Survived one of the worst officiated games I can remember. Good win no matter who they didn't have playing.
NYC twitter trends:
1. Donald JR
2. Fred Bass (Owner of the Strand bookstore who just passed)
3. Markus Howard
1. Markus Howard. So much for the slump. Glad he's back. Did it all tonight - 3's, floaters, and layups. Money.
2. Greg was outstanding on defense. Got beat on a nice backdoor once by Cartwright in the second half, but was otherwise fantastic. Active hands all night and forced the big turnover at the end of regulation.
3. Sam. Cold blooded shot
4. PnR looked good tonight. Theo had at least 3 open looks at the rim on nice feeds from Markus, but pretty sure he only finished one and botched the other two.
5. High foul counts in the first 10 minutes have become a consistent problem. Need to fix this. Also need to start getting some calls. Refs have been terrible.
6. Had to hide Markus on Jackson and it kind of worked. Big guards are going to give us fits this year. Helps when we're firing on all cylinders on offense.

One more - thank god we have Froling. It'd be great if he was another Luke Fischer (ducks Sand-Knit throwing shoe (who throws a shoe, honestly?)), but tonight, it was good enough that we had someone to absorb 5 more fouls.
What were the chances we have 3 players foul out and none were Theo John!?!
Glad to see Sam nail that 3 at the end after passing up open looks the entire game. Frankly, the moment looked too big for him. Then he gathers his nerve and hits the big shot! Good for you, Sam!

The drive near the end of regulation with 27.5 sec left? Attached a screencap from the under basket replay. Looks like a clonk on the head. At a minimum made some contact with his body.
That does look like he got hit in the head.
The first time I saw it, I didn't see a foul. But from the under-the-basket replay, it did look like he got hit in the head. Kind of a dumb decision for PC to even make it close enough to call.

I think both him and Froling are exhibiting symptoms of the game being "too fast" for them right now. I think they absolutely have the talent to compete in the Big East but they look like they are thinking too much still. Theo slammed a lay up off the back board and it missed the hoop by a foot because he seemingly couldn't believe he was so wide open and rushed it. Froling looks like he doesn't yet trust his instincts on offense and the ball kind of bogs down. I think both will be fine at seasons end.
Did Hoard's current slump start when he banged his head and got 19(?) stitches?
Hauser three reminded me of a play earlier in the season after a timeout. I think it was a called play be Wojo. The other team gets sucked into guarding Rowsey and Howard and Hauser sets up to take the three.

I think you're right. Watch the replay, and they're not doing typical man switches on Howard - they're hawking him all the way to midcourt. They drew a line in the sand (after 52 points) that they weren't going to let Howard beat them.

With Marquette, you can never assume the game is over until the team with the ball is up by three or more scores and they have turned the shot clock off. That goes either way.

You are 100% wrong on that not being a charge. That exact type of play is a point of emphasis for refs this year, and the instructions for officials is that it is to always be called a charge. The example plays used to instruct the refs on the point of emphasis is identical to that play by Elliot.

Well I disagree with you completely. He was not set. He moved under the guy.
I am not talking about the one where he was called for a foul later in the game. That was disputable. The first one was not.
Sam had a good defensive game. And shutting down Lindsey shows how athletic he really is. He needs to be significantly more aggressive offensively to help this team. His game winning splash was the same situation he had mere minutes earlier when he passed up the wide open shot and threw the cross court pass that was stolen for the fast break going the otherway. Sam needs to launch , hes every bit the shooter that markus n andrew are.

The charge you refer to was just an awful call. No idea how they called that a charge on Cartwright.
There were also ridiculous blocking calls on Sacar (his 5th) and Heldt, and I didn't think it should have been a block on Cartwright on Elliot's three point play later on in the game. Just some baffling calls both ways.

You can disagree, and if this was last season you would be right, that would of been called a blocking foul.
But the NCAA made it a point of emphasis this year that, that exact type of play should be called a player control foul or a no call. So based on this years point of emphasis, and rule specification, the refs made the right call. They are instructed to call that a charge.
I'm not sure I agree with the change and point of emphasis, but that is how they are supposed to call that. It is meant to stop players (like Cartwright in this case) from seeking contact by driving out of control towards defenders. The defender does not have to be set, can be moving, just has to be moving in a legal guarding position.
Even with that play, it is one of only about 3 plays that I thought MU got the benefit of the doubt on.

The one I'm referring to is the drive by Cartwright down the freethrow lane, identical to the drive at 3:00, where Cartwright drives his shoulder into a sliding Elliott, just like the defender in the video.
The rule emphasis is to call a charge or no call, on offense initiated contact when driving down the lane at the freethrow line extended. Especially when they lower the shoulder (like Cartwright).
You can say it was questionable, but when it is a point of emphasis, the officials are supposed to err on the side of being consistent with the point of emphasis. Based on the rule emphasis, definitely not a bad call, more a 50:50 type call.
Most here are not criticizing the 50:50 calls going against MU, it is the blatantly bad calls going against MU.
As fun as that win was, we did collapse in the second half and they played without their best player. If I am Wojo I drill it hard into their heads how fortunate we were. At times too much standing around to watch Markus do his thing.

As I posted in the other thread, Cartwright is their most important player. He runs the team and there is a big drop off between him and Cartwright, and less of a drop off between Bullock and Jackson.
