I see in the boxscore [Jamal] got two minutes, but I can't even remember when they were. That's 1, 2, and 2 minutes in the last three games. After averaging 17 last year.
Is the writing on the wall? Is he our Cheatham this year? When would he have to transfer out by to be eligible for 2nd semester 2020?
If so, too bad - I really like his game.

I'm not a fan of these transfer speculation threads.
He actually got some first half run. Wojo gave him an opportunity
2 minutes is not really an opportunity. You can tell his confidence is shot. If anyone is going to transfer out, it very well could be him.

You have to do something within those minutes to earn more. Wojo doesn't have a lot of trust in him right now and I can't say I blame him
Confidence is about how you played in your last game. We have North Dakota next. Hopefully this is not a UTEP and we have a big enough lead that he gets more minutes to get his confidence back. Down 4 against Wisconsin is not the time to "force" a struggling player in the game to "get right."

Does anyone know - maybe that flu has been lingering with him? How did his body language look? (I didn't see him much from telecast).
Would really be great if he could be a contributor this season.

Wojo has his reasons. Truth is we are winning without him.
Oh good. ::)
Cain was really excited after the win. High-fived Sam and had a big smile after the final buzzer.
We'll see what the future holds but Jamal was just as excited as his teammates yesterday.
Edit: It was actually a chest bump, not a high five.

Really good to hear. To me that means he has confidence in himself it just has not yet trickled down into his execution.
I feel the same about Joe C's offense.
I really hope Jamal stays. I still think his upside is as high as anyone on the team.
He gone. Kids want to play and he isn't. Doesn't mean he doesn't like his teammates or coach, so cheering means little. He came into the game with the walk-ons for the UTEP game.
Things changed after thanksgiving. My guess is he went home, talked with family and decided to transfer.

Is it too late to redshirt him?
He should talk to Sacar about his (lack of) playing time after his freshman year and what happened after a red-shirt year off.
It's hard to play 10-11 guys. This is the reality of having a deep and talented roster. I hope Jamal stays and as others have said he appears to remain engaged and there is really no real evidence to suggest he is considering leaving the team, and speculation of such is a little premature.

Maybe, but you don't know any of this to be true unless you are Mr. Cain. Stop with the speculation.

This is a really interesting observation. If he did talk it over with his family, we'll hear in the next 10 days, right?
Wojo has tightened up his lineup the last four games. Last year Cain averaged 18 minutes a game, this year Joey, Joe C. and Bailey are getting those and thats with Elliott injured. When Elliott comes back, Cain might not see the floor at all.
He came in yesterday to sub out Markus for two minutes and that was it. If Elliott was available, would he have even subbed in for Markus?
In last four games he has played two, two, one and nine minutes (blowout over Charleston) and has taken one shot.
Since all of the above are returning, with McEwen taking Joe C. minutes, I don't see anything changing unless he gets some minute or so if Sam gets in foul trouble.
I hope he stays, always good to have players like him in case something happens.
I wonder if Eke will see any playing time.

I doubt it this year. Still having back issues.
Somebody has to be 10th man. This isn't socialism. Play well in practice and on the court, you're problems are solved. I never worry about this stuff.
Oh, and remember a young kid named Jimmy Butler? He took the right approach. He worked hard to get better on the advice of his upperclassmen teammates.

Sorry. I think. I don't know him or anyone else close to the program. Seems fairly clear though, he went from 9-15 minutes a game to last guy off the bench after thanksgiving break.

Jimmy was also sixth man on a really good team. Not sure it's a good comparison.
That's how internet rumors start. Someone completely makes up a scenario and someone else sees it and doesn't read it as completely made up. Each time it's repeated the new reader reads it as more and more reality.

That's just one of those stories athletes tell after they've had a lot of success. I once read an article on David Price where he said that when he was at Vanderbilt, he quit baseball and applied at McDonald's, only to be talked out of it by his coach. Nice yarn, but Price was never going to quit baseball.

Even if he were to be injured during the exam break, he can't get an injury redshirt as MU has played 10 games which puts him over 30% (31 x .30 = 9.3 ).

If he told Wojo something when he got back, his minutes would be at 0 right now. If he didn't say anything, then it's just Wojo's decision, not the result of Jamal making a decision.

not be the result of a decision Jamal and his family made.

Was it a leaping chest bump, or just a chest bump. Jumping off one leg or two? Straight on chest bump, or the rotate your shoulder to their chest bump.
These are all important details in determining if he is transferring or not.
In more seriousness. Two predictions. 1) Cain isn't going anywhere. 2) Elliot plays against either North Dakota or Buffalo.

We could really use Elliott. His bench production is definitely missed.
I'm not expecting a ton from Elliott this season. Coming back from an injury when you're just a roll player usually doesn't work out great. Greg had an important roll last year because he was a gritty defender on a terrible defensive team. He'll be joining a team that is already very solid defensively. Breaking into the rotation will be tough.

So basically the takeaway from this thread is that Jamal is not gone, right?
Jamal is not gone. But apparently he told Wojo he was leaving after Thankgiving and that's why his minutes decreased.
The tough thing for Jamal is that if he has fallen behind Brendan Bailey he might feel like he'll never have a starter's role on this team. They play fairly similar styles/position but BB so far has been ahead of Cain on the depth chart.
On the other hand, his friendship with Greg might help him to stick around and put in the work to fight for his minutes. I think he benefits from GE's intensity when they play together as he doesn't seem to burn quite as hot normally as other guys.
Either way, hope he does what is best for him. If that's with MU, I think he'll be an important contributor. If not, can't fault him for searching for a better opportunity.

No. You're wrong and lying. The criteria for a medical hardship waiver includes a 30% provision, but there is a rounding element to the calculation. In Marquette's case, the calc is what you showed, but the 9.3 is rounded up to 10 allowable games in the first half of the season.
So, the truth is if Jamal had an incapacitating injury in practice or on the streetz before playing in another game and was unable to play for the rest of the year, he WOULD indeed meet the criteria for a medical hardship waiver.n

That's weird. One would usually round to the nearest whole #. In any event, hopefully he stays healthy! :)
PS, what's really wacky is that 10 divided by 31 is 32.3%. Leave it to the NCAA to come up up with something weird, though surprisingly this would actually favor the SA.

This thread is dumb
A little early to be handing out the "Golden Ners Award" for best player on the team but Wojo didn't like so he gowne, isn't it?
Doesn't Wojo have a history of not playing impending transfers. If so, note that Cain played yesterday.
Also, our next game is Dec 18 against North Dakota. The semester will be over then. If he is truly leaving he'll announce and be granted his release before that game so he can find a he landing spot. (cannot "legally" talk to other schools before released)
So, if he is transferring, yesterday was his last game in an MU Uni.

If Wojo knows of a transfer, he won't play at all, and in fact will be off the team immediately. (See Haanif.)
For Jamal's sake I hope he sticks out the year at least. He seems like a great young man and it'd be a shame for him to lose essentially a year of eligibility because of the mid season transfer.

So Wojo playing Cain two minutes yesterday could be taken as a signal from Wojo that he sees no transfer coming.

One minor quibble. A guy can be both supportive of his current teammates and school especially in such a momentous game AND be considering what is best for his own situation long-term, which might mean leaving. I think that Duane Wilson was a great example of that—the raw emotion after the Villanova game he displayed will stick with me for a long time, even though he ended up leaving the program a few months later. He was still cheering for MU and his teammates while he was at TAMU, but decided he needed a different situation for himself.
All to say, I love that Cain is still engaged and cheering for the team, regardless of what he is thinking long term—says a lot about his character, which I think is indicative of the type of guys that Wojo is looking for his program. For that reason I hope he sticks it out—and, being part of a winning/ascending program could certainly help that a lot even if he isn't getting premier minutes.

The issue with threads like this based on total speculation about a young man's future is it inevitably turns from rampant speculation to an in depth discussion about an actually non-existent transfer as if it is to happen.
That's a disservice to the student-athlete and the program. And if I can be most sanctimonious, it's a disservice to your own intellectual ability.
