hopefully everyone here has had the chance to meet "freeway," or has at least seen him at MU games.  (if not, check out the wiki)  i would run into him at least once a week in the union, and we'd have a pretty good discussion about all things milwaukee sports.  so anyway, rumor has it that he was hit by a bus a while back, and in his settlement with the city, he requested lifetime season tickets to the bucks, brewers and warriors instead of money.  i was wondering if anyone actually KNOWS if this is true?  if you've heard another rumor, or know the true story, please share.  However he gets all his tickets, i'm glad he goes, cause he's quite the fan...

I think this is the most popular theory of how Freeway gets into all the games, but I can't believe that it's true.  What I've been told is that because the city has no direct ties to the BC or MU they were in no position to give away tickets to these events.
Maybe he was hit by a bus and won a settlement and uses the money to come to the games, but I don't know anything about that.

How long has Freeway been around?  I know that he was popular on campus circa 1994 when one of my high school teachers was at MU. I've been told his real name, but it isn't coming to me right now.  (I think it was McSomething)

Regardless, he is a staple at Milwaukee sporting events.

ZiggysFryBoy

ask him about hockey.  He hates hockey and will get mad at you and leave.

He also has a pair of jeans in his Aldi bag.

Dang! You make ME feel OLD!

I was at MU from 93-97 and even THEN Freeway was talked about as a fixture before my time.

Cool thing your teacher is an MU grad - I'm both an MU Alum ('97) and teacher!

Does he have MU stuff up in his room?

I heard that he got his MU tickets because he got hit by one of the vans in MU's LIMO service.

I'm new to the legend of freeway so I really don't know. I'm actually not even sure how old MU's LIMO service is, so I could have totally been mis-informed. Plus I never knew that he had tickets to all Milwaukee sporting events.

His name is Mike McCarter. I think all these theories are urban legend. I think he gets them through benefactors. And he's been around since the late 80's. I recall O'Neill being hired and saying that Freeway's new name is going to be "Highway" because that's where he's going. Dukiet used to let him sit on the bench.

Freeway is loved by many, but yet there have been at least 3 instances I've personally seen where he became physically threatening to people, once even slapping a spectator in the face (not in my group, and he was not provoked)....personally I'm surprised that he's still allowed to come to all the games.

SonofPianoMan

Being at MU from 87 thru 91 Freeway was always there.  I was actually waiting for Dukiet to suit him up and play him.  It could not have gotten worse than that in those days.  You folks should count your blessings because I'm uncertain of any other period of MU hoops that could have been worse.  Although every game from the Mecca our Freshman year through the Bradley Center was incredible fun!

Dwaderoy -
I'm glad that you wrote that, because I was reading the wiki and had heard the same story about him getting hit by a bus.  Anyway, I was thinking about starting a thread, but thought someone was pulling my leg on the story.  Even if it isn't true, I glad I'm not the only one who's heard and ..err.. believes it.

ilovefreeway

As you can see by my name, ilovefreeway.  I would love to know how he gets into games.  My old roommate is infamous for getting in a fistfight with Freeway on water st.

mu_hilltopper

Who won?  I'd guess Freeway, as it's obvious he knows some karate, seeing his dance moves.

I once asked the head of ticket sales at Marquette, "No clue."

TallTitan34

I know one of the ticket guys at Marquette said he was told to just allow him entry no questions asked.

There was a short blurb in an article about 5 years ago.  Freeway was mentioned as a famous Milwaukee legend.  The article doesn't really say much about Mike McCarter the person, just the he attends lots of sporting events.

I talked to him tonight at goolsby's after the game and asked him how many MU games he was going to this year and he told me all of them except wisconsin because its sold out, and west virginia because its too early in the day - that he'll be waking up and shaving at 11am in the morning.
If you can't be an athlete, be an athletic supporter.

I remember freeway was on the bench to support Bob Dukiet's teams

You heard it here first. Davante Gardner will be a Beast this year.

Good stuff, guys.  Someone be a mench and get this into the wiki.

MUCrisco

It should probably be mentioned that Freeway is autistic.
