As I said vs Illinois: Good Teams find ways to win. Enormous triple from Jones the Younger and imo the P of the G. Let's never forget to give diminutive players extra props!!! :)
Sean Jones and Chase changed the game in the second half. Sean is going to get a lot of time this season.

This will serve the team well in March where you just need to win even if you don't have your A game.
That shot also took serious stones my friends.

The Kid is good.
We beat a good team that was extremely well coached. Our team has learned what it takes to hang in there and win down the stretch.
More Sean and much, much, much less Mitchell. Brick Mitchell is to shooting what Walton is to announcing.
There's definitely a place for Stevie on this team. He's Derrick Wilson but with more offensive support around him.
But I think going forward Chase should probably be the 5th starter

I don't think I want to play UCLA come march.
JTY changed the game with his defense. The kid played with a lot of toughness.
I think that's the most gritty MU win I've ever seen. Nothing went right. Refs screwed us several times over. Went cold down the stretch. Kam fouled out. tKO hurt. Couldn't make a FT to save our lives. Win. Anyway.
Sean, Chase and Stevie will all have their times and places. And yes, there will be more Sean and Chase as they get better and more confident.
Bona just picked up his 9th foul.
Great team win.
Toughness down the stretch.
UCLA is a talented handful.
Go Marquette!
Give it your all against Kansas!

Agree with both of you. To be honest, I don't want to see Illinois or UCLA again. They have beat two very good opponents thus far.

Kolek's health is probably an underrated talking point today. Those bruising pics are crazy, there's no question he's still gutting it out on the court (and probably will be for 2-3 more weeks).
Most importantly, avoid Chaminade.
Guaranteed two games against top-10 teams.

It was a tough match for him today. Stevie is a better player than shown tonight and will do well for us. Needs to be a goldfish.

Stevie will continue to start, as he should, and will get better. It'll all come down to minutes and lineups anyway.
I wouldn't give up on Stevie. From my observations he gains confidence when he gets a chippie or two during the course of the game. There's no doubt he had a very rough night but I think he's more than capable of bouncing back.

Yup the only thing happier than all of us is our RPI.
UCLA is / will be a top 25 team for sure
To win this game with Tyko being mediocre and Kam essentially sitting the last 8 mins is a huge positive imo. We should be very loose and confident tomorrow. Kansas will not be nearly that physical defensively.

I'm fine giving Stevie the honorary start, but Chase and Sean need to be playing the majority of second halves in close games. We can't afford to play 4 on 5 on offense and he's not big enough to earn his way on the defensive end.
Stevie is a starter for a reason.
Don't think Shaka puts players on the floor to be honorary unless outcome of game is over and it is garbage time.

I feel for Stevie...you know he puts the work in...but it was shades of early last year when you could see he didn't want to find himself open from 3 or at the line.
Sean, Chase, and eventually Tre are going to be hard to pass on.
That said, Stevie will have his match-ups/moments.
Great job by Shaka to sit Stevie and TKO at times tonight.
Of course Mitchell will continue to start but his shot is soooo bad....and has been his entire career
If MU wants to achieve the ultimate goal, Stevie Mitchell has to be a big part of it. He will have better days and I am not worried about it. That said, plenty of guys sitting on the bench that are ready to go.

The 17-0 run was poetry. The rest was a slog. But a great W. This old man needs to get some sleep!
I don't think one can overstate the importance of that W. To get a shot at Kansas and then Tenn or Purdue is fantastic. Especially considering the alternative. And yes, we can beat these teams. We do have to step it up but are absolutely capable.

He couldn't attack inside because of UCLA's size. He'll continue to be a major contributor.
Stevie still has a place. We won a lot of games last year with him as a starter.
I said in the game thread in the 2nd half that this was clearly just not a game where he had any benefit in crunch time though.
His asset is tough man D and against a big strong team like UCLA hes zero on offense is too much to overcome.
Sean and Chase are both much more disruptive defenders which is what you need against their big guys deflecting balls and causing strips and deflections.

Alright....time to move on. What do we do with Dickinson? Can we get under his skin? I don't care for the guy.
Lenny
17-0 reminded me of poetry from another era. I was just telling my sons this afternoon that Al's teams could look horrible for 30 minutes but two five minute spurts would be the difference in the game.
Never a doubt!
Took guts for Sean to take that shot, as his previous attempts didn't look great. But the kid had a heck of a game.
We played so well, operating inside out, to build a little lead. But then we got impatient and fired a bunch of unnecessary, early-clock 3s.
The officiating was brutal against us in the first half, but I thought it was OK in 2H. Also, it's hard to b!tch too much about the officiating when you miss a bazillion FTs.
We got much less than usual out of Kolek and Kam but still beat a team that's already good and will be real good by season's end.
Thank goodness Jop was on, because that made exactly one of our shooters we can say that about.
Stevie will still have some big moments for this team. Don't write him off too soon. We have great depth this season, though. So important.
Oso was enormous in the second half - right down to his great challenge of the tying shot attempt at the final horn.
Fun game, big win. Let's kick KU butt!

good problem to have but Sean & Chase clearly outplayed Stevie tonight...
Stevie looks rushed and afraid when shooting, including his FT. Hopefully he shakes it off, after hearing all the work he put in and "don't sag on Stevie," I was excited for some O from him.
4-0. That's all I care about right now.
I live Stevie, but I honestly think he's too smart for his own good with that 4.0gpa. You can almost see him doing the math in his head while he's rising up to shoot. Here's to hoping he can relax and just play. We're fortunate though in being 10 or 11 deep.

Why do you think Sean is going to replace Stevie because of his offense? Thats ludicrous until proven otherwise. Chase is the guy if that happens.
Wow I'm amped! I think I need to calm down a bit.
Careful what you wish for with Dickinson's size plus Kansas natural talent. But im looking forward to playing them tomorrow.
I think game wise they will be a better fit for us to play than Illinois and Kansas(Edit. UCLA) where we had to fight big defensive teams.
Better chance we get boat raced if the self inflicted missed bunnies/free throws or wide open 3s continue. But we also have a depth edge and there should be a good consistent pace to the game.
Tk better be ready for another battle though. Probably wont get smacked from all over tomorrow, but hes gonna get all he can handle from 1 guy. Harris.

They will be ready and hit more threes than they did tonight vs UCLA. Even if they don't win it's a great measuring stick. Illinois and UCLA are probably 4/5 seeds at best come March. Kansas , Purdue and Tennessee are 1 and 2 seeds at worst. The next two games are absolutely crucial in terms of development of the program. It's quite possible to say after Wednesday that Marquette is back.

I didnt say Sean was going to replace Stevie. I said Chase and Sean. And Sean gives you basically the same defense with the ability to break down a defense by driving the lane.
Stevie will have his games undoubtedly. But I think tonight showed he's going to be the eighth man instead of the fifth man.
Howards
The program is already back. Obviously next two games are big and only enhance the program's reputation nationally.
Best part for me, there are probably several different ideas of being back means on here based off of age. I can say with a high degree of confidence this is the best place the program has been in 46 years.

This. Stevie's at his best when cutting in the paint. Last two opponents clogged the paint. There will be future games where he has a lot more room to operate
Stevie has been cut off the past two games and that is basketball. There are going to be plenty of games that he gets to the basket and does his thing. Good news, MU has plenty of options to offset down nights by individual guys.
I was over looking at Reddit and saw these statements:
- "I'm bummed UCLA couldn't force OT, but overall I am really happy with how the team looked. Still plenty of stuff to work out, but this young team just took the number 4 team in the country to the buzzer. Lots to be excited about."
- "That was a really good game. Our inexperience really showed in the second half. I guess you can't give up a 17-0 run to the #4 team in the country and expect to win."
- "We've been warning that this team will look bad and raw early on. We're so far ahead of schedule if that's what we can do to a very experienced and talented Marquette squad that swept UConn last year."

Yep. And Shaka has a very good read on who should play in which situations. With the role players, he likes the "hot hand" theory - which can also apply to defense - and he's outstanding at using it.

yes. He needs to be a lock-down defender. His offense should come off slashes in the lane and steals.
Much discussion before this game was that UCLA played the weakest schedule in the country through 3 games. Many of us fans including myself expected a comfortable win last night and it just didnt happen. UCLA is young but I expect them to compete with Arizona for the Pac-12. The probably won't win it but I could see them as a 4/5 seed come tournament time.
Anything to keep adding to the resume. This should remain a Quad 1 win throughout the year.

Agreed. Bummer that for all the off season talk about significant shot improvement, his threes are way off. Still think last night was less about benching him than riding Sean and Chase. They were so disruptive to UCLA; far more than any of the starters. Props to Shaka for deviating from the normal rotation.
I think come tournament seeding time, this win will have aged quite well. UCLA has a lot of talent and are well coached. They'll figure it out and they'll be tough.

Yep! Nice to be the team everyone wants to upset; and if we win tonight, I'll be upset if they call us beating Kansas an upset.

The last two wins are going to look very good down the road. Those were two very good teams that MU beat away from home and another step towards the ultimate goal.
The toughness of this group was incredibly impressive last night. Most teams would have crumbled but we stayed confident and connected. We also scored 17 straight in like 3 mins. Do not take for granted the spurtability we possess in times of danger and Shaka's ability get the best out of our guys when we need it.
Not to be a downer, but 55% on free throws is not going to cut it most nights. We played through it against UCLA. But you simply can't leave that many points on the floor and be an elite team.
If we make free throws, this was a coast to a double digit win, not a nailbiter.
Did anyone else happen to catch Cronin mentioning at halftime - kind of casual and in passing - "Kam Jones looks hurt"?
I didn't really notice anything during the game but I only started looking for it in the second half. He was moving pretty well out there, hit a 3 and a Kam-special twisting layup, before foul trouble curtailed his PT (and eventually ended his night).
