I was convinced Wojo was returning. Proved wrong. The commitment to Marquette Basketball is solidified. The number of posts the last week has to be a record. Excitement is back!!!!
Greet job Bill and the team!!!

Heartfelt thank you is in order. Win or lose, they did the right thing for the program and university. Job well done.

It feels great to have some positive buzz around the program now. Well done!
Agreed. Scholl has made some very, very good hires in his time at Marquette.
Thank you Bill and Dr. Lovell:
I remember listening to Marquette games on my radio in my bedroom when Don Kojis and Walt Mangham starred on the team. I fell in love with Marquette basketball then and worked hard to go there. Although my Dad took me to see Wilt Chamberlain play as a rookie with the Philadelphia Warriors that year, it was the Marquette Warriors that I dreamt about. Thank you for restoring the magic by hiring Coach Shaka. Ring out ahoya! I am proud to be a Marquette alumnus and excited to watch the next basketball team.
Crazy to think Wojo was our coach 1 week ago today. What a turnaround

Great post. I really am excited about the buzz this hire has created. You have been a fan a long time and I hope Shaka's full court press brings back some memories. A great day to be a Warrior fan.

That really is mind–boggling. And not only was he our coach, but most (including some vocal Nojos) thought he was here for another year.
It has been quite a week.
+1
I admit the past few years have left me wondering about the scope of the administration's commitment. Glad it is still there.
Agreed, thank you!
I also owe them an apology for questioning their commitment. Glad I was wrong!
Today is a great day for Marquette Nation!
Sorry, but I can't congratulate anyone until Shaka has had success. You put us in this mess to begin with.....now get us out.
Also.... You missed out on Wisconsin Native Nate Oats

I'm sure they'd appreciate a few shekels and/or ticket renewals aligned with this news. I just completed a small donation to get on record that I appreciate the move.

Lovell was a couple weeks on the job and Scholl was working at Ball State when Wojo was hired.

You have no clue how college athletics work. Extensions are formalities granted in order to show recruits the coach is going to be there.

The extension was just the cost of doing business. Didn't turn out to be a problem in the least.

At that point, Wojo hadn't shown anything....
Not to mention, I had called for his firing around that time. It's amazing how the enablers try to justify things.
It's really cute that anyone thinks Scholl or Lovell read MUScoop.

I'm not enabling anything. Giving a coach an extension at that point was fine and turned out not to be an obstacle in the least when a change needed to be made. And despite your statement of wanting him fired, there was ZERO chance that he was going to be fired then. None.
You want to keep living in the past go ahead. Everyone else is going to move on. I know your incessant bitching is really all you can do here, so maybe Shaka will do something to let you do what you are good at someday.

What's really cute is watching a bunch of Pro Wojoers dance around when being held accountable. The enabling, group horde, mentality on here is hilarious. I honestly will miss the lame Kenpom stats cited in support of Wojo.

I like positive energy. MUScoop should brand some crystals and dream catchers for sale at the Fiserv giftshop and the Golden Eagle Shoppe.

Yeah, the only downside is that Shaka's contract did not insist we change our mascot back to warriors.

They can by Gold at this moment. Just get the full court press ready to rumble.

I was one of the most vocal Nojo-ers on here, but now that we've made an exciting hire, I think it's time to forgive and forget all the slurping that went on here the past few years, and just move forward.
Scholl and Lovell did the right thing at the right time, and as MU82 mentioned in another thread, they showed no loyalty to Wojo despite his being here seven years. When it was absolutely, 100% clear to even the most staunch Wojo supporters that he wasn't getting the job done, they showed his sorry ass the door. Took a dump on his forehead first and showed his sorry ass the door. They behaved like big time college athletics leadership should, and for that, we should all breath a sigh of relief and be thankful. And I'll stand by that even if Shaka doesn't work out.

Should have done it sooner. Maybe they waited for the right time so they could make the right hire. If Wojo was a placeholder until "the right guy" hit the market then it's a damn fine move. I'm definitely curious to know if they ever offered anyone else first via backchannel. Regardless, I'm ok with the hire. Shaka is better, but he's still missing "it". Hopefully, he can find that missing factor while at MU.
Big hire - big commitment - while his Texas time was at an end this is NOT some dime a dozen coach - this is a p6 .660 winning percentage final four guy with local ties - and a no doubt upgrade - great work
I'm curious if anyone can spill who is actually the reason this came together. Is it a small group or an individual?
Ahhh..finally a change. Like Stretch....I remember back in the 60's , I grew up hunched over the radio at night trying to pick up the MU games, whenever the Milw radio channel could get thru to Depere. Normally, it was full of static and faded in and out. But, I enjoyed the excitement throughout the years,... however the past few have been most disappointing. It certainly was time to restore Marquette basketball...shucks now that I am in 80's, probably just a few more years of enjoyment.
Thanks, Bill, and Dr Lovell.
Official statement from President Lovell:
Welcome Home, Shaka Smart
Dear Marquette alumni, parents and friends,
I am writing to make sure you have heard the exciting news that earlier today, we officially announced our new head men's basketball coach, Shaka Smart. I am so excited for Shaka to lead our celebrated men's basketball program, and I look forward to supporting him for many successful seasons as a Golden Eagle. I wanted to write you personally to share some additional details about this historic hire for our program.
Shaka, 43, brings to us 12 years of experience as a head coach at The University of Texas (2015-2021) and Virginia Commonwealth University (2009-2015). In 12 seasons as a head coach, Shaka guided the two programs to a total of eight NCAA Tournament appearances. Those trips were highlighted by a run from the First Four to the Final Four by VCU in 2011.
You can find the official news release at gomarquette.com.
Shaka will be the first person of color to lead our program, and is a true role model for our student-athletes. I've had several conversations with Shaka in the past few days and I know he will be a results-focused coach and recruiter, and also a strong advocate for our Catholic, Jesuit mission. What has impressed me most is that he is interested in being a leader beyond basketball. Shaka is a Wisconsin native and both he and his wife Maya want to make a positive impact on our Marquette and Milwaukee communities. We are excited to welcome Shaka, Maya and their daughter Zora to the Marquette family.
Shaka has proven himself to be an experienced, talented coach who can perform at the highest level of men's collegiate basketball, and I have no doubt he will lead our student-athletes to success on and off the court.
The search team considered and is thankful for the thoughtful input from a number of coaches, former players and those close to college basketball. I want to thank Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Scholl and his staff for leading the search and recruiting such a respected coach and leader.
I know you will share my enthusiasm as we look ahead to our next chapter of men's basketball under the leadership of Head Coach Shaka Smart.
Sincerely,
President Lovell's Signature
Dr. Michael R. Lovell
President, Marquette University
