Title: F!@£ Nova Chant
Post by: Avenue Commons on February 09, 2019, 06:56:33 PM
Completely and totally classless. And in no way original or clever at all. Just trash. I was extraordinarily disappointed and embarrassed by the chant.

And by the way, Villanova, its players, and its coach, are extraordinary. To be in the Big East with them as they put up TWO National Championships is a privilege. History in the making. Today Nova came into a tough environment and almost pulled out a W with clutch plays, sharp shooting, and hustle. If anything earns an F Bomb it's F'ing RESPECT.

How dare you.

A shameful part of a great win. Apologies to Villanova. And for those of you who say I'm uptight or whatever, know that I object as much to your lack of originality and lack of humor as I do your lack of class. The chant is lame.

We can do better. We Are Marquette. Live up to it. Be The Difference. AMDG.

People have complained about this for as long as I can possibly remember. I simply don't care anymore. It's a naughty word said by drunk college kids. Who cares. Every school does something "classes" at some point. I just dont care anymore.

Well said. I can still remember the stupid 'digger beats his wife' chants of the late 80s. We are better than that. All regrettable.

True story: the students were chanting this in the line into Fiserv forum and my 6year old nephew who is a huge MU fan joined in not knowing the true meaning.  It was sort of humorous but disturbing at the same time.   This is why it's wrong.

If the guy in the row behind you repeatedly yells the F bomb as happened at the game, as a dad with a kid at the game I for sure told him to stop as did others in my row. Kids think it's normal when a big game. What are we teaching them?

Take the "class" part out of it and you still have the fact that the chant is unimaginative and unoriginal. It's lame.

Anyone who defends its is also lame as can be and a classless tool. That's the best you can do? Sad. Grow up. Honestly.

Do better. Be better.

I have no problem with bad language and curse all the time, but doing it loudly in a public setting is extremely rude.

As for the chant, I thought it was a bad look, but it didn't surprise me, either.  College kids and all.

You're having some trouble distinguishing between a chant, an adult apparently screaming profanities throughout the entire game, and a fan dropping some f-bombs during a close game.  All are very different things.

Whether or not I have children is irrelevant.  I don't but i do have godchildren so please let's set up some time for you to sit behind us at a game.

A society dies when more and more people say "I don't care" about small and big things over and over. Will our society die because Vanderbilt Blue Man Group doesn't care if he helps kids learn to be profane....no. But a million little cuts over time and we bleed to death.

You might not be able to help letting an F fly during the heat of the game but at least care a little that little kids around you hear it.

Why not teach our kids rare profanity (self control) is a sign of maturity.

I'm actually not having trouble distinguishing. All of the above happened at the game today. A fan was thrown out two rows behind me for being so drunk he was repeatedly screaming F$ck at the top of his lungs.

Overall the student section is uninspired.  No profanity cheers heard at the Xavier game.  Do we want to lower ourselves to the Rodent standard?   If that was one of many chants, heard once, okay but that was all they had.  I have always said that people who drop the F bomb as their only adjective sound unintelligent and crude

I don't get the vitriol on both sides here.

College kids are going to chant dumb profanities or inappropriate things. It ain't the first time and it certainly wont be the last. Does it make it any better? No, but it happens, no need to get bent out of shape. Calling people classless and saying things like how dare you doesn't help your point get across.

Posting on a message board which no students read/post isn't going to do anything. Send an email to the admin, they'll send out an email to the student body, nothing will change rinse and repeat.

On the other side, no need to get all rogue here VBMG. I see where you're coming from, as I'm sure every single person on this board who sat in the student section had at least one profanity laden tirade in their years but can't exactly argue with parents who don't want to expose their children to such things.

Personally, I don't imagine hearing people swear around my future children will bother me one iota, but then again I pretty much grew up in a gym so I could be the exception to the rule.

If you would yell "f*ck you" to your mother, then you and I see the world differently and we can agree to disagree.

If you would not, then don't defend dropping f-bombs in public around children.

It's not just a matter of class. It's a matter of respect; respect for your fellow human beings. Especially those that are young.

Saying you don't care, is everything wrong with our society. It shows a complete and utter selfish disregard for anyone else. Sadly, that's a plague that curses humanity. The loss of respect and empathy for others is why we see such bitter animosity.

All that said, I find public f-bombs in front of my children a reality and great teaching point for my children. Sometimes the best way to teach what principles to strive for is to point out those you don't want to emulate and to explain why such lack of respect is something that one should strive to keep out of his or her life. So, thank you for that, I guess.

College students chanting "F*ck Nova" is not clever.  It's also not unusual or worth getting worked up over.

An over-served adult screaming "f*ck" in whatever format at the top of his lungs throughout an entire game, regardless of if there are children or not around, is an idiot.

A fan that lets some f-bombs fly in the heat of the moment?  To be expected as far as I'm concerned.

You not being able to distinguish between those scenarios?

I feel like there's some irony in this one. I get that people slip, but when you're in a family friendly, public environment, it's certainly not too much to ask for attendees to have basic self-control, is it?

I get where you're coming from but to me it's a massive overreaction.  Comparing cursing at a sporting event to the overall lack of empathy in society today is a stretch.

If I notice kids around me at an event I'll try not to curse at all.  However, it happens and that's just the reality of taking kids to a sporting event, especially a big game.

I assume you've never let a naughty word slip out in front of your kids?

I agree with this completely.  Well said.   Today was definitely a teaching point.  It is what it is.   Unfortunately my son was more preoccupied with the drunk idiot behind us getting thrown out then the game for the entire first half . It is what it is.
What I take issue with is anyone who defends it.   I.e. tiny and VBBG.  Was it one of you guys who got thrown out?

Again, I'm not defending the guy behind you that was tossed.  That's an extreme example.  Now if you were up in arms about some scattered profanity during the game that's another issue to me.  Perhaps it was all semantics here and I could have done a better job of communicating that.

Like I said in the original post, independent of the classless words/acts, it's a totally unoriginal chant. That's the best you can do?

I guess if that's the best you can do you're going to defend it. I suppose it makes sense that unoriginal people will defend unoriginal ideas. But that's sad. You do you, I guess.

Wow, what a thread. Both sides are going a bit extreme IMO. I will say this, the chant has been said during at least the last three Nova games and at least the last two Bucky games. If the chant happens max twice a year, I don't think the higher ups will get too upset about it.  If it becomes more and more frequent, those higher ups will get it to stop.  I would be surprised if the chant happens against this season, and I would be surprised if anyone remembers this (IMO ridiculous) thread in a weeks time.

I agree completely and do the same about teaching my kids.  But I appreciate those kids more than you.  Not only for providing a teaching moment, but for not posing any competitive threat to my children in the future.

I'm not a fan of shouting F-bombs at games, whether kids are around or not.  But my 6 year old has been exposed to far worse than the F word by watching local news.  We just talk about right and wrong.

Again, I'd rather hear them chant something else, but I loved the student section.  As for what the girls wear, if you prefer fact chicks in sweats you can go watch plenty of other teams.  I'll take it.

Simultaneously true:

MU vs DePaul in the early '80's. One whole side of the Arena is filled with Diocesan priests. A veritable sea of black with white speckles.

A bum call by the refs and the student section erupts in a full-throated, PBR-fueled chant of, "Bull Sh1t! Bull Sh!t!"

The thousands of Diocesan priests, far from being outraged, joined the students in letting the refs know they had failed the game.

It's sport. It's entertainment. It's supposed to be fun.

It's classless and uncool in hindsite. But all the middle aged parents need to step down from their high horse and remember that when they drunkenly stumbled to the games they likely cheered similar things that they wouldn't want said in front of kids. I don't care for it, but I know I chanted f*ck the (insert team here) many many times. Admit you're holding 18-22yr olds at a higher standard than you likely lived up to simply because you have a kid with you.

That said, bring back the "hey you suck" Chant.

I'm not a fan because I think it's a bit lazy, but I have less issue with the students chanting F You Nova than I did the guy who started a cursing tirade in the middle of our section over a call. The occasional expletive I get, but it was long, loud, and drew the attention of everyone nearby. This wasn't an 18-22 year old, this was someone that looked to be in his 30s.

I don't think hoping for a little restraint is too much to ask. The students are gonna student, whatever, but once you've graduated from that section into the adult sections, you should at least put some effort into acting like you belong there.

This I agree with. I'll say I'd let the young alumni section be rowdy as well but as a whole it's fairly distasteful to be shouting expletives like crazy outside of those two areas. There's no mob-mentality rational or anything it's just pure anger issues and embarrassing to be the crazy cursing shouting guy in a rather low key section.

But I standby my point that I think many on this thread are holding young adults to a higher standard that they held themselves to because their kids are involved now and the expectation of many of the new parents I know is that the world bends to their needs when their kids are involved.

You (unsurprisingly) completely disprove your position.  The F word used to be the vilest, while the N word was common. Societal pressure has made the N word unacceptable, while societal acceptance has made the F word more appropriate.  Kind of proves the point some on here are making.

I'm not a saint and have dropped my share of f bombs in public.  As I get older, I get more embarrassed because it is rude and it does offend people, and it's just not necessary, so why do it?

The question any MU fan should ask themselves is... would they rather be viewed more in line with a Badger fan or a Villanova fan?

I think that question speaks for itself, and anyone who is fine with this chant is likely no better than a UW-Madison fan already anyway.   But hey, every program has "those people."   ::)

My 10-year-old has been my wingman for 5 MU games this year and last.

Some of them in the student section.

We do a high five for every MU point. 2 for 2s. 3 on 3s.

We also play a game called "count the bad decisions." Winner gets a Kit Kat.

He sees someone packing a chew and he gives me a nod. Yup one point for him.

He sees someone throw up during the game. Yup point for him.

He hears "eff you Nova" he looks at me and gets a point.

Winner gets a kit kat in the ride home.

If you bring your kid to a game, you gotta know what you're gonna see. Don't cover little Johnnie's ears, let him observe and then put what he sees in some context.

As for the eff you, I just tell him it's lazy. There are a ton of ways to get under an opponent's skin. Yelling eff you doesn't work cause it says more about you than the other guy.

My 10-year-old has been my wingman for 5 MU games this year and last.

That's an awesome idea.  A+ for you on your parenting skills.

Does "that guy is wearing a brown belt with black shoes" count?

This years version of "our student section is a disgrace because they did exactly the same thing as the school's student section were trying to say is classy" is the best one in a few years.

In an ironic twist those calling the student section unimaginative, unoriginal and repetitive are doing the exact same thing. News flash, we've had this exact conversation 5 times in the last 5 years. The original poster is the unimaginative one.

That said, bring back the "hey you suck" Chant.

Pleeeeeeeaase, that band director found some type of power for once in his life and he's going to hold onto it until he dies.

I honestly didn't hear the chant.  Maybe too many Spotted Cows and Bloody Mary's in the morning, or chatting it up with friends.  Oh well, 18-22 year olds do things that sometimes are cringe worthy.

It only happened 2-3 times, and fortunately, died out pretty quickly.

Highlight of the game was my wife's early trip to the restroom at the first half under-12 timeout. There was a student worshipping the porcelain goddess in the stall next to her rather loudly. I mean come on, at least hold your stomach until halftime.
This happened all the time in the upper deck part of the student section of the Bradley Center.  I will never understand to have my body that out of control.

Just as using the F word now is vile.  Again disproving your point.  Good thing you can laugh, I don't know how much else you have going for you.

Dude,  using the f word now is not in the same universe of vile as using the n word. One is a word that makes some people uncomfortable,  the other is a racial ephitat meant to lower an entire race of people to less than human status. It's a very poor comparison
