Like most (all?) Marquette fans I have never liked DG. Today, he was "Awesome with a capital A, baby". Excellent analysis, very complimentary and (like the play by play guy) said we'll always be the Warriors!
They clearly liked mu more than X. And did Doug say basketball porn?

I 100% agree with Lenny
He was great today.
Just threw up in my mouth.
He was excellent. First time all year I felt I was learning something from the color commentator.
Fox's use of close ups and camera angles annoys me to no end however.
Could've done with out some of the sound effects early. NSFW
But, yes he was good otherwise
I was pleasantly surprised, I liked his take about scraping with Wojo too
Today we got Gottlieb the basketball color man. He's excellent in that role. When he morphs into Doug Gottlieb the radio show host is when he sucks.
Rough start when he got distracted by the beer to open the game but it was a Marquette love fest after that. Also ripped on the officiating which was nice.

+1000
Which of the announcers said that the kid in the student section was wearing an old school Marquette uniform? How can they not know what are current unis look like?
He was very informative and very supportive of MU. Objective on the refs as well.
I've always liked Gottlieb. He can talk too much at times, but I think he's one of the few guys that goes out of his way to explain the game. I was happy to see he was on the game today, and I thought he did a great job. I liked the Gottlieb/Brenneman duo today.

They called it the '77 championship style' or 'old school style' jersey. Which isn't wrong.
Have always liked DG. Many dont like him for his whining, but his basketball analysis is great
When Doug was with CBS couple of year ago, this board liked his call on National Marquette Day of the Xavier at Marquette game on CBSSN. He calls a good game.
Most of the hate comes from his twitter shots at the Big East Conference in 2015 after Villanova lost to NC State.

+1 actually felt like he was adding to the understanding of Markus' game too.
I can't believe how much I enjoyed him today. Brennaman is a perfect match for him - he lets Gottlieb just be a guy watching basketball. If he just morphs into a weird, brotastic, Vegas insider kind of slimy version of Bill Walton, that would be a great career curveball for him that I didn't see coming.
I have been rough on him in the past. He clearly likes the way this team plays and was not shy about saying it.

Nah, my gripe came in 2013. "Miami by a sizeable margin," with an obviously smug look on his face. But yes, he was excellent today.

The "hate" comes from where Fox sets him up to give his Super Bowl prediction during the middle of the game.
Like DG dissecting the play to Joey, nice out of bounds play!
Like Gottlieb. He was only one to say Arizona choked against Illinois in the Final 8 in 2005.

It's easy to bitch about the officiating (especially when things are not going well). I usually don't go overboard with that, but today I was kind of stunned by how bad the zebras were, and was somewhat vocal about it with some colorful language. Such behavior on my part usually leads to marital discord, so I am grateful to Gottlieb for bailing me out today. My theory is that when even the announcers are critical, the reffing is bad. I would say that (at least) half of the fouls on Theo and Matt were poor calls. The makeup call on Sam was egregiously inept.
Can anyone point out a good place online to see who reffed where? So far the box scores I've seen do not list the officials.
Good call Lenny......Doug was really good today.
Pomeroy. Not sure if it's behind the pay wall or not.
In any case, Roger Ayers - 5th in 6 days, this week, Charlotte Monday, Pitt Tuesday, Fordham Wednesday, cuse Thursday, Cincy today.
Brent Hampton - 4th in 5 days, this week, Georgia Tech Tuesday, Rhode Island Wednesday, Southern Miss Thursday, Cincy today
Tim Clougherty - 3rd in 4 days, this week, UMass Wednesday, cuse Thursday, Cincy today.

Thanks, Eye.
I said at the beginning of the game in the game thread, DG blows. He changed my opinion of him after today. He was good.
Found a KenPom article fro 2 yrs. ago that said that Ayers was the best ref. Yikes!
YW Miles. Pomeroy's ref ratings are based on the team rankings of the games the individual official officiates. So a guy who does a Villanova - Marquette game this year gets more credit than a guy who does a Milwaukee - Green Bay game this year. Not based on any objective analysis of how the official does in the games he does.

My wife said early in the game today that the announcers seem really good like they know what they are talking about. Told her that Doug G. Was "spot on." He was a 100% better than Brian Anderson who doesn't know basketball and that's why he is awful as a play by play announcer. Hope we have more Doug G. Do more games.

Comparing the color guy to the play by play guy probably isn't the best comparison to make.

This. Well said, wades.
I said after the game that it was nice hearing Brennaman and Gotlieb today, thought they added to the broadcast.
The only time my wife and I got p-o'ed was when they kept talking about their spilled coffee while the game was going on and they completely missed a foul call, on Joey IIRC.

Tell that to Anderson who does more color talk than play by play announcing.
I thought the play by play guy was awful. And I could give a crap if you spill your coffee.
Quote of the game was when they were talking nfl playoffs and DG complimented the patriots saying "they went into kansas city and let the air out of the football, air out of the stadium"
Doug was into the game today. You could tell both were like "whew, these teams can shoot!" Great BE game, great win. Doug keeps it real
I've had issues with Doug in the past - mostly that he often seemed to be overly critical of MU. Maybe he didn't like TC or Burt but likes Wojo; maybe he just likes this group of guys; or maybe he is maturing enough to rein in his biases. Whatever it was, I thought he was outstanding today.
Once he stops ripping your team long enough to get you to want to listen, he really is awesome at dissecting the plays.

Yes, these are two very different jobs.
DG was good today. It's an example of why it is important to take situations individually for what they are.
At times, DG can either talk too much, too negatively, too bluntly, and/or too impulsively, including about topics in which he is not well versed. Delivery of message matters. Bill Raftery for example is always positive and encouarging for players who make mistakes, or play poorly, while still pointing out their mistakes. This is one of many reasons Raft comes across as more likable. DG doesn't have to be like that, just be yourself, but stick primarily to the game at hand, pointing things out and why in at least a neutral manner, that comes across that you are enjoying what you are doing.
DG did well muchof the time today.
DG was very good today. Like others, not a recent fan of his work.
My only criticism was on Joe's steal and subsequent poor pass to MH. DG blamed that pass on Joe's "lack of self confidence."
I thought was a bit lazy. Joe made a poor play, and DG was just itching to use his pre game notebook.
GAME NOTES:
Joe C. Lacking self confidence.
I, like, most of you here, liked DG yesterday on the call. He was funny, honest, insightful, and organic. However I have to say, and I think we should all be able to admit, a lot of that was because of how complimentary he was toward MU. We have to be honest that we enjoy hearing a 2 hour love fest for our team. I'm sure Xavier fans couldn't stand to hear the tongue bath we got. I'm not saying it was undeserved, but it makes me chuckle every time fans claim they want unbiased announcers/media. No, we want to hear them be fans of the team we like.
Nothing like showing "underage" drinking on national TV and the only one wearing a MU uniform.....
Got to love those fake ID's.....
I thought the line about Jesuit schools "serving" students on a Saturday afternoon was actually funny.....
My read......I actually think the kid was a graduate....and hanging out with his"Xavier" jail bait girl friend/previous hook-up.......A lot of that "cross-mingling" in Rome on those semesters.....
PS.....He called Marquette ....The Warriors going into one commercial.......

Not odd.....Just the way it is......
When is that last time you have seen them show a student in the stands at any game drinking.....
When do you see "one" MU student/alumni in the Xavier student section.....If a road trip....There would be more MU gear and people....So some kind of connection.....
And I know of at least 3 marriages out of Rome semesters where Xavier and MU have "co-mingled"
Or do we not share facilities with Xavier on Rome semesters any more????

So let me get this straight. You think the kid is a graduate from MU hanging out with his "jail bate" (not sure you know what that means but we'll go with it). But you think they're showing an underage kid drinking. So did this kid entered college at 15 years old or...? If he's a grad he's at least 22 years old. The drinking age is 21...
The fact of the matter is if the kid is a junior or senior he's more than likely over 21 years old and legally drinking. And there were something like 47 kids from Marquette High and DSHA that went to Xavier in this freshman class. Xavier is a very popular school for Milwaukee area high school graduates. I have 2 younger brothers that go there and an older sister that went there. Chances are the kid has friends who went to Xavier and he's visiting them for the game.
But maybe he's a 19 year old college graduate who's macking on some Xavier randos...
hes a bartender at Caffs according to Facebook
Just to add information into this very odd discussion....age of consent in Ohio is 16 (gross). So unless she was 15 or younger, she was not jailbait.
This thread has taken a rather disturbing and bizarre turn. :o

I wholeheartedly disagree. Chartouney had the ball and had space but didnt want the ball so he forced it to Markus who had defenders near him and he had to throw the ball behind Markus to have any hope of markus catching it n not the defenders. A more confident player attacks as he had a clear path foward, but hot potatoed it. Hot potatoing it defined as "i want nothing to do with this ball, u take it". Putting the receiver in an inferior position than the passer had the ball in, in a pure effort/panic to get rid of the ball. Thought joe c played well but that was a baaad moment.

Love the comparison. According to that description I might stick around haha.
The XU students were super passionate. Awesome atmosphere. I got there about an hour before-hand to snag those seats and up until about 20 til the tip I was getting chirped really hard which was totally expected and hilarious. Then a security guard came up and told them no swearing or middle fingers for PR's sake.
That turned out to be the end of my baptism by fire and then they were total class acts the entire rest of the game. Post-game they were shaking my hand and buying me a drink or two!
Xavier fans 100x classier than Creighton fans confirmed.

I think MU ought to send you out of town to more games, buy your tic in the middle of opposing student section, give ya a big bright MU shirt(your main squeeze as well) a few brewskis and make you our ambassador. You would occupy a place right next to freeway and the jumpin(jump around) suit guy.

Does anyone remember that scene from "Waiting" where the "quiet" new waiter goes off on everyone at the employee party and instantly becomes a "made man?"
5th time I've watched MU at X, my daughter is a '17 Xavier nursing grad and we headed to Cincy together. Plenty of Milwaukee kids (MUHS, DSHA & Pius) going to school down there. The Cintas is great place to watch a game and Xavier was a great place for her to go to school. That said, the post game beer tasted great at Dana's with the win in hand!
Good stuff, X, and welcome to ScoopLand, where we all agree on pretty much everything.
My favorite road games were the 2 times I saw us beat Wisconsin at Madison. I also went to a win at ND when I was a sophomore, but I had a little (translation: a lot) too much to drink and don't remember it very well!

I like him better on "Freaks and Geeks".

Loved that show when it was on TV and was so upset when it got cancelled. I bought the DVD box set as soon as it came out, and shared it with my then-teenage kids. They liked it so much they made copies of it for their friends, and even a couple of their high school teachers, and this was before any of the actors became really famous.
Whatever happened to the actor who played Cardellini's little brother?

Going to invite a lot of hate my way, but I never got into mad men.

That's the guy NorthernDancer was talking about in "Waiting". He was on the show "Bones" , and was in the movie "Game Night".
So, icebreaker question for everyone: Which "Freaks and Geeks" character were you most like in high school? I have to admit, for me it was Millie.

I agree with you on this one, chick. I loved this show and was bummed when they cancelled it. Up there with Party Down as a cast that was ridiculously stacked and cancelled too soon (although more due to some of the cast getting better roles like Parks and Rec and Glee).
I still love throwing out lines from the dad like "You know who used to cut class? Jimi Hendrix. You know what happened to him? He died!"

He wasn't just in Game Night, he directed it. That Vacation remake no one liked too. He also has a bunch or writing credits for pretty big movies, like Spideman: Homecoming, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and those Horrible Bosses movies. He's doing ok for himself.
Gottlieb on Jeff Goodman's podcast - Good N Plenty advocating ND to leave ACC for Big East. Argument is that while ACC is a better conference, ND gets washed out by the top end and always will. Also argues that they are not even getting the best academic kids- UVA, Duke, Throws in Northwestern and then adds MU as competing with UND for the kind of kids we get - "the Hauser boys" (and Goodman chimes in with -"they are white" and skilled). Really an awkward conversation.

Aside from the idiotic comment on race, I agree ND would be better off with the BEast if they are going to stay independent in foosball.

A day you'll remember forever. And remember to pay it forward when we've got some visitors at Fiserv. Stupid Freshmen listen to Seniors when they hear 'keep it civil dude'.

I thought Notre Dame would regret the move to the ACC but I thought it would be their football program that would struggle and basketball program would thrive. Turns out I was bassackwards on that one.

Acc is an absolutely horrible fit for ND, in all areas but $$. If i was an ND alum, and most of them live in or around BE cities, i would not be happy.

Not really. The ACC puts ND in prime football recruiting areas -- Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. That helps as their traditional recruiting states - Ohio, Illinois and Michigan -- don't provide them as much as they used to.

You weren't wrong.
ND hoops has had a very good last half decade. Couple of Elite Eights. NCAA appearances outside of that. ND football is relevant on a national level once every five years.

The trends show the opposite. ND basketball went from back to back Elite Eights to a Round of 32 to an NIT to a likely no postseason. ND football went from a 9-4 record to competing in the college football playoff.
5 years to judge a conference realignment ;D

The ACC move by Notre Dame was done because said they wanted a better neighborhood to house their "Olympic Sports" . It is all these non revenue sports where they have lots of alumni that give them big bucks.
ND got exactly what they wanted with the ACC by driving a hard bargain that was to their advantage in football. They locked in 5 medium difficulty games a year and then could rotate their traditional big opponents. Brian Kelly is a proven coach who will keep that program competitive.
Basketball has had it's moments, but I don't think they are going to be consistently able to compete for the type of players necessary to propel them to be at the top of the ACC.
However in all respects ND sucks.

Notre dame has recruited well nationally for 50+ years.
The people that are hurt are the ND alums in the NE. That now have to travel to college towns in the SE part of the country to see their team.

My left hand was always independent in foosball. Great at scoring with the right, though. Does MU's EGames scholarship table include foosball?

Is it home or road? If it's '83 the gray road jersey, I'll trade you my home white 1980 signed Mike Bowers jersey, and I'll throw in the home white slacks complete with the tie-front belt! Forged Certificates of Authenticity included.
