The chatter is that an offer from Duke is probably not going to come. It seems Coach K has set his sights on Harrison Barnes instead, a ridiculously talented 2010 prospect. Duke already has offered Barnes, which shows how much he is coveted. I'd list the other schools that have offered, but that list is at least 25% of all the teams that made the NCAA tournament.
Haven't you heard?
Everyone is down on Jamil Wilson.
Not everyone. When he signs with MU I will be the only guy on here doing cartwheels. MU or UNC....heard it here again!!!!!
is it true that JW is no longer the highly rated prospect he once was? What happened? Is there a scholly available for him at MU?
I will also do the cartwheels, but as of now I don't see it happening. Believe it was Maymon or Wilson, not both.
Would love to have him. What are conditions under which this could happen?
No scholly available at the moment but Buzz will continue to recruit him.
I still haven't seen anywhere where NC is even in the mix. From all indications, Michigan State is probably the clear leader and his likely destination unless Izzo cools on the kid.
Also, Jamil is still a highly ranked prospect as he still is in everyone's top 100, its just that his status has slipped a little from top 10 to top 50. He has great potential with his ranking based more on that potential than finished product. Needs to learn to bring it everytime on the court. If he had a little more McNeal in him in terms of effort, he would still be ranked top 10.

I don't believe it was either Maymon or Wilson and not both. If Wilson wanted to commit right after Maymon did, Buzz would have taken him, no doubt about it. They both play the same position but Buzz would have worked it out as you don't say no to a top 50 player in your own backyard. Its just that (a) with Maymon on board and playing a similar position, Wilson was no longer a must have recruit and (b) with Wilson will not willing to make a decision for quite some time, Buzz didn't want to risk losing a player he likes while waiting on the outcome from a kid where we are not even leading for his services. If you trust Mark Miller and IWB, Buzz is still recruiting Wilson but it remains to be seen if we have the space for him.
and do not forget to add Williams into the whole no scholarships same position argumnet. Would love to sign as many top 50 kids as possible but there appears to be a log jam at the wing for the foreseeable future with Hayward, Fulce, Butler, Williams, and MAymon. A great collection of talent right there in it's own right. Still recruit him as a contingency but hopefully our focus is now on a 4-5 star 2g and a bigtime 4/5 for 2010.
When you play as poorly as Jamil has in the last 6 months to a year its pretty natural for people to change their opinion.
Justin Young of Rivals said that after watching him play at the Peach Jam that he was the most disappointing player there.
Hopefully he will turn things around but if people are down on him now they have good reason.
Not saying this is or is not the case with Wilson, but the fact is some kids "peak" early or are overrated early and then come crashing back down to earth. Remember, Krunti Hester and Scott Christopherson both were considered top 25 players after their sophomore years. After that, their abilities pretty much flattened out and other kids passed them by.
By all accounts Wilson remains an excellent prospect but it seems other kids simply have passed him by. No knock on him. Just the way it goes.

I'm not doubting you, but Krunti Hester was rated that highly? Really?
This may or may not surprise some that Trevor Mbakwe was top 25

I shared the same thoughts Chico. I just started following MU hoops right at the end of Deane's tenure, and I remember Krunti Hester was his lone recruit, due to come in for the '99-'00 season, then he got the axe.
I remember reading up on the kid and thinking the program appeared to be heading downward, and this kid was not even like Top 300.
I'd be surprised if he was ever a top 100 kid...from what I remember, anyway.

That was at the end of his junior or senior season. I can't find any links to prove or disprove my recollection, but I remember very well that Krunti was considered a stud prospect after his first couple seasons of high school basketball in Indy. He was a 6-foot-5 manchild as a freshman who put up major minutes and points on his school's varsity. Problem is, Krunti never really developed beyond that - or got any bigger - and ended up a not particularly athletic 6-foot-5 power forward in the college ranks.
sheesh remember all of drama around Marshall Williams.

He wasn't a grad assistant until well after the Final Four team. During the Final Four year, Swartz was at UWGB as a student assitant coach.

Remember that Swartz's issues were more mental than anything else. Marshall Williams was considered such a stud, and actually had a real good freshman year at NCSU. From what I understand, he is a teacher in MPS right now...as is Jose Winston.
Note both the Dematha Players on that list. They lose to my HIgh School (Gonzaga) 3 times that year. Just goes to show Talent isn't the only reason you win basketball games and we shoudl remember that after the Crean years. Sometimes a little coaching goes a long way to making players better.
With all due respect ToughMover I don't think your comment holds alot of water. At that time DeMatha had one greatest high-school coaches with Morgan Wooten -- who is featured in the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield Mass. DeMatha in those years (and many prior) was a powerhouse that consistently fed players to top-programs. Morgan's players were talented and well coached.
Maybe Gonzaga has had success against DeMatha consistently, but using that as a chance to poke Crean doesnt make sense.

However, intuition tells me that there is a statistically significant correlation between the pre-judged strength of a recruiting class and the subsequent performance of a college team.
Example, in the previous three years, both Memphis and Kansas had two top 10 RSCI recruiting classes.
A pre-judged, highly ranked recruiting class may not guarantee success, but I'd rather take my chances with one.
oh - and if you boil it down, pretty much everything we as fans do with sports is kind of silly.

Jason Kapono is in the NBA record book as the most accurate three-point shooter in league history and is a very solid role player. He's not a star by any stretch, but he is a productive NBA player.
As someone else mentioned, Jason Richardson (averaged about 22 ppg last year) is on that list, as is Samuel Delambert (10 ppg/10 rpg last year).

i have absolutely no idea where krunti hester was ranked as a freshman but I will give you this tid bit as to where he was as a senior to be. That was back during my AAu involvemtn time and having heard krunti verballed to Mu I mosied over to watch him during one tournament. His AAU team had the young man out of Lawrence North, Joihn Stewrt who passed away and was a Kentucky signee in the middle. They also had two really good PF's I assumed one of them was Krunti and was excited. then I asked one of the coaches which one was Krunti..he pointed over to the last man on the bench. He came in during mop up time and was in over his head. Sad day

Come now who needs a reason. I was just commenting on two players on the list. Jamil Wilson to me is something people should stop talking about. He doesn't' fit with the incoming group they already a have and yes you should always take talented players, its clear that most felt Maymonee was a higher quality. Yes it was a shot at Crean, but it was also a way to pump up the old ALMA MATER. Take it Easy Dude. However I still believe that its not always abotu talent. If that were the case them USC woudl win every year in football and MAryland woudl have never won a national titles. Experience and testicular fortitude matter too. And Next years MU squad is full of both. Getting back again to Jamil. Everyone shoudl knwo that sometimes its okay not to get all the best IN-state players. HE was holding some scholarships hostage and chose to make a late date, this may end up costing him in the end.
But Wilson will be critical to THIS recruiting class if someone doesn't qualify.
Because Partial Qualifiers have never worked out at MU. THe obsession over Wilson seems ridiculous to me. He is a player falling down the boards which to me seems to mean that he hasnt' improved. That is troublesome to me, I'd rather have a palyer who has worked hard to get better each year and went from unranked to top 50 then a guy who started out in the top 10 and then did not get better form year to year and ended up a top 40. The former are guys like McNeal and Wade, the later are players like Scott Merritt and Terry Sanders.

Just a minor thing but the Big East has a league policy that prohibits schools from taking on partial qualifiers.
Thanks for the correction Deer, in the words of the immortal Johnny Carson "I did not know that" regardless, I will tutor him here in Madison if that is what it takes, I could get him that A in social studies

I wouldn't think it would be. I could be wrong, but as long as you aren't supplying him with books for free or slipping him money or other gifts I would think you would be able to tutor a future D1 basketball player. Kids can study together in school, and if a kid wants to get help studying he shouldn't be prevented from that. Again, I don't know but if there is a rule against it I think it would send a bad message, discouraging kids from getting help in school.
Another note about that list of players, I remember when Joseph Forte was being billed as the next Michael Jordan part way through his freshman year at UNC, and then he left early and definitely should not have. Haven't heard a thing about him since...
That is true about partial qualifiers, but if you look at the qualifying page all Maymon has to do is raise his grade point like .2 percent and he'll be qualified (guessing). Its not a matter of doing better on the ACT. My guess is he has like a 2.2 and needs a 2.4 because he got 18 on his ACT, or something like that. I guess that because the press conference mentioned that he needs to retake a few classes this summer, so those grades will replace the likely failing grades that are lowering his GPA. Its seems he understands the importance of this and will get it done. Personally I'm not worried.

Was it Harold Minor? I know his last name was Minor, he was supposed to be the next guy and flopped as well. Then stackhouse, who ended up being solid.
Esoteric,
If you look at requirement #4 of the link that you posted, you will see the requirements are combined such that if he has a low GPA he needs to do better on the ACT/SAT. Therefore, I don't think he is as sure of a bet as you. If its just GPA, I think he can easily get to a 2.4. However, I still think he would need to do well on the ACT.
