Obviously this is a tough one. Clearly American bread is dead last. But where do we slot Injera? My contention is there's nothing you can really compare it to worldwide.
Naan. There is no other answer.

Naan is outstanding. There's also a wonderful Moroccan bread and a plethora of good Arabian flatbreads.

Sourdough bread isn't originally American. It's been around forever. Perhaps cornbread started here? Southern biscuits? I have no idea

Their lack of versatility limits their overall ceiling imo.

I'm not discounting the greatness of a good biscuit at all. The fragility of the biscuit concerns me if we're going to have an honest and comprehensive discussion. Many would go with the classic baguette #1, but I think I would lean more towards a folding bread in the Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, or Indian mold. The Sopapilla however may claim a special category and some immunity of sorts. Like I said it's extremely, extremely. difficult. What's the consensus top 10?
Biscuits and gravy? Texas toast? Pre sliced bread? Please guy.
Best bread in the world is the greenback, the dollar, the American buck. God bless America.

Excellent choice.. Versatility needs to be considered here. Chapati and many Rotis for example have more versatility than Naan. I think we're also discounting a number of South American offerings. That cheese ball bread thing in Brazil is superb. Then of course there are breads specifically designed for their cuisine. I can't think of a better example than injera. We also cannot discount tortillas and arepas.. Or even the perfect bagel. I do think you have clearly defined the best bread that began in the present day United Stares. Sopapillas I believe started somewhere in South America.
Crumpets suck btw.
Uhhhh French bread is easily the best. What sort of nonsense thread is this?

I assumed you'd have recommended the injera from Buraka.
Also, I have had the momos at Little Tibet. All of their food is fantastic, and the jhol beef momos are the best.

Yes, I've enjoyed the injera at Buraka.
I never got to go to Little Tibet but have now heard from several sources that it's excellent. :(
There is a little Thai joint a bit off the beaten path on the Eastside. I think it's Thai Sala or Sala Thai? Excellent Massamun Curry there. :)
It's Sala Thai on Fair Oaks Ave.
Dave's Killer or Angelic
Festival (Jamaican fried dumplings) are also fantastic. Probably my favorite if I had to choose

You can still go to LT, it's very much still open!
Sala Thai is good, as is Sa-Bai Thong... but I prefer Hot N Spicy... located in the back of the Viet Hoa market on Monona drive, the 'kitchen' is smaller than my dorm room at OD in 2000. Be careful with the spice level if you're not initiated to thai spicy levels.

I have to agree. Elminating/reducing grains has made a difference. However, some sliced roast beef with raw horseradish on freedom bread is awesome.
I'm not going to claim best bread in the world status, but I made homemade flour tortillas last night for the first time and was really happy how they turned out. I need some practice making circles, but other than that they were better than tortillas I can get in stores around here.

If you are ever in Denver, eat at Tocabe. Get the shredded bison stuffed frybread, with an order of Bison Chops (comes with a side of frybread, and jelly). Amazing.

I recently heard how good homemade tortillas can be. They said buy a cheap tortilla press. What recipe did you use or what pre-made mix did you use?
As for bread, a real French baguette makes for a great sandwich; some soft cheese, fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. So simple and so so good. I'm normally a no salt, no sweetener, lightly processed, whole grain bread eater, but make an exception for a solid French baguette - when in France.
I'm not into the Italian baguettes, to brittle and crust is too thick. Definitely can't make an edible sandwich using one.

I used this recipe (https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/flour-tortillas/); it was pretty easy. I was a little surprised by the solid coconut oil, but it worked really well. I'd be curious to try lard sometime just to see how they turn out. I didn't use a tortilla press...just rolled them out on the counter with a rolling pin. Also, the person who wrote the recipe likes them thick. I doubled the recipe and ended up with probably nearly four dozen tortillas. I was making them thinner and smaller as I got better at it. I think if you want smaller taco-sized tortillas you could probably get 18-24 from a single batch. You could probably get a dozen 8" tortillas from a batch.
