In the annals of Marquette basketball, who will go down in history among Scoopers, and all of MU Fandom for that matter, as the biggest enigma, confounding fans for decades:
The Creans
The Hausers

For me, the Hausers. I will never find out, but I still want to know what was exactly said that led to the departures.

The burning question is did he write a letter before Joey got waived?
I think most Scoopers have made peace with Crean. If anything, Buzz was a worse departure.
The Hauser departure accelerated the demise of the Wojo era which brought us the Shaka era. We should all send them a thank you letter!

Time to put on a pair of these.
I find it hard to be upset with the Hauser's and Wojo at the same time. If I were the Hauser's...I would have been out the door as well.

Pfft. I guess u never saw Crean in the benz
In retrospect, and with distance, Crean makes sense. 2 different coaches won championships, a third went to the NC game, it was a blue blood. It stung because he left us, but for someone like Crean who grew up in B10 country with that program what it was, I get it.
And he's probably been the most successful coach at Indiana since Knight left. Davis flamed out when Knight's players left, Sampson had his"scandal," Miller never got off the ground, and Woodson has been fine, but not multiple B10 titles and second weekend NCAA trips good.
The Hausers were a worse departure, but ultimately while harmful in the moment were long term helpful for the program because that sped Wojo's departure.
I agree that the worst was Buzz, not just because he left for a clearly lesser program, but because he took shots at the Big East on his way out the door and because he's been unwilling to make amends a decade later. That one hurt then and I don't feel any more gracious feelings for him now. If anything, he's even more contemptible than when he left.

I was glad when TC left and sad when Buzz left.

Liked Wojo as a guy but never was convinced he was the coach. IMO, the letter saved us.
I would watch a 30 for 30 on Buzz leaving.
- Who first got in his ear that the NBE was doomed
- Why Va Tech?
- When did he decide to go?
- How much did that contribute to 17-15 & 9-9?
- If we win those two 2OT losses + dance, does he stay?
- If he stays do we get Diamond Stone?
VT--they opened their checkbook
Buzz was checked out his entire last season here.
He wuzant stayin' cuz da administration dug in hiz chit
Wuzant gettin' Stone wit or witout Buzz.
What U say DC, hey?
I believe part of the reason for VATech was he had a connection to the AD through Mick Cronin. Plus, they must have been pretty desperate based on the details of his contract that were released.
I think Buzz severely miscalculated on the success of the NBE however. I don't think any one "got in his ear" about it - it was a pretty common thought at the time.
OK, I'm an older Scooper but here's my list:
1) Jim Chones Leaving -- Next to Al's retirement, this had the most profound impact on Marquette basketball in its history. Had Mr. Chones stayed through graduation, we probably would have had at least one and possibly two more National Championships. The story has been well told many, many times over but the timing and the impact was huge. Coach McGuire deserves an enormous amount of credit for putting his players ahead of his program and, candidly, above himself. This one will always be the biggest enigma hovering over the program, especially after Larry McNeill left early the following year.
2) Majerus -- The best chance we had before Kevin O'Neill and Tom Crean of recapturing the magic of our program was Rick Majerus. He probably was too young and too inexperienced when he took over for Coach Raymonds and Coach Majerus likely failed in some recruiting battles he should have won. But seeing what Coach Majerus did at Utah leads many of us to wonder what a more experienced Coach Majerus could have done at Marquette.
3) The Hauser Meltdown -- In the end, even though we cooked it wrong, it turned out right. The Hauser meltdown probably cost us one decent NCAA run. Before the boys bolted, we were thought to be fifth in the country. Afterward, we were an also-ran. The way they handled themselves was bush league and we deserved better.

I don't think anyone could've put this any better. Kudos.

4. The Crean and Buzz years were for the most part pretty special, but Wojo set the program back for nearly a decade when we should have at the very least been competitive for a shot at winning the Championship. It was those 7 years however that gave us Shaka.

Brother 69:
A couple of other enigmas surrounding our program:
5. Shaka 1: When our leaders were replacing the Redneck, Coach Shaka reportedly was in the air and on his way to Milwaukee. The report was not correct, but what if it was? What if Shaka had taken our head coaching position seven years ago? Would he have stayed? When a Power 5 program came calling, would we have had another O'Neill/Crean/Buzz situation?
6. Wojo Reborn: Suppose Coach Wojo had agreed to the changes the athletic department wanted and hired an experienced bench coach? Had he stayed, would it have made a difference? Where would we be today?
7. Change of Direction: There were many, many rumors around Al leaving because he had been nickeled and dimed to death by Quentin Quade and the Administration. Suppose Al Kolek'ed em and stayed on for another decade? Chances are we would have had a much better record in 1978 and God knows how Al would have reacted to the Big East.

8. Al to the Bucks in '69.
Just want to say DGIES Thank you. You know your MU bb history, obviously. I think if Smart had been offered the job at MU in 2014 he would have thought seriously about it. He had success at VCU- final 4 in 2011 I believe and made the tournament every year. He only got paid 1.2 mill a year when he left. Marquette could have paid that. It was a good spot for him to land being from here. Texas offered him the job. Why didn't Buzz go to Texas? Anyway, the people who made the decision to hire a Coach K disciple thought they did the right thing. If Smart have been successful here would he have jumped to a greener pasture? Like what? Coaching jobs at schools like Kansas, Kentucky, Puke, and Villanova don't open up often. It was a missed opportunity, but it's water under the dam. Time to look to the future.
As concerning to Al-- That last year he lost some games early in the season and almost quit. I was so stressful. He battled for years with the NCAA about seeding in the tournament and in what regional we would be in. Despite the team records the Warriors got shafted-- Jacksonville? And then the blue bloods controlled the brackets, so maybe Kansas or UCLA wouldn't have to play the Warriors and get knocked out early. And yes, when he won he was tired and tired of the tension and the expectations of fans. He could recruit and had great assistants. Al's greatest ability was to coach a game on the sideline in the fourth quarter. It was hard at times. A rolled up newspaper slap at the half in the locker room to praise for an extra effort.
Anyway- sorry to be rambling- And you know what? If Columbus hadn't discovered America J. Marquette would never have discovered Michigan. I still have friends ask me: Where is Marquette? Is it in Michigan? Google it I say. Google it up your ass. Ring out ahoya

1. Moody Blues. "Question" is one of the iconic band's best 10 songs IMHO.
2. Old 97s' "Question" is a really good song from an underrated band that's been rocking for years. Bonus: My boss at my main freelance gig is Rhett Miller's cousin.
3. I never heard of that song by Taylor Swift, so thanks for the link, wades. After listening to it, I'm comfortable placing it behind the other two.
Question! - System of a Down > rest.

8. Al to the Bucks in '69.
Brother 69:
Had Father Raynor not told Al to pound sand and that he had a contract, we'd all be Bucky Badger fans.
God forbid!
Al built our program. All of the goodness that came to us in the years since began with and was because of the reputation Al McGuire built at Marquette.
Had Al left for the Bucks, we would have been crapola on a cracker and playing UWM and UWGB twice a year at the Old Gym.
Father Raynor knew what he had and its importance to the university.
He Knew!
Did Al reach out to Kojis and Rand to have them around the program as inspiration the way that we have our old legends coming around now? Did that start with O'Neil? Crean?
