JFC.  That's insane.  I saw Duke in the West, I figured, haw haw.   But they play in Charlotte.  Bastards.

MUMac

It's the POD system.  Top two teams in each Region play their first and 2nd round games closest to their home.  Nothing nefareous about it.

They don't have to have a pod in NC every year.

Agree with MUMac.  Duke ends up close to home because every year they play well enough during the regular season to be a #1 or a #2 seed.  Kansas is playing in Tulsa - similar to them.  I also hate that NC always has games, but I would imagine it's because they fill the arenas and bid well enough to do so.  There are also multiple locations in NC available.

Exactly.  That's the ridiculous part.

Aside from that, I've come to just expect it at this point.  When it happens this often it's time to stop being surprised every year.

That's what happens when you turn in a 30-4 record.  We do that, we are in Chicago.  14 losses - go to Cleveland (which isn't that far away via car)

The problem isn't that they get to stay home every year.  The problem is that the NCAA carves out a location specifically for them to stay home almost every year.

GGGG

North Carolina has three good-sized arenas.  (Raleigh, Charlotte and Greensboro)  They get regional assignments there because they sell out these locations.  Wisconsin has one (Milwaukee).  My understanding is that Madison no longer bids for these things because there is too much of a potential conflict with hockey scheduling.

And in looking back, they generally have a Carolina location three out of every five years.

MUWarrior4Life

Also Duke always seem 2 play in the weakest regions. The East region has some real firepower, OSU, Syracuse, etc, the list goes on. While the Dukeys will just roll in there region....

Whoops, facts.
