Is anyone paying attention to the guy who is just crushing it on Jeopardy? I don't generally watch, but I heard them talking about it on the radio, so I've tuned in the last couple of days.
The guy is a sports bettor from Vegas. In just 10 days, he's amassed just under $700,000. Before he started on the show, the highest single-day total ever was $77,000. This guy has broken that four times in 10 shows, including $131,000 yesterday (and also $110k, $106k and $89k). Hell, he had $71,000 yesterday before even making his final wager (the competition had around $5,000 each). He's a machine.
Yes, I know...totally geeky to be watching (much less posting about) Jeopardy!
Those two other contestants yesterday looked like they wanted out about halfway through the second round. The middle one looked pissed because he was answering everything.

That really would suck to spend your entire adult life hoping to get on Jeopardy, and then when you get your chance, you're playing against a f'ing machine.

Dude is fascinating. Not only is he a great player, he's clearly applying game theory and +EV (very common fundamentals for poker players and gamblers), which shockingly nobody really has before. Its the difference between him and someone like Ken Jennings who was just a great trivia mind.
670 had him on the other day. Definitely kind of an awkward dude, but it is fascinating. Hard to see who can stop him short of a weird board he just doesn't connect on. If he starts getting into 20-30 win totals, much less approaching Ken Jennings, they might start sweating cause their potential loss is substantial.

Why is their potential loss substantial?
The guy is ridiculous. He is a perfect storm of a Jeopardy player. He is extremely knowledgeable on a wide range of topics. He is a gambler and bets large sums when he hits the Double Jeopardys. But I think the biggest thing is that he has the buzzer timing down. I would guess about 25-30% of the questions are ones that more than 90% of Jeopardy contestants know, and he gets the lion's share of those. You can't buzz in until a millisecond after Alex finishes reading the question. If you buzz early there is a delay before you can buzz in again. He seems to have that timing down perfectly.

Ken Jennings wont $2.5MM over 74 episodes. Holzhauer has $700K thorough 10 episodes. At this rate, he'd pass Jennings in the mid 30s and would be over $5MM if he approached his streak, and thats assuming he's not hitting these $100-110K rounds regularly.
Jeopardy is fine, Trebek makes like $10MM a year, so its not like he'll bankrupt the show, but they will be paying out WAY more money than usual.

And I'm sure whomever owns Jeopardy has taken the appropriate steps to mitigate any losses. Like a stop loss insurance policy or something similar.

Beat me to it. Can't imagine why no one has ever done this before. How many times have we seen a guy get the daily double on an $800 dollar question and "risk" only $1000? Almost every contestant is worried about losing money rather than going for it to make money.

There are a lot of really smart things that he's doing. First of all, by hitting the high value clues first, he's getting to those before his competitors are getting comfortable in the game which gives him an immediate advantage. Also, by hitting those first he's building a substantial bankroll before he hits the daily double -- which allows him to bet a large amount. The other day he was at $20k or so when the went to the first commercial break.
And the smartest thing he's doing: answering all the questions correctly. That's probably his best strategic move. ;) I heard on the radio this morning that he was 40 for 40 last night.
It's also interesting that sometimes when he has a seemingly insurmountable lead in double jeopardy, he seems to take a break for a while. I haven't paid that close of attention, but I wonder if it corresponds to when one of the other players is in the negatives. I wonder if he's giving them a chance to get back above zero to compete for second place.

I read an interview with him and he was asked about the strangest bet he'd made (or something like that). He said that a casino let him bet $75,000 that Ken Griffey, Jr. would get more than 75% of the HoF ballots. Who in the hell took that bet? I can only guess that it was some now-bankrupt casino.
Article on The Ringer today goes into great detail on what is his greatest advantage: beating his opponents to the buzzer. Jeopardy is not like scholastic bowl etc where you can buzz in at any point--bc they want the viewers to hear the entire question, you are not allowed to buzz in until Alex finishes the Q, and a producer then triggers a light. If you go early, you cannot hit again for .25 seconds. He trained on quick reaction time etc. (and then of course all of what you guys note above can kick in - get questions right, big bets early, control the board, DD...)

The whole dynamic of positioning yourself well for Final Jeopardy is why you usually don't see big bets. If you are losing, making a big bet that risks you going underneath the 50% threshold where you can't win is a losing play.
OTOH, the only time it makes sense to make big bets when you leading, is when you are WAY out in front. Like he usually is.
So the reason he can afford to make big bets is because he is generally way out in front. There have been times late in the game where he makes small bets to make sure he stays at least double to the second place person to ensure a win.

What's smart is that he's not guessing. Ringing in a guess is what gets a lot of contestants in trouble. Only ring in when you are reasonably sure you know the answer - or at least can figure it out in the few seconds you have.
It also helps if you don't have knowledge gaps (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRdGHqh2RsM).

I had a friend who was on the show and he said the same thing. Most of the contestants know the majority of answers, but it is all about the timing on the buzzer.

Friday's show was interesting. He seemed "off his game" and the other two contestants were hanging around. At the end of first round, he only had around $5k or so, and the others were fairly close.
Of course, he finished with $80k plus. Even with what seemed like an "off" game he managed to post a score higher than any other player has ever gotten. Crazy.

After "only" 22 episodes, James now has all of the top 10 single-day totals in Jeopardy history.
His total winnings of $1,691,008 makes his daily average $76,864. This is just $136 below the previous single-day record. Amazing.
He did win by just $18 on Monday. Aside from that one, he continues to blow people away.
Next week is the Teachers Tournament, so he'll be off for a week.

And, got the first daily double on the first pick of the game. I'd guess he often got somewhere in the neighborhood of $20-$25k on daily doubles. He got a total of $1k last night. That, coupled with two strong opponents, was his downfall.
I know that a lot of people questioned his final wager, but it was perfect from a strategic point of view. I know some think he threw the game, but I'm not convinced. I'm 100% positive, of course. But, if he threw it, he did so by not buzzing in during the game, not on his final wager. His final wager was dead on to maximize his chance of winning. It just also happened to be too little, too late.

This is why I think he threw the game. Admittedly I was getting ready to go play some basketball when I started watching and when it was still close as I was getting ready to leave I just fast forwarded to near the end of Double Jeopardy so maybe the girl figured it out, but you could see at times that she'd be hitting the buzzer multiple times. James normally absolutely kills people when they do that. He seemed to just be sitting around letting the other two get their chances to answer.
James was adamant early on that he only buzzed in when he knew the answers. Perhaps the categories weren't to his liking. Or maybe he just wanted to be done and not unseat Jennings. Either way he was fun to watch.

Very early on in his run you could easily deduce the kid of "perfect storm" that would need to occur for him to lose. Aside from the obvious (i.e., a capable opponent) the biggest key would be getting shut out of the daily doubles.

I thought Ken Jennings or Dr. Oz were the best so far, with the producer third. Dr. Oz is a non-starter because of his fuzzy history with the truth with regards to medicine on some TV shows, or so I am told. Rodgers is fine, but his diction is not the best. Dr. Oz is a non-starter because of his fuzzy history with the truth with regards to medicine on some TV shows, or so I am told. Rodgers is fine, but his diction is not the best. I'm surprised, they've all done pretty well. I always figured Brad Rutter would have been the best guy to take over.
I've thought all the guest hosts have all been fine. Each has had their own unique presentation that works. I think Ken Jennings and the Producer Mike Richards have been my favorite so far.
Who else is still on the guest host list besides Anderson Cooper?

Neither my neighbor nor I like Rodgers as host.
I actually liked the Jeopardy producer who filled in a few weeks ago.
I find that the people raving over Rodgers are either Packers/Rodgers fans, or others in sports related media. He's not bad, and had a few good moments, but I didn't see the "oh my god hes a natural" star gleam that everyone in his collective camp was expressing.
Ken Jennings is a natural fit IMO
So far I'm in the Mike Richards or Ken Jennings camp. Looking forward to seeing Anderson Cooper.
I think Mike Richards was the most polished of the hosts. He seemed like a natural that has done this for years.

The mono tone is about him trying to be true to the values of Jeopardy and not making it about himself. So when he does change inflection it is a genuinely funny moment.

He did way better than I expected given that he is a trivia geek and not a professional presenter, but he was a little dry. He would never be in the running if he was just a guy off the street.
I just listened to the podcast. It does sound like they prefer someone who will do this full-time. It's not a requirement, but sounds like a strong preference.

Mayim Bialik is the host for the special episodes and primetime episodes. I wonder if she'd do the daily show or if she got the part she wanted.
Total failure. Should have went with a former champion (Trebek wanted Jennings) which would have been the easy thing to do, the sympathetic thing to do, and above all the wise thing to do.

Sony seems not to care that Richards is on tape with his sexist and racist mumblings so I don't think a few tweets from a former Champion would be much of a PR obstacle.
Richards is an ambition monster and this will not end well. He's been an a$shole for over a decade, did all he could to bury certain guest hosts, and lied relentlessly about why he guest hosted the show in the beginning.
Those of us who enjoyed Jeopardy will have to accept that it is dead and gone along with Trebek. It will be something entirely different.
Amazing how badly they've done with this.

I was rooting for LeVar Burton until he actually hosted the show. He was slow (didn't get to all the questions a few times, I hate that) stumbled over words, took extra time to respond if the contestant was right, etc. I thought he was one of the worst, if not the worst, of the guest hosts.
You don't need a MENSA member to host Jeopardy!, just a polished game show host. Those types aren't around like they used to be. Richards was among the best of hose who did it. I thought the best as far as just running he show were Ken Jennings, Mike Richards, David Faber, Buzzy Cohen and Dr. Oz (who is a non-starter). I still don't know why they didn't give Brad Rutter a try unless he wasn't interested.

More was to come out. Sony had to pull the plug and frankly surprised they let him announce it Friday morning instead of the typical Friday afternoon bad news dump.
It's a good development as this was always to end badly and better to do it quickly but, boy, do they have a tempest on their hands with their next choice.

The whole thing was a no-brainer and they still screwed it up. I'm guessing they'll just let the offended flakes on Twitter make the decision.
What was a no-brainer? Richards? I mean he was fine. But so were many others.
The problem is they should have never set up the guest host gigs as some sort of try out. They should have had their person picked out ahead of time, and made it clear that the guest hosts were guest hosts.
The producer's machiavellian scheming blowing up in his face is worth a laugh though. Tried to move from good job to the big chair and ended up on the breadline. Classic whoopsiedoops.

A Hollywood reporter this morning said after Alex died Mike Richards inserted himself into everything, planned to name himself the replacement from the beginning, and was awful behind the scenes. There is a lot more bad stuff not yet public. His 2 week stint as host did not show his real self. Mike purposely withheld guest hosts because he was afraid they would make him look bad and I supposedly the big 3 contestants Ken J, Jeopardy James and Brad R are not fans of Mike.

What are the odds Richards had those Jennings tweets in his back pocket for when he needed them?
When I initially heard of Richards getting the job and this process, I had assumed he was this long-time producer. Maybe it was a narrative that he crafted but didn't realize he's only been around Jeopardy a short time.

Opinion: I'm Matt Amodio. How I win at 'Jeopardy!' and why I love CT
Matt Amodio
Sep. 17, 2021
https://www.ctinsider.com/opinion/article/Opinion-I-m-Matt-Amodio-How-I-win-at-16464978.php
"What's Matt Amodio"? Hi! I'm a Ph.D. student at Yale in computer science, currently living out my dream on "Jeopardy!" I've followed "Jeopardy!" since before I can remember, with my parents watching the show every day and me in the background.
Trivia has always mattered to me, because in a broader sense knowledge matters to me. I had instilled in me a love of learning from my parents, and I have carried that with me everywhere I go. I get a lot of joy out of learning things, any things, about the world. I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to go on a show that values that quality and rewards.
It's been fun sharing that love of knowledge with people I've met along the way — for example, having the pleasure of getting to meet Connecticut's Gov. Ned Lamont a few weeks ago. He is extremely nice and energetic, and I was pleasantly surprised that he was so knowledgeable about history, which we talked a lot about. He told me Connecticut is rooting for me, which means a lot to me.
I'm proud to represent Connecticut! I've had such a great time at Yale, and I love New Haven. It's such a lively place with a lot of interesting stuff going on at all times, and the friends I've made here are great. Oh, and the pizza is pretty darn good, too. (I know it's always a hot topic, but I'll take Pepe's any time!)
I've always been a trivia enthusiast, and so the way I acquire knowledge is by reading a lot and doing so with the idea of "How can this become a trivia question?" in the back of my head at all times. I read Wikipedia articles for entertainment, starting from one article and then linking to a bunch of interesting topics I see in that article, which leads me to a bunch of others, and so on until I realize it's time to go to bed. My favorite topics are generally things such as history, politics and geography, so I knew to succeed at the show I'd have to strengthen a weaker area of mine: pop culture!
I have spent time watching newer TV and movies and listening to newer music. It's been easy to convince myself that this is actually productive, not a waste of my time, because it's all focused on improving myself for the show! I've also been pleasantly surprised that I genuinely like some of the things I've exposed myself to, which is a great lesson in expanding one's horizons and being open to new things.
I think Amodio is better at trivia than Holzhauer was but I think Holzhauer was a better Jeopardy player.
I thin Amodio is feeding off of a lot of bad competition. But I like the guy, and if Blossom gets the full time gig, I'm cool with that.
