What's with the F U Nova chant?
Are we 10? I mean we're chanting F U to Nova? Arguably one of the classiest teams in the nation. They ain't Cincinnati.
I don't care if kids pass out, puke or fall from the 400s. Drink as much as you want, be loud, be nuts. But save that crap for teams that deserve it.
You're not White Sox fans. At least I hope you're not.
How dumb. Of you, not the students.
Because Philly fans are such a classy bunch...
I'm a fan of the Nova program as well but let kids be kids.
I'm happy they showed, but "F--- you ______" or "F--- the _______" is so lame. Get creative.
They probably tried starting it a dozen times, too. Embarrassing.

Couldn't agree more. Zero class. Zero creativity. Against a team and coach that show more class than any other we face. Too bad, as otherwise the students and entire crowd were fantastic.

There's a reason why the admins shut down the Hey Song at the last timeout, and it's a shame they cannot do anything about the F you chants. I expect better from my alma mater, especially because of the religious background of the school.
Then again, when the kids behind me yelled "unnatural carnal knowledge Stevenson" every time Brunson touched the ball, I gave them a hearty thumbs up.
I'm glad that someone else brought it up, so I didn't have to be "that guy". The FU chant was so lame and embarrassing. Is that attributable to having students who normally don't attend games, because that's doesn't generally happen. But agreed, total lack of creativity\class by the student section.
Their stupid F word chant, just makes Marquette look bad.
'F the referees' would be far more appropriate.
No issues with that chant anytime Pat Driscoll comes to town.

I'd like to think yes.
But to be honest, if I had been a normal student, I would probably have joined in when I was 18-19 years old. Since I was in the band, we had it emphasized strongly that we represented the school and we were not allowed to participate in any of the F you chants or turning our backs during starting lineups.

There were no F U chants, that's for sure. Really poor reflection on the student body.
Scoop rags on the students for how often they show up. Rags on them for what they chant.
Happens a lot of places.
Yes, it happens a lot of places...take the student section at Rodent games. But take a road trip to the other nine schools in the big east, and let me know how often you hear it. I'll be surprised if you hear it once.

I realize the in person experience is much different with kids than on TV but on TV me and my kids didn't hear an FU chant.
First words from Jay Wright after the game was what a great environment for college basketball...
So I go to marquette games. We chant unnatural carnal knowledge you. I go to Wisconsin games they chant unnatural carnal knowledge you. I go to Creighton games they can't unnatural carnal knowledge you. I go to butler games they chant unnatural carnal knowledge you.

And I'm not a hater. I appreciate a school of our size filling up 3,000-4,000 seats with students. I just feel F U Nova is so unimaginative and frankly undeserved.
If you're gonna rip the opponent at least put some thought into it.
Agree w/The Lens. Embarrassing.
I only heard it once for maybe 4 cycles, I was hopeful the classier students ended it.
Jay didn't seem to mind.
If it was so bad comparatively, would he have tweeted this?
"One of the best environmentss in the @BIGEASTMBB ! @MarquetteMBB has a great team and great fans - another tough Big East battle !!"
Did the students dump beer on Jay? No? How about pennies? Did they throw pennies at opposing foul shooters? Pikers. Kids chant dumb things. 3 decades ago, when we could generate enough energy to rise above the bad basketball that was 84-88, we gravitated toward the organic fertilizer chant.
Yes, as a middle aged parent of an impressionable 11 year old, I would rather not hear that on TV. I use it as a teaching moment. But it is rank hypocrisy to condemn what they are doing when you chanted very bad things once upon a time.

NO WE DON'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!Some of us think Cardinal fans are the best fans in baseball. Smart, refined and honor the character of our opponents (unless they are the Cubs, in which case we rather get a little smug!). We understand the nuances of the game, respect it and cheer pleasantly for America's best baseball team.
Cardinal fans expect nothing other than to win.

I encourage the students to be more clever than course.

The chant was embarassing, and it was done multiple times. When it starts the band should start chanting something else. And no, we didn't use that as a chant back in my student days.

For sure. "Our students were trashy, classless and embarrassing!" Proceeds to make a trashy, classless and embarrassing comment.
In the email from the University to students today was this nugget:
"We are looking forward to hosting another big crowd tonight at the game against Butler and can't wait for the Blue & Gold faithful to display its support in a manner that will make all individuals associated with the university proud during Saturday's game."
That's code for "please don't do the f you chant again"
Definitely not a fan of it, but do remember being in college and doing stupid things. I was sitting with my seven year old nephew that thought it was big time funny, which made me laugh.
It's not classy and I never did the F-word chant when I was a student. I get that it happens all over the place.
Having said that, I was at the game and the student section overall was fantastic. Very impressed with the energy level.

A big F you to the student section.
In the early 90s we had a few buses of us knuckleheads for the MU-ND game at the Joyce Center.
Don't remember much from that trip, but our section's chants of "Digger beats his meat!" were audible from the other side of the arena.

My college had hockey as our most popular sport. (for a Florida school and a club team it was weird).
Place was packed every game in a super small rink. 1 dollar beers and a packed house made for a fun environment.
Our chants of the ref f---s his mom and calling every opposing goalie a goat f----ker for literally the entire game makes the mu crowd look for tame. Oh btdubs this was the most ''prestigious'' aerospace engineering school in the us. Didn't make us look any worse. Just kids having a good time.

I've been to hundreds of White Sox games and can't ever recall hearing that chant there, certainly not chronically. Heard it plenty at MU games. Can't get past the opening kickoff at a Bear game without hearing it. I'm sure it happens at Sox games, but I honestly can't remember it.

Too bad it's too late to put a poll in this thread. There seem to be three positions.
1. Hey, it's cool, they're college kids for christsakes.
2. It's a fine chant for some schools, but 'Nova is a classy program, and deserves better.
3. It's never appropriate, it makes Marquette appear classless.

I would vote for #1 here. The chant isn't that big of a deal. It's just words. But I do think I have some insight as to when this chant started against Nova. If I recall correctly, the first time I heard (and participated, no shame in that) the chant for Nova games was 2014, Buzz's last game against Nova. I think students chose Nova to replace ND for these chants because Nova and MU played relatively close in years prior.
Also, that 2014 game was the game where we wore the all pink jerseys and Arcidiacono hit a bunch of free throws in OT to seal the deal.

That has been going on for at least a decade, cheers like that are part of what makes college atmosphere so fun and rowdy. Now that being said I wish that we'd realize who were playing because in two instances we've had former players comes back as coaches for opposing teams and students still shouted "sucks".
