Title: MU @ Xavier game thread
Post by: mileskishnish72 on March 06, 2024, 02:27:15 PM
Dang. Started this and then realized I couldn't surpass We R for the most premature game thread. Maybe BET first game thread?

Two of Xs key reserves are done for the season.  Dailyn Swain had an appendectomy this week.  Sasa Cianni has been shut down with a "lower leg injury".

But, it is Xavier’s Senior Day and everyone knows you’d rather not play then. It turns an otherwise indifferent and incompetent team into tigers.

Go8ng to be a close game no matte4 what.  They have key guys out and we do too.   Need a win here.   Need to rebound and hit 3s.   Go Marquette!

As Muggsy says- LFG!  Want this game and not 3 game losing streak heading into postseason, regardless of bad luck that hit team with Kolek’s injury when we had road Creighton and UConn back to back.  Get a W and back on track today. Xavier’s been meh this season, but Cintas is still tough place to win. I expect it won’t be easy.

They don’t have one of the best players in the country out though.  We put up good fights the last two and hope we get it done today.

Here’s hoping both teams play hard and have fun!  Basketball is just a game.  These kids agreed to play for their universities, not the coaches or their basketball future and what matters isn’t wins, but they represent the university they attend

Big game for a few reasons:

Unless Nova beats Creighton MU needs a win to avoid the 4 seed in the BET.

A loss would be a blow to MU’s hope for a 2 seed in the NCAA.

MU needs a win to show that they can win a game without Kolek.

Not a major issue, but it would be nice to get second place (even if a tie) in the final conference standings.

BET seeding is for that purpose only.

In terms of big dance, probably doesn’t matter a whole lot. But it matters a ton for BET seeding, avoiding UCONN until the BET champ and avoiding the dreaded Thursday afternoon game next week.

Oso good, but Ross, Joplin and Gold have zero combined. Just hoping not for a 5 for 31 from three game like Butler.

Turnovers and three point shooting is ugh.   Get them in foul trouble, no bench.  Oliveri already with two, take advantage, but turnovers.

But my thoughts for next year is need another guard to be legit top 25 type.

I don’t think we will suck.

If Joplin can get 10 3s attempted today as open as the 1st 3, I'd take it.

Gotta keep firing. Great looks. Just stick em.

He’s contested pretty well.

I’m not seeing what you all are seeing. We can’t buy one from outside and X is hitting some tough shots.

I don’t think we are playing badly at all. We’re rebounding offensively. Not turning it over. Forcing turnovers. Just haven’t finished.

Correct in all but we need to hit shots.    Shooting 20% on 3s.    Ugh!
Title: Re: MU @ Xavier game thread
Post by: bradforster on March 09, 2024, 04:49:59 PM
Ross is clearly a liability offensively right now.  If he simply throws the ball rim high on the pass to Oso it’s an easy dunk.  That ball was at least two feet too low.

I am definitely optimistic on Tre.

Off season has to be jump shot focused. But the game is there.

I’d just prefer he’s not lead guard when it appears we kinda know what he will be surrounded by next year.

I guess that’s also something I’m not necessarily adamant on either.

We don’t need another TK or “lead guard” as my word choice meant.

More so another PG with experience. Tre becomes the new Sean(assuming he’s not playing) from this year with more PT. Then a start PG who doesn’t require as much as Kolek.

Up 7 with the ball and the last shot and he is pushing the pace getting called for a travel.

Instead of a 7-10 point lead...4.

Up 9, 45 seconds to go.......

Foul shooter, two points.

Have ball to run clock down to 4 seconds.  Oso drives????, then turnover leading to a three.  Boom, down to 4 point lead.  Why did Oso drive?  Hold ball till like 8 left and shoot.

Better win.  FYI, three of their starters, including their two bigmen and leading scorer have two fouls apiece.  Get them in foul trouble, Oso driving. They have no bench, all injured,  except that taller guy who made a three. Up nine with 40 seconds to go hurt.

3 refs and Val Ackerman should be fired after that game.  If the BEAST wants to put a good product on the court and on the TV, they cannot hire clowns like that to officiate.  It has happened far too often.  The best "basketball" conference needs to have professional refs.

Yes it was. There are very few teams in the country that could compete at the level Marquette did today without their All-American best player. Punctuated by a very poised closeout in the final five minutes. This is college basketball, games are almost always messy.

I think Xavier played inspired... Senior night I think

Marquette just beat an inspired Xavier. We were as a team, solid.   I know FTs and let downs and Jop could be better... But we were solid. Xavier playing great couldn't handle it.

I'm encouraged!

So now it will be Villanova on Thursday unless Providence knocks off UConn.

Then it would be St. John’s.

Very good win by MU. Aside from the timing of Kolek’s injury, I think it was a great three game test for the rest of team. Far better than playing the lower half of the conference.

3 refs and Val Ackerman should be fired after that game.  If the BEAST wants to put a good product on the court and on the TV, they cannot hire clowns like that to officiate.  It has happened far too often.  The best "basketball" conference needs to have professional refs.

What’s wrong with Jop?  Seems like we have been saying that most of the season.  And lately, Ross.

Some players play better coming off bench.  Ross has been starting last three games and I still don’t think he has a made field goal.

Jop had an off night. It happens.

Gutsy-ass win. Kam's best game in a Marquette uniform. Stevie was fuggin' nails down the stretch.

Avoided the rake and on to NYC.

He had one today. Got to the line and played some solid defense.

Going to be a big summer for him.

He made one tonight. He hasn’t shot the 3 well since having flu. He plays D though. Ideally, Jop would be a 6th man. He’s can give a boost off the bench on O and wouldn’t be on the floor with Kam so often, which hurts the D.

He did, but that was it on offense.  But long arms on defense and athletic. I like him off bench, maybe he does also.  We will find out soon how it plays out.

Joplin had horrific day, with four points, zero rebounds, 0 for 5 from three and 3 fouls. Got burned twice on defense and analyst Hummel told him he has to be a bit better. After picking up third foul early in second, he sat most of second half.  Played only 19 minutes. When he is on from three, game changer and going to need few consistent games in a row.  Not a good, two bad, good, etc.

Felt like it was one of those days where Jop's struggles on offense affected his defense.  I expect him to bounce back - we need him.

any of our frosh coming in better than Ross or Jop?   if not, can Shaka actually go after a portal guy?

Missed shots will happen but rough game for Jop defensively.

Ya. Olivari missed a 3 in the 2nd half and got the rebound and blew right by Jop.

He did hit a huge game tying shot in the lane though.

Refs were bad both ways last night. I just wish there was some semblance of consistency with the amount of contact that's allowed.

Yeah, it's going to be interesting how we adjust in the NCAA. I remember one stretch where each team got mauled going to the basket without a call.

At the risk of mistakenly being accused of defending the refs... isn't it more difficult to see a foul in those scenarios? Should a ref charge a player with a foul based upon "I'm pretty sure that he fouled, even though I did not have a clear view"?

Yeah, it's going to be interesting how we adjust in the NCAA. I remember one stretch where each team got mauled going to the basket without a call.

UConn v Providence had the Three Mouseketeers: Clougherty, Driscoll and Breeding. It started with the Providence Bully Ball crap that they were letting go again but Hurley went ballistic, earning a well-deserved T.  All of a sudden the game turned around.

I get what Sultan has been saying about how bad college officiating has been for years. Yet, the game has changed tremendously, but the way officiating is deployed hasn't changed much. There is sports betting money and NIL involved now, and the independent contractor, old boys network needs to be turned on its ears as their mediocre performance has been put under the spotlight now. The NCAA needs to stop stuffing all the money in their own pockets and invest in officiating.

I was actually hopeful when G League officials started working NCAA games early in the season, but that went away when their season started. And we were back to the same old retreads doing retread things. In the end, I agree with Sultan that the NCAA won't do much: They'll eff up a one car funeral.

Yep. The NCAA, or its conferences, need to figure out how to employ these guys full time during the year. The model is broken.

Develop referee schools/camps/whatever.  Plenty of current players would like to remain in the sport.  Would it work?  I don’t know but it’s worth exploring
