Title: Clingan Empire (lost to the Shaka Smart Enterprise)
Post by: tower912 on January 11, 2023, 08:10:00 PM
1.  7'2.  Freshman.  Quicker than Edey.
Please go pro.
2.  Sean Jones.  5'10. Freshman.  Quicker than most.  Good work, young man.
3.   Lego set defense for UConn.  So many blocks.  Vs Pillsbury defense for MU.  Love the turnovers.
4.  I really appreciate how Shaka's teams fight back.   I appreciate even more how he gets his freshmen to play without fear.
5.  In praise of Oso.  He can compete with Big East bigs.   In another year, Ben Gold will be fine.
6.  Second half adjustments.   We are coming to expect them
7.  With their length, that 1-3-1 could be lethal for UConn.
8.  The kind of game you want from two ranked teams in January.    A lot of fun
9.  Free throws in the last minute matta. From Oso and Stevie!
10.  MU fought.  MU won.  Joy.  Pure.  Unadulterated.

This team is fun.

It's also great to have numerous guys who hunt shots. Gotta have guys who wanna shoot to have a good offense. Then you have the two playmakers to keep the ball moving.

Marquette is basically 1-3 in Big East play since they aren't beating UCONN (can't guard Hopkins, you definitely can't guard Sanogo/Clingan).

Seton Hall is bad, but they are good enough to beat Marquette and make it hurt. Gotta avoid a loss on Tuesday.  Might make the trip to Milwaukee for that one.

Just wish Shaka would've played the walk ons and saved the squad's legs in a game we could not win.

UConn is in a rough part of their schedule.  Three rough road games.   In all 3 games, it looked to me like when they focused on getting the ball inside, they did well.   When the guards went iso, they did poorly.   I am grateful they did not feed Clingan every time down.

Fun to read UConn board complaining that Shaka outcoached Hurley and Marquette executed better down the stretch  :)

We frequently talk adjustments at halftime.  Usually about the defense. Rarely do we talk about how many points MU scores in the second half.

Yeah UConn has only lost road games to the three teams above them in conference. It is absolutely conceivable that they go through the rest of the BE with only one or two more.

Absolutely pleased to be wrong. Unreal this team.

Clingan was a load. Hurly was dumb and tried to go back to Sanogo to often.

Shaka just outcoached him. Stevie was a menace on D(as their board mentioned). Guards still win college games and ours were much better.

Yep..and Sean Jones had a similar impact.  Chase in his limited action also pushed the action out.  I believe the word out of the scrimmages against Mizzou and Loyola was:  "We couldn't get past your guards."  Our on ball D is one of the advantages Shaka knows we can press.

Agreed...was a great win...UCONN came out shooting well from 3 in the 1st half and then went ice cold in the 2nd.  I think they are a good team with room to grow.

I don't get too excited about dunks...Oso's alley-oop was one of the better ones I've seen at MU in a long time.

According to the 3man weave guys on youtube today, Shaka was 15-5 at MU so far as a underdog against the spread.

They all 3 used that as a reason for why while they leaned Uconn in the game slightly they were staying away from the bet.

Well, its 16-5 now if they were correct.

I thought Stevie would guard Hawkins and OMax would guard Jackson. Love the call to put Stevie on Newton and OMax on Hawkins. Hawkins did jack all night and there's no way UConn could keep up with our offense without. Couple that with bullying Sanogo into 5 turnovers in 19 minutes....great coaching performance and execution by the team

Just hope that the Clingon uses his cloaking device and disappears. We had no answer for that giant. Captain Shakirk did a nice job tonight  but next time we play them, somebody must blast a photon torpedo up the guys butt to take him out. Or maybe he could be distracted by Mudds women. At any rate Captain Shakirk utilized the Korbonite menauver satisfactorily.

JediWarrior mentioned in the SOTG thread the "bizarre but effective inbound play when they pressed after traditional methods failed in previous games" that Shaka called near the end of the game. The first time led to Oso being fouled (a flagrant?). Then, MU later set it up to run again, and I noticed the baseline ref telling the four non-Kolek players that they needed to start in-bounds. Anyone know the rules well enough to explain why it was ok (or how they got away with it) once, but not a second time?

Wasn't the first after a made basket, and the second after UConn airballed a three?  Different rules for different out of bounds sets; can't run the baseline, can't have other players out of bounds, etc.

Ah, that would explain it, if that's the case. Certainly on a dead-ball in-bound a player can't move his feet or he'd be called for traveling. I assume that would also include if he passed the ball to another out of bounds player who would then throw it in bounds (which is what I initially thought the plan would be).

But, that first time must've come after a whistle and so not in the true 'live ball' sense, as all five guys wouldn't have moved into the out of bounds area at the baseline just after a shot was made. I don't recall what happened just before that play started. (Still, even if it happened after a whistle, perhaps it is considered a different type of in-bounds play than, say, a dead ball after a foul or turnover.)

The football line of scrimmage formation for inbounding balls was pretty cool.

Bingo. And by placing all players out of bounds after a basket, any quick grab foul before an inbounds is an intentional.

1.  7'2.  Freshman.  Quicker than Edey.
Please go pro.
2.  Sean Jones.  5'10. Freshman.  Quicker than most.  Good work, young man.
3.   Lego set defense for UConn.  So many blocks.  Vs Pillsbury defense for MU.  Love the turnovers.
4.  I really appreciate how Shaka's teams fight back.   I appreciate even more how he gets his freshmen to play without fear.
5.  In praise of Oso.  He can compete with Big East bigs.   In another year, Ben Gold will be fine.
6.  Second half adjustments.   We are coming to expect them
7.  With their length, that 1-3-1 could be lethal for UConn.
8.  The kind of game you want from two ranked teams in January.    A lot of fun
9.  Free throws in the last minute matta. From Oso and Stevie!
10.  MU fought.  MU won.  Joy.  Pure.  Unadulterated.

Nothing to disagree with, loved it!  Someone needs to drop a few bonus checks in the mail for the MUBB-PAC Social Teams and also a few bonus dollars to MU admin for pulling the trigger and hiring Shaka, never expected this quick of a turnaround BUT Love it!

...If Adama had his A game, we could have had two guys with 20 at the center position......

Mostly (not entirely) complimentary to MU players. Beyond calling out Oso's talent Hurley called Kolek the best QB in the college game...Kam very crafty with the dribble...

My only quibble with the "If Adama had his A game..." comment is that it mitigates the MU swarming, stripping and trapping that forced Sanogo into five turnovers and held him to 10 points.

Just want to throw this out there too really quick because I hadn't really seen it mentioned anywhere, but Oso Ighodaro appeared to cramp up in his hamstrings late.  I'm certain a lot of guys would have come out of the game and tried to tend to that, but Oso realized his importance and pushed through it and finished that game for the team.  Pretty incredible to push through leg cramps late.

I guess Hurley did not get the memo that his team had zero chance to lose to Marquette this year, hey?  Our record was 1-3 after the Providence game because we just weren't beating UCONN this year.

Meanwhile Hurley's shaking in his boots.

It'd be a flagrant 1. Which includes the old definition of intentional foul.

There simply aren't enough adjectives to describe how good Stevie is on defense.

He has the 2nd best offensive rating in the Big East during league play.  He has the best turnover rate and is 4th in steal %. This kid is bonkers good. If he stays four years, he'll leave one of the best guards in the modern era of Marquette basketball. That's a Rico lock

So wait... you're saying that Dan Hurley, whose dad was a legendary high school coach in Jersey City, who himself played point guard in the Big East, and who coached himself up from high school, to Wagner, to Rhode Island, to UConn isn't actually "terrified" of Marquette and Oso???

The same poster who thinks he's terrified of MU is the same poster who said MU had a 1-3 record after opening 1-1 because there was just no chance this team was beating UCONN, so consider us 1-3.
