So happy for Jop. His defense got so much better as the year went on. If he gets a tad faster and controls the handle a bit more, going to be real hard to keep him off the court next year.

What was Collin Gillespie's when he came back after winning 2021 BEPOY?  What was Markus Howard's when he came back after winning BEPOY in 2019?  Why did both of the Co-BEPOYs (Kris Dunn and Ryan Arcidiacono) return the next season?  Luke Harangody when he won BEPOY in 2008?  Brandin Knight when he won BEPOY in 2002?  Troy Bell when he won BEPOY in 2001?  Troy Murphy when he won BEPOY in 2000?  Rip Hamilton when he won BEPOY in 1998?  Etc.

Lol seriously.  He's not an NBA guy.  Maybe could get some G League run and earn an opportunity, but he has said he loves everything that comes with College Hoops.

He has said he wants to stay in college as long as he's allowed to. He wont be leaving just to go sit in the G League and play meaningless basketball games.

Marcus Zegarowski was drafted midway through the 2nd round in 2021, and Kolek is better than he was.

Doesn't mean I think Tyler's leaving, but the NBA has found and playing time for prospects worse than Tyler Kolek.

It's a conversation for when he actually does want to leave.

He's played 0 NBA games.

That route isn't for everyone and I fully believe Tyler when he says he plans on staying in college as long as he can.

That opportunity for TK will be there down the line.

I was talking about getting drafted. But we both could find several examples of players less accomplished than Kolek getting NBA playing time.

Agree that this thread isn't the best place for this conversation. I just didn't love your knee-jerk dis of his chances.

I said he could get chances, but when I said he isn't an NBA guy I meant like "not a guy that is going to bolt the College atmosphere early to go play in front of 750 fans in the G League while he works for an opportunity."

No.

He's going to have to work his way there either way.  However, similar to Collin Gillespie or Cassius Winston, he is just a high level College point guard that understands his value to the College game.

He's got a lot more left in College Hoops and he knows it. He gets it.

Scoop says a lot of dumb things.  Like most fanbases.

Scoop is reactionary like all hard core fans.  Minute to minute of a game and then game to game.  People get caught up in the minutiae and can't see the big picture too often.  I don't even go to the game threads because they are cringe worthy.

But I think the overall perspective of the majority of scoopers was that Stevie was indispensable in his role and needed to be in the starting lineup.

I think Tyler Kolek is a way better NBA prospect than some here think. I'm not saying he's going after this year, but if his 2023-24 looks anything like his back half of this BE season, he will be on the radars of a lot of teams IMO.

Kolek has better size than either of them, a good 2-3 in taller.  He's a better passer and much better vision than Gillespie.  I don't think its crazy to say that he's a better overall scorer than Gillespie.

Also Winston was drafted in the second round, he didn't have to "work there".

We all want Kolek in a MU jersey for another 2 years, but making unfounded knocks to his NBA potential is just silly.  Marcus Sasser, LJ Cryer, and Grant Sherfield are all projected in the first 10-15 picks of the second round this year.  Kolek projects as well as any of them, especially since he's taller and a pure PG.

Hell, Tyrese Hunter is talked about as a second round pick coming out next year, and he can't shoot.

Keep improving his shooting and he'll get a legitimate shot. His passing alone is a premier floor spacing trait.

Again, I think Tyler could get run in the NBA but he's going to come back next year.  The NBA is all about quick offense being able to create your own shot.  At this point he really can't do that.  He can get to the rim really well here but that's a different animal in the NBA.

Maybe he uses his COVID year, maybe he doesn't.  Either way I'll enjoy watching him this year and next year and then hope he gets his chance.

Hopefully for Marquette fans your guarantee here isn't as wrong as the rest of your guarantees go.  Wisconsin just always gets it done, Marquette tries hard but can't stop anyone, Marquette will not beat UCONN this year, etc.

Tyler is going to be 22 later this month. Age matters to NBA teams. In NBA terms, he's kind of old right now as a prospect. I think he's back next year, but if he goes, I get it. Better to start your NBA journey (whether that's being drafted or the G League) at 22, then 23 or 24.

Overview: Kolek runs an offense as though born into it, like one of those musical prodigies playing Chopin on the piano at 9 years old. It's still astounding to think he had not been primarily a point guard before arriving at Marquette in the fall of 2021 and almost immediately demonstrating a skill for passing that made him the obvious choice to run the Golden Eagles' attack in his first season. As a sophomore, he assumed full command of one of the Big East's – and the nation's – top teams. It's not easy to become an All-American while delivering barely a dozen points per game, but Kolek creates plenty of baskets in other ways

Solid summary

Not sure why it's taken me so long ... but I just looked up George Mason's 2020-21 stats.

They ran a 3-guard lineup, and each of them averaged between 28.6 and 32.9 minutes and between 2.0 and 2.3 assists. Kolek was at 30.7 and 2.3. His 6.7 attempts per game from behind the arc led the team by far; the next closest was 2 per game behind him. One of the other guards led the team in overall attempts at 12.8 per game, almost 4 more than Kolek.

I remain amazed that Shaka could look at all of that (and no doubt tons of film) and say, "Tyler Kolek is gonna be my point guard for the next several years." So glad he did!
