Title: Student Section Question
Post by: Galway Eagle on February 26, 2023, 05:08:15 PM
Noticed last night there and at National Marquette day there was no jumping up and down yelling "ohhhhhh" like we used to. I recall this still being a thing before Covid. Have they only stopped recently? Also seems like a lot of the cheers in general have fallen off, is there a reason for this from the cheerleaders?

No student section culture. Can't expect much out of kids these days

Nice— we've found our next axe to grind. I was worried after the marketing department fell off the radar.

Not sure if teal was intended here, but other student sections do have regular chants and cheers and it adds to the atmosphere. Just saw tweets today of Pitt and Dayton student sections today that looked like a ton of fun. Not sure why MU doesn't do that. Not sure if it is something the cheerleaders should necessarily be doing, or just leaders in the student section. Anyone know if MU actually has an organization that coordinates or leads the student section? I know other schools do.

I'm talking about a student organization. We may very well have one; I was genuinely asking. Galway's original post, and my comment, were not intended to be critical of the student section. They show up and seem into the games. I don't think it is a "get off my lawn" worthy comment to ask about coordinated chants and cheers. Watching games on tv they are definitely noticeable and look like fun when some schools have them. The Thunderstruck start to the game is also fun to see in person and on television. Doesn't seem overly critical to think if would be cool to have more of that and inquire.

Coordinated cheers are something we don't do.

If the kids thought it would be fun, they would organize it.

That said, if you are worried about a bad TV look, then be worried about the fat, old, sweater vest crowd pained because their bursitis is acting up if they have to stand more than seven seconds waiting for MU to score at the beginning of the game.

My cousin had business in South Bend last week, so he decided to attend the UNC at ND game. He sent a pic well after the game started and the place looked half empty. He said the few students that did show up were lethargic, and the alums/ older fans seemed to be almost napping 😴.

Meanwhile, Marquette is packing the house to SRO for lowly DePaul, with a relatively energetic crowd, given the opponent.  Life is good.

One thing I've wanted for years now is the "I believe that we will win" chant but instead say "warriors come out to play" like the movie. It's the same amount of syllables. Wish I'd thought of it while I was still in school.

When I was a student during the Buzz era, we would have some "superfan" seniors who would organize chants among themselves. There would be a game early in the season where the student section (mostly underclassmen if I'm being honest) were asked to show up early to a game. Then the superfans would teach them some new chants they wanted to try for the year. The more routine cheers we would just learn by going to the games and following the lead of older students.

7+ years of mediocre/bad teams later, it's no wonder why the chants died. If you can go all 4 years without having a whole lot to be excited about, you're not going to participate in cheers, and you definitely aren't going to teach them to underclassmen. Winning cures all.

Fan since I could comprehend + current student here... its the lack of organization

Sure there are students there only to get pictures and stuff but people are generally loud, engaged and following the game

There's not really a "student pep club" or anything that gets everyone on the same page for chants

I would be up for one especially if it was not attached to the university, more of an underground type thing as YaBlueIt experienced during the Buzz era

I'm pretty sure the "superfans" had some sort of affiliation with Marquette Athletics, a few of them did recordings for the jumbotron. Those in the class of '13 might remember.

They need to bring Bill Scholl Larry Williams back so he can send a mass email to the student body telling them not to do the You Suck chant. I've never seen the student section louder or more synchronized than when they did that chant the very next game... while pointing directly at his box seats.

When I was a student at MU I wrote a letter to Mike Deane about the lack of Midnight Madness.  He followed up with a 3 page hand written letter explaining why and an invitation to his office to discuss it further.  5 months later we hosted a 2pm Madness in the Old Gym and created the Spirit Committee which became SAB (Student Athletic Board).  If you want change, be the change.  If you want to be official...reach out to Shaka, Barb Kelleher or Mike Broeker.   Or keep it underground, get to the games early, come up with a QR code for students to see what's the chant etc for that game.

I was around that time and think it was a small group of passionate people that drove it. Do students have to wait outside long for seats? I remember needing to be there an hour or so early for most Big East games to get lower bowl.

Also, I'm guessing the two separate student sections makes it more difficult to coordinate cheers.

Lastly, I think a lot of it was hype of the Cameron Crazies. I feel our generation probably watched more ESPN and the Cameron Crazies were always on. The jumping and yelling on defense was something they were known for.

I think it's a different era, but with a winning team, they have been pretty loud. Just not coordinated. Which is fine. Still making FF a tough place to play.

Assemble a small group that knows some cheers/chants or is willing to put a few  together and teach them.

Request a meeting space on campus (at the union or wherever) and use social media to get the date/time out to come and learn. Those who come can then teach others until it spreads.  Could even make fun Tik Toks demonstrating them as well.

Any of the sweater vesters who refuse to wear anything that says "Golden Eagles" on it want to get the Golden State Warriors "WAAAARIOOOOORS" chant going?  That's pretty bada$$ when Steph and Klay are rolling and you hear that chant blaring throughout the stadium.

Ive been at every game this year. The student section tickets sold out quickly this past summer. There is a secondary market for student tickets. The student section has been loud and engaged all year. I agree that the students are into the games and yell at the appropriate times during the game.
True, there are not organized cheers, but next year I expect even more excitement.

Thanks for posting this. I have made several references on scoop as to how "Shakamania" (as it was called) took over not just VCU but the entire city of Richmond. The excitement was contagious, and it started with the students and that band. The media and the public bought into it. The crowd at VCU seemed to want to top what they had done in the previous game.

I have to admit that when Shaka was talking to Marquette the first time around, I did not tell my Richmond friends that I was a Marquette alumnus. Marquette was temporarily a swear word in Richmond. People were really pissed at MU.

They need to bring Bill Scholl Larry Williams back so he can send a mass email to the student body telling them not to do the You Suck chant. I've never seen the student section louder or more synchronized than when they did that chant the very next game... while pointing directly at his box seats.

That was a fun one. And the last one =(

Providence lost to Xavier tonight, for the second time this year.

So they cannot join MU in beating every BE team at least once this year.

Only Xavier can if they win at Butler this weekend (recall that Butler won at Xavier a few weeks ago).

Talk to the mods, it was a mistake and they don't allow the deletion of posts.
