Title: New Coach: New fight song?
Post by: muwarrior69 on March 26, 2021, 09:53:15 PM
Now that we have a new coach and the University is updating our seal I think its time for an updated fight song.

As a Warrior I always felt we could do better than Ring out Ahoya. To be honest it is kind of lame next to the ND victory march or On Wisconsin.

Just my take.

I'm PRAYING, f-ing BEGGING, that this will be the end of Where the Streets Have No Name.  It was great when it started and for years after, but it's just a buzzkill now and hyped up nobody.  Going from booming hip hop into a quiet build into a song that the team has no emotion for was anticlimactic

Disagree. I was sitting next to some Cincinnati fans at the Bradley Center way back in our GreatMidwest days, and they have a really cool fight song, yet they thought RingOutAhoya was very unique and cool.

For an intro song, I would like to see something like Biggie's version of Eminence Front.

This I once was trying to learn the MU fight song on the bagpipes by hearing it and accidentally played the ND fight song. Remarkably similar

When I was in law school at U of I in the 70's the local radio station played a medley of the beginning of every Big Ten fight song on Saturday mornings during football seasons. For many years I remembered them, but honestly the only decent one in there was Michigan's.
Ring out Ahoya is just fine.

Hey, you're on to something here! Screw the pep band schtick. Have about 40 pipers at the home games playing the fight song or anything else for that matter.  Marquette will adjust to the pipers playing but the visiting teams will never come back out onto the court for the 2nd half. We will have the nations' longest home win streak. Who cares if it comes from forfeits?

Actually, I like bagpipes but I couldn't resist. This was too easy.

Love Ring Out Ahoya.

The talk of intro song has me excited to see then fan reception for that first game. Our coach is going to get loudly cheered instead of booed this year. I really think student engagement is going to go up next year. I think there will be a buzz around Shaka.

Agreed.  The only issue is that the band will probably lose members due to budget cuts so you'll have 5-10 people playing it while there should be 30 to get the hype factor at an acceptable level.

One change that should be made is to bring back the annual basketball media guide! No need for a print version anymore; digital is all that's needed. Really miss those books & all the information & historical records. I think they disappeared the year/season Wojo took over.

If budget cuts and apathy make the band untenable then Scholl should play a mix of the Butthole Surfers, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks, the Damned, Rancid, Dead Kennedy's, Iggy Pop, and the Clash.

Marquette needs to rediscover its renegade roots. A return to forever, if you will.

Wojo likely canned the Media Guide as it was a painful reminder of the greatness that was once Marquette Basketball.

The taint of mediocrity which characterized his tenure was palpable. Giving people access to facts, rather than the ceaseless blather which defined his moments at the podium, would have exposed him for the charlatan he is.

Wojo. Goddam that man.

Imagine how depressing it is to play your heart out, game after game, without any mention of payment or profit. Nothing is more crushing to the human spirit than to have the jack booted heel of socialist exploitation resting on your neck. Band members should unite; they have nothing to lose but their chains.

How bout that jack booted heel of socialist exploitation resting on the necks of those who play their heart out, game after game, without any mention of payment or profits..............on the court? Someone should suggest to them they should unite and explain to them how it's really socialist exploitation keeping them from getting paid.

The name "Marquette University" is kind of played out too. We should change that as well.

To honor a man who subjugated a proud people is morally improper. The trustees of our alma mater should right this wrong with immediate effect.

I suggest we rename our once great University, "The Josiah Powless University." What better way to wash away the outrage of White Privilege and the Exploitation of People of Color than to pay tribute to a genuine Marquette Warrior.

140 years of celebrating a shameful chapter in world history is far too long.

Sadly, the current system of unpaid servitude that is intercollegiate athletics is nothing more than old white men keeping young people down and in their place. I liken the plight of college athletes to the horror of being an oarsman on a Roman Galley.

Imagine the outcry had Coach McDermott instead said, "You just need to stay shackled to the oar lest you taste the lash!" There is no surviving such an insensitive comment.

Thought we were trying to highlight the easy road of the students - my bad. If we're going woke we should consider the UTIP 'Progressives', 'Accepters', or 'Damn Youths'. Mascots could be 'AOC', dude with long hair (man bun for rivalry games), and sweater vest in that order.

'Comrades' may mistake communism with socialism with democratic socialism, it's easy to conflate those so no worries. If we're trying to highlight the socialism aspect we should consider the UTIP 'White-Throated Dippers'. Which keeps us with a bird mascot and is the national bird of Norway (which honestly couldn't be any funnier for this)

The UTIP Progressives has a lyrical ring to it. It rolls off the tongue with the sugary promise of unbridled entitlement combined with absolutely no demand for accountability or responsibility. Let's face it: Utopian Dreams don't come cheap and who better to foot the bill than the privileged Caucasian elites whose ill gotten gains were accumulated through the vulgar sledgehammer of capital.

I do, however, love the image of an Acceptor mascot: Birkenstocks and ragg wool socks, hemp vest over a collarless linen shirt woven by Palestinian refugees who fled the savagery of Zionist aggression, braided pit hair, man (him/he/his) bun, a well-thumbed copy of Maya Angelou's collected works in his/him/he cross body fiber satchel crafted by Bolivian campesinos who are locked in a Herculean struggle against Latifundista tyranny, and an ever present six string for consecrating a vigil or protest with the healing chords of Kumbaya.

Dropping the well enjoyed back and forth schtick:
a) i've not read the whole Powless history but it looks awesome and I will as soon as the rest of the naginiF's complete their nightly ritual. thanks for sharing.
b) i'm willing to bank that the vast majority MU grads in the modern age did not pay their own way through school. Scholarships, parents, grandparents, etc. paid at least a portion. Pretending that isn't a form of entitlement is not being honest.
c) I assume the mocking of pronouns is just part of the banter that was established and that'w totally cool/in line. However note that some here use the mocking of pronouns in a defamatory manner
