After the Xavier win, Marquette is officially tied for first in the Big East standings. While we have a loss and Nova does not, 7-1 and 6-0 are tied in the standings because of the two extra games played. I feel like this has to be the latest in the season we've been atop the league standings since 2013.
Huh? When is winning percentage not the decider of place? Not that it really matters at this point....

Yeah, these are not MLB standings. Nova is still first right now.

Standings all work the same. Go to the ESPN standings page. We're tied.
You mean these ESPN standings?
Hmmm, don't think so
Ha. Mine sorted by win percentage and I didn't even see the games behind column. Not sure if I proved my point or put my foot in my mouth
Loss column. Nova 0. MU 1. Nova in 1st.
First place or second place whatever...I'm happy with the 7-1 start. I seem to recall Brew took some heat for predicting a 15-3 finish. Right on pace but a lot of games left.
I'm more than willing to wait until we're really in first place after we beat Nova on NMD.

Nova is still listed first with a 1.000 winning %...... ;)
Yeah we're in 2nd but 0 games back.

Zero games back. Exactly right. We're tied for first, no matter what the nattering nabobs of negativity may say.
Doesn't really matter what place we're in until Wojo gets that 10 game conference win streak monkey off his back.

Why have modest expectations? Let's go for 17 straight ;)

No I'm saying we're in second place. Basketball goes based on winning percentage.
A week or 2 ago the Bucks were in first place but a half game back of the Raptors because they had the best winning percentage in the NBA but had played 3 fewer games played.
Marquette is 0 games back but is in second place.

For the time being, we're tied for first, but Villanova is ahead in the loss column. Their WP% will have them listed first, but a zero game difference is zero games. Because at the end of the season everyone plays the same number of games, so until you get there, a zero game difference is a tie.
This is truly a Scoop debate.
Gotta admit we're still looking at Nova's asses, Brew. Hope that's not true in 24 hrs.
Safe to say no one would have argued that we came into today a half game out of first.
We won, Nova didn't play, so we gained a half game.
Let's go to the source, the Big East Conference
We're in 2nd. This is silly. Winning Percentage determines standings. Games behind is meaningless when there are games in hand.

Yeah. This is where it is weird. We were a half game back going into today. We won.
I think everyone would also agree that if Nova loses tomorrow we'd be in first place by virtue of having 1 more win. So if that's the case, then we're tied right now.
But I go by winning percentage, so we're in 2nd.

You multiply them. Obviously. We are a 1/4 game out.
In 2 weeks, after wins over Butler, St. John's and Nova, we will actually be in first place ... and that's good enough for me. I'm a patient guy.
Look! Another pointless hill for brew to die on.
We're in 2nd.

Games back is not an official thing. It is an invention of newspapers to help make sense of the standings. We are in second place. Winning percentage is all that matters.

If Nova loses tomorrow they will be in second place because they will have the 2nd best winning percentage in the BE.
As of tonight they are in first place.
This debate is dumb & dangerous.
Did not realize that we've won 15 out of the last 16 games.. this is a special special team and I'm glad we finally get to see Wojo prove everyone wrong, including me.
Well...at least there's no more debate. We're back to #2.
.........or STILL in 2nd. ;)

Beat Butler, THEN we're Number One.
Thanks, St. John's!

Technically we are number one now since we are tied with Niva and beat them.
Aren't we a half game behind?
Nova 11-2
MU 10-2
We are most assuredly not currently #1.
Even if we beat Butler on Wednesday, there's a good chance we won't be #1 as Villanova is at Georgetown before our game tips, so a 'Nova win would put them at 12-2 while the best we could be that night is 11-2. If we win our next two, however, we will definitely be #1 (for at least a day).
I like to celebrate every step on the journey, but I'll really celebrate if we are the unquestioned #1 in the BEast at about 11:30 p.m. Eastern time on Feb. 27.

Ah crap. Didn't realize they had an extra win. Thought we were both 10-2.
But loss column and stuff.
At very least until the end of the Butler game....
