8. No shame in this game. Nova is #3 in the country. (though I am sure Lenny will say they are overrated) MU showed up, worked their asses off, the freshmen competed at a high level and gave Nova a hell of a game despite not getting anything from Rowsey. The team played without fear in the second half. I cannot ask for more.
9. I am optimistic for the future.

Really encouraged how we played in the second half. The defense felt like much less of a revolving door with only one player under 6 feet.
That was the hardest game on our schedule. We hung with them with lineups of two freshmen and three sophomores. It was a two possession game with 20 seconds left. I declare a moral victory.
Greg Elliott looked like a Big East guard if I ever saw one.
Also, good officiating crew. It was refreshing to see a game called well.
As for #3, that was an ego injury all the way. We need Rowsey to show up every night. That will be the difference between an NCAA Tournament or not.
Other than that, I'm encouraged. We competed hard. I'm convinced Nova is the best team in the country.

He has to guard somebody. When isn't it a mismatch when Rowsey guards someone? Brunson, Bridges, DiVincenso, Cartwright. Do the math. And that is one of, but not the only, reason for MU's defensive deficiencies.

Great D from the FROSH. Howard is the real deal scoring at will against a superior defense. 2nd half was the best played D this year. The potential is clearly there.

Markus Howard is very close to becoming must see TV for me. IMO, we were never in the game and 'Nova went through the motions, but I watched every second to see what Howard would do.
Howard is a joy to watch and scoring at historic clip. He reminds me of Chris Jackson, because his ability to score in bunches like few have done. In addition, he made route tonight ultimately look respectable.

That's all I ask against the #3 team on their floor, that we look like we belong in the same league and tonight at least in the second half we looked like we did. Liked the intensity of the press at the end but why couldn't we bring (that intensity) when we slapped it on earlier in the half.
Freshmen looked great - when/if Theo finds his range on that jump hook he'll be the center we need (and he had it a few games ago for one or two games!)
1-3-1 is a mess. I like the idea of trying to change it up, but not if we execute at a JV level.
Rowsey. Ugh. I'm not sure he's not going to lose us more games than he wins heading out. He was totally playing "me ball" tonight. One of his drives early in the first half and Markus was standing wide open in the corner waving at him. Instead he forced it up against 3 trees. If those two could play off one another (and get Sam the ball a bit more) we would be dancing.
I'm gonna need to see a lot of improvement before I stop cringing every time Harry takes a 3. Sacar and Elliot were both excellent tonight though. Hopefully we can bounce back and get a win at home on Tuesday.

Good effort. Greg, Sacar and Markus showed up. Still think Sam needs to be more aggressive, but was rock solid as usual. We hung in there. Down 7 with 6 or so left and Sam has a wide open 3 hit front rim. Hit that and things would have gotten real interesting.

I would think at least 20, but there is a lot of depth there. He's just another guy that is hard to take off the court. Even if he isn't scoring a lot, he does everything right.

Agreed, I love Howard, but from a professional level, he's an undersized 1 who isn't good defensively. He'll make plenty of coin professionally overseas in a few years, maybe get an NBA look, but not after his sophomore year, no way.
There were points in the first half where we looked outclassed. Happy they pulled it together and made it a game. Markus is the bomb.

Moved up quite a nice bit on Kenpom and in RPI today thanks to a decent showing and some of the former opponents having good games. This team has a much better chance at dancing when compared to where we were at this time last year. Let's see if they can beat a very good Seton Hall team next.

Actually disagree with "needing" Rowsey showing up every night in order to make the tournament. We actually saw tonight that if he played zero minutes we are pretty close to beating Villanova on the road.
I'm pro-Rowsey, rare off night for him and can't hang the loss on him. However, I think we are at our best overall when one of Markus/Rowsey is on the floor, not both at the same time. Therefore, so long as Markus has a decent game by his standards and doesn't get into foul trouble, IMO, we're ok. We saw that proven tonight... Nearly beating Nova on the road without him.

Lenny, as I said when you made your original statement, if you had said "marginal top 15", I would have still disagreed a little, but I wouldn't have argued the point. You said marginal top 25. That is worth arguing. Overrated at 5? OK. I can accept that. I think they are, and will continue to be as the season progresses barring injuries, a top 15 team.

Rowsey gives us no help last night and we hang tough with Nova led by an experienced Brunson on their court. Next year we don't have the Brunson issue, players develop, and we bring in at least two players that should add to the team. Never like to lose, and I understand the argument against the "next year" narrative...but I'm hopeful.
I will also say, with the occasional exception of Rowsey, I really enjoy watching these kids grow and play. They seem to be tremendous representatives of MU. Sacar has sacrificed... and played well last night. Heldt seems like such a great teammate and hard worker. Sam could demand more shots or force things, but he remains patient. Markus represents at many levels and has bounced back nicely from a tough few games. Jamal and Greg just play...Never see them looking anything but 100% engaged. Theo seems to enjoy being a "protector." Just a really great group of kids. I'm still relatively young...but I enjoy this vs a Kentucky situation. Nothing against Ellenson...but that situation just wasn't engaging to me. I really enjoy watching Nova, as well as most of the BEAST teams, Wojo will win at an acceptable level with a great group of guys.

Yeah I didn't notice that the hedging that everyone complains about, wasn't happening. But the switching wasn't working. And when Nova just spread the floor and went one on one? That didn't work either.
The good news is that Elliott's offensive game has grown. If we don't land a graduate transfer, I feel comfortable with a Howard / Elliott backcourt next year.
Tower, my reaction was the same as yours: this team can and will survive Rowsey next year. Great heart, if not great defense.
We're sticking around this year, and we're gonna have a chance to beat them again at home.

The good news is that Elliott's offensive game has grown. If we don't land a graduate transfer, I feel comfortable with a Howard / Elliott backcourt next year.
It has, hasn't it? And here's the thing. IF he starts next year he doesn't need to be a big time scorer. The points that Rowsey scores can be spread among other players already on the team plus Joey. Plus some long arms and disruptive D at the point of attack decrease our need to put up 90. So in theory, our last scholly could be a Frosh guard. But we do need one more guard, for sure.

Still very much getting caught up to game speed. Skills are there, but his mind is moving faster than his body can react. Can see that on a couple of his drives and post ups when he's been whistled for a travel.
People forget that he didn't play a ton at SMU and then sat for a year. It takes more than 5 games to get back in the flow.

You're right, I think it took AR 6 games to start to settle down when he opened.

But to the team's credit, I bet there were a couple of times during the game where he was sweating at least a little bit. I don't believe that at any point during the game, we were in worse shape than we were at the same point in the last Villanova game.
I'll be excited to see what Elliott can do with both hands healthy. I think his ball handling will improve with the game slowing down and healthy left thumb.

I hope that's the case, as I'm not sold on him handling the ball well. Hold my breath whenever he's dealing.
That said, GE is certain to grow into a more complete player as the toolset is there.
Looking forward to his growth and the flashes of talent we see with JCain each game.
