According to a confidant of Donovan, St. John's wealthy alum Mike Repole - who built his fortune as co-founder of Vitaminwater maker Glaceau - represented himself as an advocate for the school and offered the Long Island product a contract in excess of $3 million per year to take the job.

"Thank you so much but no thank you" is how the Donovan confidant described the reply.

Don't blame him.  Why would he want to take a $500,000 pay cut and move to a state with an income tax?

He truly hates America for not doing his fair share.

;)

The bigger note is that St. John's is going big, tip my hat to them.  They may not get who they want but they are trying.  Hewitt, Donovan, I'm sure a few others as well they will try to go after.  If they land a proven NCAA coach from a major school, that will certainly excite their fan base and help get the attention of a very tough NY media.

The larger issue is how many teams wind up paying coaches big salaries.  Often, it's not about pushing the athletic department to spend more as it is about a very wealthy benefactor willing to foot the bill (read Dick Strong).

DePaul has been making noise about paying up to get "name" coach.  How is their Sugar Daddy that is willing to pay up?

I know that was sarcastic but he still pays Federal income tax in Florida, he just doesn't have to pay state income tax.

Im sure Daley has found some way to slide funds for a new coach to his alma mater in some shady fashion.

Three million is more than DePaul spent for their ENTIRE men's basketball budget for the last year that figures were available (2008?).  Wow, I really wonder if DePaul has any chance to become competitive.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

The Seth Davis article on the Yahoo banner indicates that DePaul is willing to spend upwards of $3M on coach.

The Chadwick family that started the Ford City shopping mall gives huge bucks to DePaul.  They are also instrumental in DePaul's recently announced $100 million capital campaign.

Maybe they are ponying up for a new coach?

The Northern Iowa coach just got a raise, so he will not be the first "stepping stone" in the coaching moves.  I was sure this guy was front-runner for Iowa job (or others) with a much larger salary, but I guess he was commited to a smaller school that gave him his chance.

Tan Tommy is just getting chump change at IU. May be time to get the word out to St. John's and DePaul while he's still hot.

If another school offers him 3x that, I can't believe he'd stay.

Pfft.  Tan Tommy had his tailor install UV lights inside of his track suits long ago.  No need to go to tanning salons and mingle with the peasants.

I remember a story about either MLB or NFL players who, because they played on the road, have to pay state income taxes in the states they are earning the income, i.e., play in California, Texas, MN, NY .. you pay income taxes in all 4 states.

Wonder if that's the same with NCAA coaches..

That is correct for professional athletes.  Known as the "Jock Tax"
