Title: Blue ball for the trolls
Post by: tower912 on March 09, 2023, 01:34:28 PM
NLW and Farley with unused socks and tissue.
1. For me, when OMax got called for the T and Stevie picked up his second foul with that ridiculously weak push off, I had a chill go down my spine.  I had an inkling what was coming.  Can't afford to have Stevie out of the game and OMax flustered.
2.  All year, MU has made adjustments at halftime.
3.  I thought Shaka went to his bench at the wrong  time in the second half.  Got the lead, sat Kolek, Stevie, and OMax.  SJU regained momentum.
4.  Posh is back to his old self.  Stealing defensive rebounds.
5. And Soriano blocks. All of the SJU defense for that matter.
6.  I really thought SJU would do the isolation for Addae-Wusu all day.  MU really does not match up well with him.
6. Poor decisions down the stretch by those who usually don't make those mistakes.   Oso 2x.  Stevie.
7.  Other than Ross, not much from the bench.
8.  Free throws matta.
9. Big East tourney.  Freaking slog.
10.  Advance.   Move on.

Gotta play way better to even have a prayer vs Uconn but glad to at least make the semis.

So was it the StJ defense that caused us to slow the pace, leave TyKo on the perimeter, little movement for a lot of the game? When TyKo drove, when we moved, when we spaced we were successful. Seemed like a strange one on offense. Excellent defensive effort in key moments. I LOVE the double when the dribbler turns his back. Maybe now we will be loose and have a little fun.

Teams that defend with physicality are going to continue to give us trouble. I knew this one wouldn't be easy. I know tomorrow won't be either regardless of the opponent.

Agreed, but we often didn't even make them defend. Were they in some sort of zone ish set? I didn't quite understand the offensive game plan.

Get the crap game under the belt and move on.

9 for 34 from three.  Oso has 7 turnovers. Sloppy, stupid team turnovers, at least 8 of them and still win.  It was defense after the half and without the fouling points, no SJU baskets in OT.

Sidenote:  On Omax technical, he was not called for hanging on rim.  After he released from the hoop, he turned around and barked something at SJU player.  That's when ref teed him up.  Just watched the replay.

Just thank goodness this wasn't UCONN today and congrats to Shaka for first BE victory.

They were in a zone in the sense that teams aren't going to guard Oso and they're going to clog up the cutting lanes off of him.

Not our best performance, by a longshot.

But poor refereeing and seemingly conscious bias from this crew in favor of St. John's (great example - the Oso tip out of bounds off SJU player's hands that needed to get overturned) put us in an uphill climb from tip.  The Big East should be embarrassed by Mr High Legs and his pathetic, desperate cries for attention.

SJU played great defense - if you ignore the fact that Soriano should've been called for defensive 3 seconds on every possession.

If Oso is running point forward 3 feet above the elbow, Soriano cannot be in the paint - period.

If we have this ref crew tomorrow, we should threaten to leave the conference.

Agree that Mr. Highknees is bad. There were some very strange calls. Was it carrying on Oso 1st half? We turned it over enough that we couldn't blame the refs if we had lost, including the remarkable brain fart that caused the over and back. I thought we were done with the foul on the three, but we survived.

The offense seemed very stagnant down the stretch - a lot of TK dribbling and and Johnny Most would have said, fiddling and diddling. I think we do better when the ball moves and so do the players.

As many posters have said, we got through it. We are a below .500 team in the BET and this will be only our third trip to the semis.

Let's shake off the demons and show people what we can do!

This has to be a parody account, right?  You're so obsessed with crying about the refs that you don't know the absolute basics of the game.  You do realize there is no such thing as defensive 3 seconds in college basketball, right?

The refs weren't the problem.  They were bad both ways.  They let both sides play most of the game.  Yes, there were individual bad calls.  But it didn't make Marquette play horrendous.

I think this game emphasizes Stevie's value.  SJU''s first half run and MU's malaise happened with Stevie on the bench after that weak second foul.  Stevie came in in the last two minutes and it stabilized.

We're in agreement. The moment I saw O-max and Stevie had 2 fouls, I knew Johns was in a good position.

Everyone stepped up--Chase had some good run today (short of letting Posh get in his head...he has the speed to beat posh 10/10 times on the breakaway.

Let's shake off the demons and show people what we can do!

Oso being afraid to take a 12 foot shot completely eliminated the back cuts and easy access to the hoop. In some sense, very similar to when teams figured Tyler's game out last year and played the pass. It completely bogged down the offense.

Oso can make that shot. Regardless, he needs to take it once or twice to at least draw some attention. He and Ben Gold should shoot thousands of those this summer. I get it we want shots at the bucket and 3s, but that should be a high enough percentage shot and it would open up so many things for the offense that we are no longer getting. Tyler put the team on his back today, including on the boards.

This x1000!
He was even afraid to take a couple open 5 footers, and one of them late led to an immediate bad pass and turnover.

He did follow that with a great offensive board and put-back, and then that confident move followed by the hook.

It would be one thing if Oso passing that shot up led to an open three, but it leads often to a clogged passing lane turnover or a pass that barely gets to a guarded teammate.

Kudos to him for getting his confidence back late.

I am probably in a minority of one, I think Mr. Highness called the game consistently to no one's favor. Not a big fan of his though as he has a weird combination of letting the kids play hard and calling things tight . Takes the skill out of the game and introduces luck . It is all about him when it should be about the players .

When they steamrolled Kolek at the end of the game  and know foul was a classic example . Yet every damn chicken wing warding was called .

Glad we got the jitters game out of our system .

Johnnies gave us a classic Big East battle for 45 minutes

I hope next year Johnnies  schedule our home game with them at The Garden instead of their campus facility .

I understand everything is clear in hindsight and O-Max had to react in a split second of real time. But at the end of regulation, had he tapped the ball with his fingertips rather than wrap both hands on the ball and slam it home, the put-back PROBABLY would have beat the red light and counted. Not being critical, just saying.

My biggest concern coming into the day is MU would play tight while SJ got the jitters out last night.  That was apparent in the first half shooting/movement etc.  It was a good thing we kept it within 10.  In the second half, we got into a groove to get back into the game.  The best part is we still won so the jitters should be over.  If UConn is going to win (at this point up 22) then I want them to have a field day shooting and hopefully the return to the law of averages tomorrow but at the end of the day we are going to get their best game so we need to be ready.

Really poor first half, unusual to be out-efforted by the opponent. Silly shot selection, and really loose with the ball.

Got after it on D in the second half and St. John's submitted. We'd have won going away if not for some uncharacteristic sloppiness. That over-and-back by Oso ... ugh. Oso made a mild run at a quadruple double -- 10 pts, 11 reb, 5 ast, 7 TO. Almost all of his TOs were weak and he seemed pretty indecisive at times; I'm sure he'd say he didn't have his best game.

Really good energy from our guys the last 25 minutes, though. Keep that going, make a few more shots, and take care of the ball ... and I like our chances to win a lot of games from here on out.

I was watching the replay for that and I think even if it was a tip there wouldn't have been any time left.

It looked to me like the red light came on even before the ball hit his hands. The ball was certainly below the rim when the light came on.

I did not see one basket today and very happy about it. Got the ugly one out of the way and play better ball tomorrow.

Neither did SJU in overtime.

Bench play will be our death

Sean Jones-8, Chase Ross (who shot well) -10, David Joplin -16.

Stevie +20 Oso+15

This confirms the drop off.

But also shows SJ as the clear liability in this stat.

Naw, some teams will have the starting five shut down and the bench will pull us through.  Today it was just the opposite.

OT St Johns only scored on FTs. That was a huge disparity in calls in OT. As noted Kolek got stream rolled no call, then we get a ticky tack right after that.
And that was right in front of the useless highstepper.

My biggest concern as well. So much variance from night to night with those guys. Which is understandable for frosh, but Jop can't be unplayable.

Sean will be a good player and so will the rest of the freshmen.  But I'm glad those predicting he was the only reason for possible success this year were phenomenally wrong.

Bottom line on ESPN notes that this was the first time all season we won after trailing by 10 or more at halftime.

Also ... these 2 wins over St. John's improved our Close Win Quotient, so thank goodness we didn't crush them either time.

Games like this are why I don't like the BEAST conference tournament:
- BEAST refs are not good enough to work a tournament format
- MSG gives home court advantage to the NY/NJ teams
- OT game and a physical one at that late in the season just takes legs away for the real tournament
- Thanks for no injuries to MU.  Hope Soriano is OK.

I know it'll never go away because the TV revenue is too huge - but that was just not a good basketball experience.

Agree with the refs.  Big East refs are bad, but all refs in basketball are bad.  Subject worth deeper discussion elsewhere.

St. John's and Seton Hall have combined 6 Big East tournament titles.  St. John's hasn't won one since 2000.  Hall has one this century.

The Big East Tourney is incredible. So many iconic games and moments. The only thing better is the big dance. No other conference tournament, or even November tournament, comes anywhere close to it.

Would love to win the whole thing and obviously we can. Getting out of it healthy either way matters the most.

Totally agree. Winning this thing is banner worthy and would be fantastic. If we don't win, though, I'd rather bow out tomorrow and get the extra rest. Of course, if we lose tomorrow we will never know what would have happened and it would be fun to play on Saturday night. So let's just win tomorrow and Saturday. Grab a 2 seed and book tickets to Houston.

...and how many BET Champs are there west of Louisville. Zero. Only Pitt, Louisville and West Virginia have won. In the restructured Big East no team west of DC has won. There is truth saying MU, Creighton, X, DePaul and Butler go in at a disadvantage.

Nice summary Mike. The MU fans I met at halftime were, like me, shell-shocked.

Creighton has been to the final 3 times I believe.  One of those losses was to Georgetown.  Creighton fans travel well, too.

Rewatching this morning before going out to shovel...

The first half momentum disappeared  with Stevie and OMax out.   I think we take those guys for granted.

Addae-Wusu is a mismatch that Anderson should have used more.

MU is so mentally tough that when they do make gaffes they stand out.  We have become accustomed to clockwork-like precision.

MU will be the third youngest team in the big dance.  Another thing we take for granted.
