Title: Leon Bond vent thread
Post by: tower912 on July 30, 2021, 12:20:28 PM
No more messing up the recruiting thread with this one.

Good luck, young man.   Remember MU if you want to transfer home.

It doesn’t make or break the program but it would be nice to see some recruiting wins, especially alleged priority players.

This one feels tough because he was in our back yard, was a statement recruit (ala Ellenson for Wojo), and we were in on him first. UVA didn't even offer until 2 weeks ago. Felt like he was coming until the last 24 hours.

Tony Bennett has personally recruited Bond for 2 years now, he just waited on the offer til Bond could visit there and Bennett could see him in person.

Shaka had a lot of ground to make up in this recruitment.

Maybe Bond just wants to play for a team first coach

And a coach who puts wings into the NBA.

Kid sounds selfish if he’s worried about the NBA.  Maybe we dodged a bullet

Whoa, wait, who took over Muggsy's account?

I'm not exactly a fan of "nonchalance" during the course of any MU hoops situation.

Whoa, wait, who took over Muggsy's account?

When it comes to a potential recruit and his decision (once it's over) you have to have the next man up mentality.   It's simply beyond our control and doesn't require further analysis.  Nonchalance on the court among the players wearing a MU uni?  That's a different story Rocky.  :)

Wonder if this an indication of Shaka's recruiting prowess or more an indication of the crappy image that Wojo-Dukiet put MU in for prospective recruits from MU's backyard. The 2022 recruiting class for Shaka is really crucial.

Mostly the latter I think. Our program became a bottom feeder and reaching NCAA and finishing 6th in the conference had more or less become a pipe dream. It’ll take some time to rebuild. There were zero inroads developed with Trimble and Bond before Shaka got here.

The individual pieces will be sorted out in due time, but at the end of the day I’m confident MU will put out a much better product going forward.

“I think Virginia really spoke for itself. I've been talking to Virginia since I want to say my sophomore year of high school but it's been real quiet so when I went down, it there spoke for itself. It really is an amazing program. Coach Bennett showed a lot of love. I got to go down and meet some of the guys, hang with some of the guys, so it was real cool. It really was amazing."

“Coach Bennett told me that he was going to offer me on my birthday, April 24, but he wanted to see me play in person so it'd be more heartfelt and everything, so actually see me playing games and not over streams. So, it was really cool. Really cool.”

That is not what happened.

Bond sucks because he was gettable relative to Trimble, and then next 3-4 Wisconsin guys will only end up at high majors as role players.

So Shaka’s recruiting misses are Wojo’s fault now?

It is not an indication of anything. It’s recruiting. Win some, lose more. That is how it works.

My only complaint on this one was SS telling Bond he could be the “hometown hero” if he came to MU.
A lot of kids don’t want to hear that….and subsequently go elsewhere.

Or that’s something that mattered to him and a major reason why he considered MU. Shaka has been doing this awhile, I trust he knows what’s important to a recruit he spent this much time on.

Didn’t seem to matter all that much….if at all.
And perhaps it was pressure that he didn’t want.
Doubt we’ll ever know.

Or Shaka played a card that Bennett could not. When its a local coach in the midst of a total rebuild vs. a coach with a recent natty and a major ACC team, blaming Shaka as some scoopers have is disingenuous. I also suspect that Shaka's identifying Bond as a priority was just to stroke Bond's ego.

Bond was absolutely a priority. UVA won out.

100%. That said, it's hard to get local kids to stay local. It's an uphill battle for sure--part of going to college is getting out on your own for the first time. Playing 30 minutes down the street doesn't have that appeal.

Move on, gang.

The young man did what he thought was right for him. With this world of transfers, if Marquette was the right answer, maybe we will see him a year from now.

Either way, I can't say I blame him. Virginia is an ACC school that has a recent natty. We have a new coach, a new system and unknown prognosis. Our coach is well respected but he's yet to coach a single minute in the Big East. If I was a recruit, I might like and respect Shaka, but I would be leery until I saw the product on the floor.

With Bennett, what you see is what you get. With Shaka, you're betting at the margin this year.

It’s disappointing that it is a local recruit that seems to be very talented that we made a high priority.

I think I was more disappointed when I thought Shaka was the first to pursue him really hard and UVA came in later. After hearing that they were on him for 2 years, I’m pretty impressed Shaka got this close with him.

Honestly, recruiting is on the lower end of my worries and trust Shaka will get talent here. I’m much more interested how this team gels and progresses through the season.

I think we have a nice (albeit young) core. If Shaka can coach them up and they improve as the year goes on, a “slow” recruiting start won’t really worry me.

Speaking of wide net, has anyone noticed how many offers Virginia Tech has put out?  According to 247, they have 75 offers outstanding for the class of 22.

Maybe our problem is the relative lack of offers Shaka has made
