The diet version of Markus. The 5’10 undersized scoring who could light it up. His 3 from the corner against Louisville is one of my sharpest Marquette memories as a kid

Deane handcuffed him as aFreshman until he let him loose and the rest is history.  That and health issues as aSenior or that young man goes from an all time great to a serious discussion of being on MUs Mt. Rushmore and in the rafters. One of the all time great Warriors and one of the most beloved for certain

I know he had the sickle cell, but didn't he also hurt his ankle as a senior? That team started 10-0 and fell off a cliff, and I seem to remember him being injured.

I think it was more than just the sickness and injury.  There was a growing disconnect.  Al McGuire gave Mike some pretty incredible advice for dealing with Hutch.

"You need him a hell of a lot more than he needs you"

Al would be the king in any era.

Hutch took his time coming back from the ankle injury because of that disconnect.  Hutch also thought Deane was a racist.

Not that Hutch was innocent in the issues between him and Deane. Academic eligibility was always a worry with Hutch. Managers had to wait outside of classrooms to make sure Hutch was there and Dan Theiss was often responsible for marching Hutch to his classes.

He's had a tough go of it after college. The car accident that ended his draft prospects, his son dying young. I'm glad he finally came back and finished his degree.

Hutch did some other things, too, that drove Deane and staff crazy.  I’ll never forget some of the craziness because we lived it every day in the office.  Happy for him that he completed his degree.  I understand he and Deane were friendly at the 100th, hopefully the thoughts Hutch had at the time about him were a by product of immaturity and don’t carry through to today.

So you are saying the rift was all Hutch's fault?  That's a load of BS. Deane was an A-hole to Hutch and many players. I was told he took it to a personal level and crossed a few boundaries.

We are the same person.

I will say it this way, I thought he was immature at the time...many people that age are.  The staff was demanding of certain things and in my opinion he felt he was being ganged up on.  Ultimately they wanted what was best for him and the program.  Staying eligible was important for them as coaches, also for him as a player.  That meant going to class, laying off some stuff, etc.

The staff pushed that on everyone, regardless of seniority, race, ability, position, etc.  Do I feel the staff could have approached things different...yes.  Plenty of fault on both sides, but sometimes young people don’t get it until a decade or two later?

Have kids?  I’m sure you know what I am talking about or maybe if not yours, perhaps you have seen it with other kids.  I know from my own experiences as a kid that I went back years later to thank my parents when I was super pissed at them in the moment for forcing me to do certain things or depriving me of stuff that could hurt me.

A racist coach?  Don’t tell Lens, that will be a crushing blow.

Maybe you should take it up with that coach’s boss at the time since other people there, especially subordinates would have no impact or even be privy to behaviors you allege.

Interesting if your accusations are true that said coach was embraced and invited back for the 100th celebration, while one former coach decided he was too busy.

do you have proof that Deane was a racist? He sure seemed to recruit a decent number of African-American kids for a racist.

And tell me about the donor thing. The word back on campus was he had an affair with the wife of a BOT member which was one of the things that led to his dismissal. Who knows if that was true or not...

As has been witnessed and reported here by the Meat Heads, allegedly Deane-O took a bite out of a young, unsuspecting female lawyer alum’s posterior at Turners, among other things. Which is a sexual assault.

Yet, all of this is just a “disposable sock” to those in the AD at the time I hear. Just turn a blind eye when you are employed in the situation but it is a Scoop travesty when others do the same.

He’s gone through a lot.  A few people reached out to me via PM’s the last two weeks to explain some of it once he left...I was in the AD for most of his career, but did not know the scale of his issues after leaving MU...this article does a good job of bringing most to light.

Hutch admits his immaturity in the article, able to laugh it off now...that is a big win for him.  He definitely had demons at MU and beyond.

Would be great to see him continue to progress in his career.  Glad to see Wojo hard on him to finish his degree.  The right kind of culture to push.

Incredible story of persistence.  Overlapped with Aaron while he was at MU, shared a few mutual friends.  He was always a friendly guy, never walked around with the ego that many in his position (BMOC), would.

Time to retire #12 for his basketball accomplishments and how he's persevered through a life of many difficult moments.

Hutchins was a great player, but I don’t think he should have his number retired.  That said, I’d be all for a pregame ceremony with lights dimmed and a highlight reel played where he’s honored at half court and comes out to a standing ovation.  Could be a cool thing to do at National Marquette Day or before the Seton Hall game to get people amped.

The only numbers that haven’t been but probably should be retired are #34 for Travis and #10 for Tony Miller. Hutch was an awesome player (his NIT performance and the team’s accomplishments that March kept me at MU after I’d decided to transfer) but he’s not at the level of number retirement.

Appreciate your Billy Hoyle response about Travis and Tony.  Both were great Warriors.  But to discount Hutch, like this as in "no," pretty crapty.

Silent Verbal had a great idea.  Perhaps retiring his number was a reach.  However,  Hutch would be an exception where you look at the body of on court work, and off court and possibly make an exception.  What Hutch has had to endure in his life is brutal..and the fact he's weathered all of that and come out the other side is a great achievement in and of itself.

Sorry, but Cheeks and I are two different people.  And I also don’t recall Travis playing for Golden State.

Nobody is discounting Hutch’s career. I was lucky with him being in my class (entering, not actual classes, he didn’t go)  and seeing him all four years but you don’t retire a number because someone overcame hardships, many self-inflicted, to graduate 21 years after he should have. And his antics senior year cost the team a possible NCAA tourney appearance.
