Shake Shack
Does anyone like Shake Shack? Going solely by my 12yr old review of "it's like a bad, but expensive, 5 Guys" and a resounding "meh" from him on the shake I assume it's trash.
On the northeast corner of Water and Buffalo in the Third Ward.

I haven't had it in Wisconsin, but the Shake Shacks in New York (where it's originally from) are fantastic. Sometimes where makes a difference, the Culver's down here in Texas are crap compared to the ones back home. Shake shack is probably in my top 5 fast food joints.

Have only had it out in NYC. I assume in Milwaukee it is the same. The shakes are awful. The "cheese fries" are some fries with a piece of American cheese set over the top of them. The burgers are decent, but insanely overpriced. I'd much, much rather spend less money for an infinitely better (and bigger) burger at Oscar's Pub (which is just as fast service).
Just ate at the New Haven Shake Shack this past Saturday before a concert.

Disagree on the shakes and cheese fries. The shakes aren't earth shattering good but for a fast food shake are solid. Black and white is my favorite one. The cheese isn't American cheese its a nacho cheese and one of the better ones I have found at a fast food joint.

I must be thinking of a different fast food's cheese fries. Regarding the shake, the first time I went I got just a standard chocolate shake and was so disappointed I decided I would never get another shake at Shake Shack again. I got the lemonade next time and that was bad too.
Shake Shack is great, get the hell out with that Five Guys garbage. Soggy burger, greasy freaking mess. Totally disgusting.

Only had it once, but agree with your sentiments.
I'm in Italy, your talk is making me sick.
And Shake Shack sells beer and wine also which is a plus in a fast food restaurant. Shackmeister Ale
This seems like an appropriate place to make this comment: McDonalds ruined their shakes when they started to make them fancy with whipped cream. Give me the old fashioned, completely artificial old school shake.
I know this isn't really fast food, but the Steak & Shake shakes are really good.

I ate at one Shake Shack - in Vegas. It was nothing special. Burger was OK, shake was mediocre.
Five Guys ... terrible. Burgers are hockey pucks, fries are soggy.
I'd rather have a good greasy McD's quarter pounder than either, and better fries too.
Every few months, I'll have a really good burger out at a good (non-fast-food) restaurant, but I grill fantastic burgers at home so I rarely get one out. Same with steaks; why should I spend $50+ for a steak dinner when I can buy a great cut and grill it myself exactly how I want it for a fraction of that price?
Shake Shack on Michigan Ave in Chicago is phenomenal. The burgers literally melt in your mouth. Great fries and shakes to boot. Comp to 5 Guys? Get real.

Agree on burgers, though if they have some wacky toppings I will try them if they sound good. I can usually make a better burger at home.
I used to feel the same about steaks but there's a few places down here that have changed my mind. You may have superior skill than I do, but I have accepted that some of the steakhouses here can get steaks to a quality that I could never achieve.

Well, I am a dad. And back in the groovy '60s, I was "the most."
I like their frozen custard. I don't eat a lot of fast (casual) food burgers these days but the burgers are pretty good. I like that they use quality, fresh, ingredients.

You may get made fun of for this remark (on now me too ;D )but my wife is a foodie and friends with food critics. This is exactly what food critics will tell you. They may review streak places but it is just pandering. They would prefer actual cooking when they go to restaurants.
There are a number of things we normally don't bother to order at restaurants because of the disappointment vs. making it at home: steaks, burgers and baby backs top the list.
I like to order stuff out that I don't get at home. My wife doesn't like seafood and we never have it at home, so I like to get that. Cajun food. Middle Eastern food. Greek food. Asian food. Stuff like that.
My favorite "fast casual" or sports bar foods are fish tacos and wings. Bad wings are always disappointing, but we have a few good wing places here and I love 'em!

Ah, we remember back in the 60's when we had real steak restaurants, especially in Milwaukee and Chicago.
To answer your question; assuming you can get a good cut, I think you mean good animal, good feed, and aged, and at a good price we stil have a few issues.
1. You need a HOT, HOT grill to sear the steak.
2. You need to cook it from top and bottom, called broiling.
3. Dry aged would help, but that requires Gallagers in Vegas or NYC.
Not to brag, but I live in NJ a few miles from the president and shop at a top of the line butcher and he can't get me dry aged beef. Not to mention that I can't afford dinning at New York steak houses now that I'm retired and not on a corporate expense account.
Getting back to the grill, my Weber is good, but a far cry from the equipment at a real steak house.
And then we have the guys who are aficionados of smokers, ha. I know, that's another thread that never dies.
Dry aged beef is easily available @ butcher stores in Milwaukee.

Or are you talking about the "typical" local butcher shop "aged" beef?

Not exactly, just installed a Kohler 24kW stand-by LPG generator with liquid cooling. Love Milwaukee and Wisconsin, wife graduated from Iowa. Wisconsin is far from the frontier. The frontier is in outer Mongolia, and Africa. Yesterday I ran into 17 tourists from Laos and we talked about working elephants in the jungle of Laos. Now thats the frontier.
Wish it was Kopp's. That's something I can get behind.

I assume you meant thamnidium not fistulina hepataica. As it occurs naturally one doesn't need to visit a Gallagher's in Vegas or NYC.

In this case, since I can't eat beef, I'm simply reporting what's been said. From a visual perspective there is very little difference between what i've seen at SS and 5Guys (and Culver's, and Freddy's, and etc.). This seems to be a Ruth Chris situation where the quality of the experience differs wildly by location....though i have not eaten at a Ruth Chris in 10 years.

Thank you for the input, dry aging of meat is not my expertise. You sent me to Wikipedia and as usual I am now better informed.
I get all of my meat at a butcher--House of Homemade Sausage in Germantown. Owners try to keep prices just slightly higher than Pick n Save. Owners say they need to stay close to grocery store prices to stay competitive. I now seldom order steaks at restaurants. I can grill up a 1-3/4 to 2 inch Porterhouse that is as good as any steak in Milwaukee. It is a family owned shop, great people. I have tried many butcher shops from West Allis to Saukville. This shop is the best I have found. Worth the ride.

BTW, those folks grow their own cattle, they would not be caught dead with our stuff. They have private cooks, guards, pilots, and house doctors. Not to mention teachers, and old school gardeners, drivers, and equesterian helpers. One half doesn't know how the other 1% live.

OR PQM (Publican Quality Meats). A great way to cook a steak perfect at home is sous vide at 129 for about an hour then hit on either a cast iron pan which under your broiler or your grill as hot as you can get it to finish.
But for burgers, why are people grilling them? Double patty (3.5-4oz each) griddled and smashed is the only way to go for a great burger. Need that griddle (or pan - I use my side burner on my grill to get a pan over 600) to cook them for 30 seconds in a ball form then smash them down. 2 min total each side. Slice of american cheese on each patty. Double stacked on a potato roll with a little mayo, little mustard and pickles.
Big thick burgers are just meatloaf to me.

You'd love my grilled burgers, Chili. I don't make 'em too thick, and I sure as heck don't use American cheese.

This is offensive. Many cheeses melt great!
At the right temperature all cheeses melt, even Parmigiano Reggiano.
You can get your shake at 144 E Juneau.
In NYC for the games (and the inlaws). Just had some cheese fries and a Christmas cookie shake from Shake Shack. Sooooooooo good. Most of their shakes are just good for a fast food joint but the Christmas Cookie shake is on point.
Also, passed the Johnnies in the hotel. They are short this season. I knew that already but they seemed even smaller in person. They are going to be matchup nightmare on offense but so vulnerable in the paint and on the boards.

I did. The shake was good, the rest was questionable. Service was poor. The cashier didn't greet us when we came in & when they paged me for my order it wasn't ready, I had to wait 5 minutes at the counter for fries. Why page me if it's not ready? The tables were mostly dirty and no one was cleaning them off.
The free shake aspect is fun, but I doubt I'll take advantage again. Very impressed by the restaurant.
