Theoretical Question About MU Playing In Milwaukee

MU could not play in Milwaukee because MU is the host school.

If UWM was the host school and the tourney was still in the BC, could MU theoretically play in Milwaukee?  Or is MU prohibited from playing in their home stadium regardless of who is the host school?

Yes. I think if UWM hosted the tournament at either their place or the Bradley Center it would be acceptable.

So we sign a 5 year deal to play them, but they must host the next time Milwaukee sponsors the tournament.

I think some schools have gotten around it by limiting the number of games they play in an alternative arena in a particular year.  So, I think Nova was able to play at the Wells Fargo Center when another school hosted there.

By that logic, we wouldnt have been able to play at MSG in the first two rounds. NCAA has some strange stipulations.

It's both - from http://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2017-03-12/march-madness-bracket-how-68-teams-are-selected-division-i:

A team will not be permitted to play in any facility in which it has played more than three games during its season, not including exhibitions and conference postseason tournaments.

A host institution's team shall not be permitted to play at the site where the institution is hosting. However, the team may play on the same days when the institution is hosting.

Teams may play at a site where the conference of which it is a member is serving as the host.

Wish the Kohl Center could go back to hosting like they did in 2002, but tough with all the WIAA and Wisconsin hockey stuff. Would be convenient for MU to play in Madison.

The only realistic way we might be able to host in Milwaukee is if we landed a Regional Final in the new arena and made the Sweet 16 in the Midwest.

I don't think this would work either--the prohibition I believe applies to all rounds except for the Final Four/championship (and Dayton for the First Four).  If UWM hosted at Miller Park, though, we could play there.  That's probably our best likelihood (I remember the possibility of MP hosting basketball being discussed a few years back).

I remember that idea ... I thought Milwaukee did not have enough hotel rooms to qualify even tough Miller Park is a large enough indoor stadium..

I think the worry would be a day like today or colder and Miller Park not getting warm enough for basketball.

Maybe DePaul will host the NCAA tournament at their new arena. MU playing in Chicago would be a great draw.

Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Detroit, St. Louis, Louisville and Cincinnati aren't nearly as close. But they're still within 5-6 hours of Milwaukee.

I don't think their new arena is big enough.  It only holds 10,000 people.

They used to host it at the Alstate Arena, regional games no less as well. First college basketball game I went to was Illinois vs UW-M in 2005 at the Alstate.
