletic director or is there more to it than that?

Blackhat

I'm wishing for the best.

One thing's for sure you can tell Pilarz has operated in the world of academia a long time.

Is that true? I would think a coaching hire and an administrator hire would be remarkably different things.

A lot, there's a 20 year history.  However, probably not enough.  I don't believe Minnesota did their proper due diligence.  This is four out of seven years now that seizures have caused him to miss at least a week of practice during the season.

Kill also wouldn't talk about his issues last year at NIU and still has not publicly said why he was out for a week a year ago, but it's obvious it was because of seizures again.

It hurts recruiting no matter what, but I don't think he can recruit guys to Minnesota in the first place anyway.  Not a good hire.

Thanks a lot, Parker Executive Search.

That said, hopefully the Marquette AD job is a lot more desirable than the Gophers football job.  With the new facilities and being in the Big Ten, it's hard to believe people don't want anything to do with the head coaching job at Minnesota, but that's certainly how it appeared during the search.

If I had a dollar for each time I have seen that or words to that effect in university press releases this summer til now, I'd be rich.

BTW, I think Allie will be a good omen. He knew how much his father cared for this university, and I expect his fondness for MU still runs deep. When I saw his name, I knew that this committee will do its best for MU.

I think it is the precursor to bringing back football and the Warrior knickname.
