It's a unique building built during a time where MU wasn't committed to a single look. Some would say it's ugly but I like to think of it like our basketball program...our biggest tradition is we have no tradition.
I still cannot get over how ugly the Business School is. I was told early on to brace myself for something hideou bc 10-15 million was slashed from the budget and it affected design more than anything. Wow was that right, it is just plain brutal and does nothing to enhance one end of campus that should act as a welcome sign for east bound traffic.

Yeah, I am a little shocked by how bland it is. Maybe they didn't want so much glass facing the south, but I would have thought they would have made that a little more impressive.

Missing the hanging curve would have been turning down the many millions of dollars donated that came with selecting that spot.
You're not wrong that the rec center would be better placed there but when you write that big of a check you get to make certain demands

Humanities and social sciences buildings are easy to maintain (just offices and classrooms), but difficult to replace (lack of donor interest, not much enrollment upside). It's that way on a lot of college campuses.

I get what you're saying but to me the hanging curve was the vacant land in a primetime spot. MU has done a lot of greats thing recently, moving the Jes Res has done wonders for the mall between AMU & Schroeder, the mall between Cobeen & Tower is great too as is the general beautification of Wisconsin Ave. But this is really bad. If they just copied Zilber Hall they would have been much better.

Well...I'll just say there is a little more to the story than that.
I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some of the buildings this guy says should be torn down IMO are not so bad and some of the buildings he say are great just might look hideous to some architect 60 years from now.

Loved reading this dgies! One of my brothers met his wife at Marquette. Being the first member of my family to know her well created a close relationship that is still there today. I remember my father asking me about her since my parents knew very little about her at first.
For quite a while, it looked like my Marquette girlfriend would become Mrs. Scoop, but it simply was not meant to be.
You guys complain too much. You should have see the campus in '65. The new Business building looks fine to me. Lalumiere Hall is so late 60s architecture it is iconic of the time, no different than Johnston or Marquette Hall (the old Science Building when I attended) was in their day and I can remember the bells sitting on the sidewalk when they were installing the carillon in the tower of Marquette hall. I can remember Joan of Arc chapel, Weir Chemistry and Lalumiere Hall being built.

The bricked facade screams 60s. Thin windows, first floor overhang, and cement window covers.
It's brutalist style with a modern twist and it doesn't 'work'. That hunk of property is probably the most traveled spot on campus and this was the decision. What a belly flop.
If you scroll down on the main page, you can see what the backside of the building that faces the lawn looks like, and it doesn't seem much better.

It looks like there was a design in mind that, at one point, might attempt echo the Calatrava on the lakefront... the use of the white metal and windows. And that would have been beautiful... Though, I'm not a fan of rectangles. Instead they seemingly plopped a couple of shipping containers made of brick on top. And that thing will sit there for decades as a giant eyesore.
Roger. I find architecture to be a lot like sportscasters. On the extreme edges of the distribution I notice, but otherwise it just kinda blends in. Give me Ueck in his prime riffing on stealing tubas from marching bands during the World Series, and I get something out of the call. Give me the average C Fox squad for an NFL game and I don't even notice them at all. Give me some dumpster fire like Dakitch and it detracts from the game.
Most buildings are just... buildings to me. This one seems broadly whatever, fine I suppose? I like glass, I like brick, seems fine. I thought Eckstein was good, I like the Calatrava, but this side of hating Lalumire, I tend not be get too excited by buildings one way or the other, I guess.
Not sure I know what the business school was going for. Todays style is glass curtain wall construction, perhaps with white framing to honor the Caltravva or the 1st Wisconsin Center. None of that is evident in the B School.
Looks like someone was trying to blend in and got nowhere.

Personally, I think it's a shame to be spending $60 mil on this.
I don't care for Lalumiere, it's a sore thumb.
Eckstein Hall is damn good. It matches many of the other buildings that were built of that time, and the North East corner has those neat little arches in the windows that should remind you of the stained glass windows or the front doors of Gesu. The little details are great.
The Calatrava is a world class building and there is a reason MKE includes it in every bit of marketing it can.
Also, the business school looks worse in person*.
* it is not done yet but it's really just landscaping at this point.

Would there be much value in it being connected to MU's Union? At least when I was there, it wasn't much of a destination and was used to get out of the cold on the walk back to my apartment more than anything.
Interesting to hear the design budget was significantly reduced due to fundraising. I know there was a bit of a reputation of Lovell announcing plans a little early and having to walk things back when the money wouldn't come. I thought with recent announcements, that wasn't as much of an issue.

Fall of 1989 I was introduced to my future wife in the elevator of Schroeder heading to a weekend breakfast at Cobeen. We were being set up for an SYR to Comedy Sportz. Just celebrated our 28th anniversary a few weeks ago.
I met my future wife at a party at my Campus Town apartment. She was living in McCormick. This September is 25 years since that day we met.
