Nelly on 12 was a great shoutout to me
This looks like an old school men's US open. Fast, firm, tilted greens. Penal rough. And a par 3 that can end your week early.

If it was setup like this for the men, there wouldn't be enough fainting couches available for those pampered &@$!?

Just now saw the replay.
Weirdly, one of the things I love about golf is that this kind of thing can happen to the best golfers in the world. It's a humbling goddam game!

Whatever happened to fairways 22 yards wide, 4 inch rough, and fairways firmer than my driveway?
not so sure the course was set up very well with a cut line of 8 over and eliminating 8-10 of the top golfers in the world. seeing a few top 10" miss the cut is one thing...this course got into a lot of heads
yes, we all like to see challenges, but I don't think this is going to be good for business nor an accurate look at some of the best golfers in the world. some lucky soul will win this thing and probably very little to be seen thereafter

all I'm saying is i'm sure they lost a lot of viewers. if that's what they want, fine. but regardless of how tough, hell make em run the course and turn it into speed golf. whenever tiger missed the cut, which wasn't too often, they lost viewers.
in women's, there is much less room for error. how many golfers does women's have that average fan can identify with? well, it just dwindled by about 10 and now you have slap shot Sally in contention

Better this than needing to shoot -20 to have any chance at a major title. What an embarrassment that was.
This week's winner will have earned it. IMO, winning a battle of attrition is more interesting than winning a birdie fest.

I watched Lucas Glover win a US Open and Martin Kaymer win one by 7 strokes. If people don't want to watch, people don't want to watch.
Slap Shot Sally can kick your rear end on the course and the average schmo bellyaching about who is in contention. Watching them handle the pressure and the course is riveting to me.
I don't disagree with the larger point, that the USGA would love Nelly and Rose Zhang in contention on Sunday. But that's golf. And sports.
I agree with Rocket, but also the other side of the coin. I love tough challenges on the course and this track looks like it is tough. That said, I will likely watch for a bit to see the course and if Nelly was in the hunt I definitely would watch a lot longer this weekend.
If Asterisk Talley won the Women's US Open, do they put an asterisk after her name because she's an amateur, or do they just let her name stand as is? :D

Ha! Wow....I didn't realize she's 15.
I enjoy the putts that take 15 seconds to settle.
Promo on 'Live From' for the men's US Open. From the greatest challenge comes the greatest triumph.
The ladies will have a birdie fest at the Meijer. They always do.

I changed my mind on watching today. I did not realize the amateurs were doing so well. Looking forward to watching today.

to watch Lucas glover and martin kaymer beat the best is one thing. it's another to watch them beat sloppy seconds
yup, that's golf. I love to see a challenging course myself especially watching some of the best navigate their way around some tough shots. their putting always amazes me
Why does the course being super-tough make it more likely that Korda and other great golfers miss the cut? They had as good chance to make the cut as anyone. Better, actually, because they're superior golfers.
Some of the greatest golfers ever have won on some of the toughest tracks.
Koiwai is listed at 5'2. Saso 5'5 Despite Farue falling a bit back the diminutive golfers are doing quite well. But Minjee may be too good. :(
Sounds like attendance records being broken again at Lancaster. Course is really showing off. Proper test.
Minjee starting to buck

My bad - 3 before Clark were -6.
Should be a fun finish. Sounds like 16 might be moved forward to be a drivable par-4. Where will they put the pin on 12? 18 has played hard. Any pin towards the front will make it dicey for someone needing birdie or par to win.
Andrea Lee looking to fulfill the promise she showed as an amateur. Minjee gunning for her 2nd in 3 years. The Smiling Assassin looks for major 2. Yuka Saso after her 2nd US Open and the unlikeliest winner could be Wichanee Meechai.
Can't see anyone running away with it. Pulling for Andrea

Pin on 17 is a fun one, too. Players can get to it and have birdie chances but if they're short, that's a tough up and down from that bunker
I signed up to be a marshal for 2025 us women's open at Erin hills. we were given a special opportunity thru legends golf club, so i'm assuming i'm in- really looking forward to next years event
Still not sure why playing a tough course under tough conditions is any more of a challenge or disadvantage for the best golfers than it is for golfers who aren't as good.

I signed up to volunteer as well. Have not heard back, but I will attend either way.
I mentioned last year that I attended MU' tournament at Erin Hills last Labor Day weekend and highly recommend it. Will be back out there this year.

Going to be fascinating watching the women play there. Long irons and woods into those greens will take real creativity. Weather might be dicier than when the men were there in 2017.
Carnage at Lancaster. Just wild stuff
Minjee Lee's meltdown today is shocking.
The leader has ice water in her putter and will probably hold on. That's the bottom line because of the stone-cold Saso.
Great performance by Yuka Saso. 2 US Opens at age 21. Impressive stuff

a couple of years ago, Mrs rocket and I won our club"s couple's match play. yesterday we missed the cut. I am not by any means comparing our stuff to women's us open, but golf- it's the way the cookie crumbles.
we had some horrendous holes but were still in contention until the par 3, 16th hole. we each hit decent shots, but each in a sand trap. mine, pin high, but fried egg into the embankment. it almost bounced out of it's lie, and if it does, it rolls to bottom of the trap and I have a fairly routine sand shot. it stayed and I had one foot in trap and one in sand, with ball at mid thigh level.
I don't care who you are, the % of getting a decent shots off onto a tough green ain't good. I fly the shot over the green, into some crazy thick rough getting ready for wsga state amateur in a few weeks, semi-behind a small Adams crab tree, 10 yards off the green. 3rd shot on but rolls down severely banked green and rolls just off leaving me with a 25 foot uphill putt on stimp 13 greens. 3 putt for a 6. finish out 17 and 18 with net par on 2 of the tougher holes on the course. yes, the last one, #18 ya'll watch people 4 putt...f'em, we 2 putt, and miss the cut by 2 strokes.
I've come closest I've ever come to holes in one multiple times on this hole on #16
being able to write about this, this morning has been very cathartic and therapeutic for me-thank you!
da game of golf can be cruel, but ya gotta move on eyn'a

That's a fun story and I'm glad you found that telling it was a cathartic release.
But it still doesn't explain why a tough course and/or tough conditions would hurt the best pros more than it would hurt pros who aren't nearly as good.
It's Nelly Korda's fault that she turned into a hack like you or me on #12, not the course's fault.

how they hold it together during/after a hole like #12 takes A LOT of self control. those kinds of holes, i've seen a few clubs helicoptering into ponds before. none of mine of course, golf clubs ain't cheap

A buddy of mine once chili-dipped two chips and, after the second, helicoptered his wedge onto the clubhouse roof. One of the funniest things I've ever seen on a golf course.
Hot tempered buddy, tops a 3 wood, snaps it. Next swing, tops his hybrid, snaps it. Same buddy bets us he can go a whole season without snapping a club. He lost the bet on his 3rd hole of the year.
