Title: Moving on
Post by: vogue65 on December 30, 2020, 07:04:08 AM
I got it, its all about our nomadic culture.
It has nothing to do with March, championships, or win loss records.
How many times have you moved in the past, lets say, 20 years?
We just crave change, new car, new home, new job, new phone and new coach.
Same goes for the coaches, new school, town, league or fan base.
I have family and friends who just move on all the time, and most of them are retired.
New Jersey to Georgia, to Florida, to North Carolina.  New Jersey to Costa Rica, to Arizona.  New Jersey to South Carolina then back to New Jersey.
Sound familiar?
That sounds a little "strange", so we need rationalizations.
We need a new coach to be happy, ha.
No, we are really just bored and want change.
We want the excitment of a search committee , the thrill of the chase, the blood of the kill, the crunching of numbers, the dreams of a successful future.
Thats what this is all about, it really has nothing to do with WOJO.

Same wife since 1973. Marquette has had 8 coaches since then.

Some things are meant to be permanent, others are not.

Recognizing, accepting and enjoying the difference is important.

None of this, of course, is true. No one was calling for Buzz's head in year 7, except maybe Ners. Nor Crean, despite consecutive NITs. But this is more about your narrative of everything is fine & nothing matters. So...Arby's?

QuoteCelebrate the Temporary by Clyde Reid

Celebrate the temporary
Don't wait until tomorrow
Live today
Celebrate the simple things
Enjoy the butterfly
Embrace the snow
Run with the ocean
Delight in the trees
Or a single lonely flower
Go barefoot in the wet grass
Don't wait
Until all the problems are solved
Or all the bills are paid
You will wait forever
Eternity will come and go
And you
Will still be waiting
Live in the now
With all its problems and its agonies
With its joy
And its pain
Celebrate your pain
Your despair
Your anger
It means you're alive
Look closer
Breathe deeper
Stand taller
Stop grieving the past
There is joy and beauty
Today
It is temporary
Here now and gone
So celebrate it
While you can
Celebrate the temporary

Change.

This is a pretty tough sell at a relatively conservative, largely homogeneous school that in 2020, still has a three fourths student population from just two states.

You do realize that there are many people here and out there that have not lived your life? Yes? Probably more so than what general statistics would say.

I haven't lived and spent time in a lot of places because I was bored. There are a lot of great places snd people out there. I don't need any rationalizations. I am not energized by frequent coaching changes.

I'd just like to have a more consistently  successful men's basketball program. And, because I follow other men's and women"s sports, I would like to see the same for some of those sports as well.

Is it still that way?  It was that way 50 years ago.  We keep trying to expand the pool and the Big East must help.  When I did high school recruiting, in N.J., it was a tough sell.

Probably much more homogeneous if not including the foreign students.

I never thought I would say this. I moved on to the NBA from college basketball. This occurred because my brother twisted my arm to join his fantasy league. Now I watch the NBA every night rooting for my players and rooting against my opponents players. I could not even waste my time watching the end of the Badger loss to Ohio St., which I would of thoroughly enjoyed in the past. I am even beginning to wonder if I will even watch the MU/Georgetown game.

River Falls and Superior are about 50% Minnesota students. Stout and Eau Claire have a fair amount too. This is due to tuition reciprocity between the two states.

Whitewater and Platteville have about 15-20 %of its students from Illinois.

People are sick of the excuses and seeing the same issues reoccur year over year. That's what it is for me, pretty simple. He's not producing at the rate we had been in the past, he's not living up to our expectations/standard, and we haven't seen much growth from him as a coach (esp in game)

As the great physicist Albert Einstein once said - "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

He literally tried to go to the Bucks. And if he had moved to the NBA, and succeeded or failed with the Bucks, he likely would have moved to another franchise/job and had the intinerate coach's life.  His ties to Milwaukee post coaching were like why former college football or basketball stars often reside in their college towns if a very successful pro career doesn't work out, their name and reputation there provides the best opportunities for revenue and employment.

I have no doubt McGuire loved Milwaukee and didn't regret putting roots down there, but to claim that it was cause he didn't possess a toxic lust for change you're ascribing to many here and never wished to cast his gaze elsewhere is a stretch to fit a narrative.

There are of course a variety of ways to be successful.

You could have a Villanova, whose coach stays 19 seasons and counting.

You could have a Xavier, and have success with several coaches going 9, 7, 5, and 9 seasons in succession.

You can be Butler and go 1, 6, 6, 1, 3 seasons with new coaches.

You can be Creighton and have two coaches in the past 26 seasons.

Just win, be successful, and if/when a coach leaves, replace them with someone who will win. And when you aren't successful, replace the coach with someone else who will be more successful.

There is no one way to do it.

Gotta believe LaCrosse has a decent percentage from MN too. Lots of kids from here in Rochester look at it as an alternative to schools like Winona or Mankato.

Doesn't stability feel good?
Change for change sake is the life of a loser.
For some the grass is always greener somewhere else.
When I look at leaders, Admirals, Generals, Colonels I find them all more alike than different.   You've seen or worked for one, you have seen them all.
Probably not unlike college basketball coaches.
Different around the edges, but alike at the core.
Coach speak is similar to General speak or Wall Street speak, or priest speak.
You've heard one you've heard them all.

O.K., what about the rest of my post?
You know, coach speak, you've seen one you've seen them all?
You've seen one Gunny Sergeant you've seen them all?

For a University that has demonstrated a long term track record of picking problematic coaches, I'd say give it up.   Let's try something different like loyalty, patience, and support.

I know lots of guys who are on their third wife and have yet to find whatever it is they are looking for.

You are right, it's not change for change sake, there is always a case to be made.

Enjoy the game tonight, win or lose Georgetown has an identity, a clear hisory, a leniage, good for them.  Georgetown knows who Georgetown is and that has taken time.  Players come and players go, but the tradition lives on.

At some places the coaches come and the coaches go and there never is a real tradition. Unless turnover isv a tradition.

Marquette has been like the guy who buys lottery tickets waiting for his ship to come in.  Lightening in a bottle, ha.  As I said, the Holy Grale.

"For a University that has demonstrated a long term track record of picking problematic coaches, I'd say give it up"

Really? How many truly "bad hires" have there been?  Dukiet and Deane come to mind. Who else?

I wouldn't even say Deane was THAT bad. I think Majerus wasn't a great hire. That would have been a good time for a fresh start.

No, change looking for the Holy Grale, good luck.

Leadership is overrated.
Important, part of an organization, but not the only part.

Marquette has a long term track record of picking problematic coaches?  What?  To quote a character from the movie Grandma's Boy, "Your beef is wrong, bro."  I mean, that character said "beef" in reference to a smelly fart, but since your post was the equivalent of that, I think we're all on the same page.

Buzz recruited some kids who got into trouble, and he was run off for it.  Other than that, who are these "problematic coaches" you're referring to?  O'Neill liked to use foul language, Deane enjoyed having a taste after games.  If we want to hire a coach who doesn't drink or swear, we may as well promote the team chaplain.

I'm not thrilled with the Wojo era, but I don't think I'd trade places with Georgetown right now. They haven't done much the last decade and I don't think Ewing is the answer.

You friends with our President? He did that and stumbled into the White House, maybe that's what he was looking for?

Yes, every coach had his "issue" that is my point.

How about Rick Majerus or coach Raymonds?
Was Tom Crean a lucky pick?  Or was it a player?
How is Indiana doing with the coaching merry-go-round?
We seem sometimes to pick winners who we don't recognize as winners.

It is hard to ferret out the real underlining reason for the attitude shown by so many here who attack our current coach.  I think it a systemic problem.

Al knew that Marquette was not a Blue Chipper.  We aspire to that status and I think we have all the pieces in place to reach it.

For example, Villanova was not created in a day, Rollie Massimino notwithstanding.  Like Georgetown they have lineage.

It takes time to build a coach just like it takes time to build a sustainable program.
Turnover has a very steep price.

Throwing money at the problem is not the answer.

Hay, can the team chaplin coach?

Ha, we are not allowed to talk politics here it gets quickly nasty.
However, he is my neighbor in New Jersey, about 3 miles away.
I never met him, we don't travel in the same circles.

If I lived in Jersey, I'd be looking to move in as well.

Yeah, it did kinda suck waking from a beach nap and surfing the afternoon through.

Really? Sure seems like we were there when he was coaching. Perennial Top 10 in the 70's. Not many were better.

I think a good question for the board would be, how many other places outside of Illinois and Wisconsin have you lived?

5 (Washington [state], Minnesota, Michigan, Utah, and Texas). Spent 11 (non-consecutive) years in Wisconsin, 0 in Illinois, over 20 in other states.

Since I asked the question...

In the U.S., New York, Virginia, Florida, California, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, Georgia, Arizona, in addition to Illinois and Wisconsin.

I haven't spent time in every state, but the total is up there a bit.

Deane wasn't great but he wasn't a bad hire either. NIT finals (lost on a very weak foul call), 2 NCAA tournaments, CUSA tourney title, and another NIT (just missed the NIT final four in 1998) in five years. I'm not saying he shouldn't have been fired (trajectory wasn't looking good) but he wasn't a "bad hire."

My understanding is the NIT finals year a big disappointment coming off a sweet 16 with senior Tony Miller and two future NBA players on the team.

maybe, others would know better since I was freshman that year. We lost three multi-year starters from the Sweet 16 team and replaced them with two relatively inexperienced sophomores (Pieper and Crawford) and Amal. I don't think many could have foreseen Crawford as a NBA player at that time. Hutch didn't really come on until later in the season either.

Yeah I think everyone knew that a let down was inevitable.  An NIT sized letdown?  Maybe not, but the run in the NIT that year was fun.

we started out well and then went through a rough patch in the middle of the season (save for a nationally televised win at Cincy) before finishing hot and building momentum for 95-96. At one point we had 7 of 8 games on the road.
